    In this video, I'm showing you an obscure Super Mario style game for the 80's Atari ST home computer. This game has wonderful graphics and music, and plays very smoothly. It was released in 1995 (at the end of the Atari ST era) so it was never as big as it could have been. Today I'm showing you how it's played, and giving you my thoughts about it.

    This game is really impressive to me because it scrolls really smooth and updates at 50Hz on an ST which lacks hardware scrolling. So I think it's technically very impressive!

    • @espfusion
      @espfusion 5 років тому +1

      I was thinking that too. Not every day you see a platformer scrolling at 50Hz on an ST. This is a really late release (1995) so it's least possible that it's using hardscroll tricks but I guess a pure software renderer could probably handle it since they were pretty conservative with using a lot of empty background space.
      Probably also helps that it uses a lot of 4 color tiles, so it can just write some bitplanes while setting the others to zero.

    • @beingsshepherd

      Doesn't look like 50Hz in this video.

      I would always be blown away when I'd run into an ST game that ran smoothly, especially side scrollers. It really had little to no hardware to assist games.

      Redigit (creator of Terraria) made SMBX, one of the best Mario fangames until it was taken down by Nintendo. It still lives on through the hard work by fans and it's been updated to 2.0. It's so customizable you could make a new game out of it.
      Notch made Super Infinite Mario Bros, a flash game that had procedurally generated levels. Every level is different and is random. It's great, too.

      There are actually a good bunch of non-nintendo console mario games. The list I found says 12 but they counted weird stuff like watch games. Most of them are edutainment games, but there are also odd-balls like Mario's Fundementals/Game Gallery which can't really be considered an educational game in my opinion since it is only games. There is also the unreleased mario game "Super Mario's Wacky Worlds" for the CD-i, which they didn't count. That one is probably the most interesting, planning to be a direct sequel to Super Mario World. There is actually a leaked proto if you go looking for it.

    Randomnize, mm you probably mean that enemys and the level order are random isn’t it? If so that would be really interesting ,making the game more challanging also supermarioland uses tile sets wich are strained together in certain patterns in a certain order wich will also be repeated to create entire levels,because each level contains atleast 2 identical repeating parts in it,wich is normal ,also that this version contains 108 pseudo levels ,meaning that all it does is repeating those 12 levels over & over again while cranking up the difficuilty, you can loop it as much as you want but you can go on end till never, even if the game counts each repeated level as an extra level it’s should be considered as falsch as they are just repeated levels with cranked up difficuilty!!!.
