BMW E30 318is engine rebuild

- Since July 2011 owner of this E30 318is, built in september 1989 and painted in the color 'Sterling Silber'.
I bought the car with 222.228 km's on it and did the rebuilt (with help from a friend) on 252.772 km's without any known engine problems except some worn camshaft sprockets.
The plan was to keep the original engine block and pistons but due some piston wear in the piston walls, the block is completely overhauled by a revision shop; bored and fitted with +0,25mm oversized pistons. So it became a total engine rebuilt.
The cilinder head is also brand new with new cams, valves, springs..
The entire rebuilt took us approximately 2 months and was a really pleasant job to do, even for our first rebuilt!

I have an 89 318is brilliant rot with 59,000 Kilometers, German car, trying to import to Switzerland, the extensive work put in to bring your bay back to new is insane, its a credit to you!

Finding parts and rebuilding the engine on my 1981 BMW M1 was a bit tricky, especially lifting it out because it's such a tight fit

looks like it's just rolled out of factory!! I'm hoping to rebuild my m42 soon in preparation for an eaton m45 supercharger
@ekim andersom how can adding supercharger mean ruining it?
@@ahrred3127 simple, block cant handle it, m42s are strong but not made for superchargers

You know, i got my e30 318is from a guy, and he called me after one year, asking me if i could sell it back to him... This is a classic car that you should keep, whatever it takes. Get it back if you can!

Hello. This was perfect rebuilt. May I ask a question? Is it legal to change the engine (swap) in Belgium? Because I have an E30 1988 1.6 but it has carb engine. So, I wanted to change it but my country's rules don't allow it. I just wanted to know this.

The description said the engine is bored? What is the displacement now? 1.9?
+0.25mm oversize pistons.
Stock = 1.796cc
Mine = 1.806cc
+0.6% so negligible..

It really depends on what you want to replace exactly and how much you can do yourself..

The head is a new one, the bolds are electrolytic galvanised and the engine block is repainted.
Dear, can you please tell me in which garage the cleaning process has been done? I know Arsa (1440 Wauthier Braine) but it seems to be somewhere else. Thanks in advance. ++

Awel waar alle motor onderdelen in een soort water hooge stroom reiniger tafel gewassen zijn daar. 2.28 in de video :-).

Thx man. als je wilt ooit alles reviseren (dikker pistons of zo in zetten dan mag je bij Arsa gaan te wauthier braine) en voor de camshaft daarvoor mag je bij recam gaan.

The cilinder head is bought second hand, all new OEM parts (camshaft, gears, valves..)
why not put a 2.5 l6 in if you're gonna go to all that trouble?
Why put a M20B25 in an original E30 318is, is the question!
because the 1.8 is slow and not even economical
If you want a fast car, you don't buy a standard E30.
I searched 9 months for my IS and had to had one because I am charmed by the model.
6 In line's are for the 5- and 7-series imo, E30 M3 was an 4cil. as well though (.. the never ending discussion..).
And in the days the 318is was my daily car, I had an average consumption of less then 8L/100km so it is quite economical for a petrol engine from 1989. The E30 with the most modern engine and maybe even the lowest consumption of all E30's!
Speed is just one factor in performance. The M42 is lighter, which translates to a more even weight distribution, which in turn increases handling. If I'm not mistaken, it's the most technologically advanced engine that was put into the E30 chassis.

Hey, ik rij zelf ook met een 318is en ben aan het overwegen om een rebuild van een motor te doen? Als je het niet erg vindt, zou je mij wat info kunnen geven over kostprijs, waar je het werk hebt laten uitvoeren, etc? Zou me heel erg helpen want er is bitter weinig te vinden op fora over het herbouwen van deze motor :-)
Quasi alles is terug te vinden op het net, zeker in de USA.
Meeste werk heb ik zelf gedaan, motorbklok laten heropbouwen en wat andere kleinere klusjes heb ik her en der laten uitvoeren (injectoren reinigen, straalwerk, elektrolytisch verzinken van de kleindelen..)
Kostprijs hangt er net vanaf wat je allemaal wilt doen.
Hebt u deze nog altijd in bezit?
