People say the Genesis's sound chip is far weaker than the SNES's but now I can see that they are just entirely different beasts. It's stunning what you can do with FM synthesis when you're clever enough.
As a kid I've played games like Sonic 1-2-3, Sunset riders, Rocket knight adventures, Dragon's fury, Earthworm Jim 1-2...... I already knew that it was a beast. Never heard Nintendo fanboys complaining about the Genesis' sound because they probably never played it. Now I have both systems with plenty of games. I can die peacefully!

@@thesupervideogamenerdmore3171 It uses an SPC700 chip from SONY. It's about as good as you could get on a home console in 1990. I think the reason why DefleMask doesn't support the SPC700 is because you'd essentially need to make an entirely new instrument mode complete with defined tuning, flagging(echo, noise), and DSP(volume settings). That and you'd need a meter that represents the state of the 64 kilobyte bus. Support for the SPC700 is certainly possible if one was crazy enough to try and mod that into DefleMask, it's clear Delek wouldn't be interested in that.
WHAT THE ACTUAL HECK This sounds soooo similar to the SNES version! I mean I know that you can make the instruments of a soundchip sound hyper accurate to another soundchip, but I always get so impressed. It's also cool to hear this with a song I'm extremely familiar with.
The issue is that the SNES sound chip is a sampler, while the Genesis is a digital synthesizer. Ultimately, there is nothing the Genesis sound chip can do that the SNES chip can't as it could just sample the output from the Genesis - the problem lying in the fact that said samples would be absurdly huge lest they be reduced in quality, thus the SNES sound chip generally sounds muffled by comparison. The Genesis meanwhile technically has 2 sound chips in parallel, which gives it a total of 10 available channels as opposed to the SNES's 8, which when combined with the higher fidelity output, makes it "punchier" than the SNES.
This is amazingly close! This and your VRC7 cover of sonic 3 blue spheres were really a huge surprise to hear! I'm particularly impressed by the VRC7 one because I know just how cripplingly limited that chip is ;)
Well I suppose it also depends on the sound, some are simple and only a few minutes but some are confusing and difficult to get under a FM configuration

The original arranger of the super famicom track was definitely not any aware of stuff such as hard pass gaussian bypass, brr compression or knew how to optimize samples extensively, which is why it sounded like ass in terms of output While with this, it may sound higher quality but the steel drums sound off, it's possible that this track's patches might not fit within 8kb ARAM anyway, specially with that orchestra hit and snare samples I'd say each chip has their own strenghts, if I'm being very honest The sfc has higher sound range Md has higher quality output
For some reason I imagine the best SNES rendition of Green Hill Zone sounding less faithful than this ... idk what that says about anything, cause I still have a bias towards SNES's sound capabilities. Either way, good job as usual.
Actually, a SNES rendition of a Genesis song can sound 100% identical to the source material; since the SNES uses sound samples instead of programmed instruments, you could record a sample of a Genesis song’s instrument and use it in a SNES music tool. The Super Famicom is an 8 channel sampler, it can play the exact same sounds a Mega Drive can play.
The reason a lot of genesis songs are bad is because of the lack of good programs to make the music
