Best video I’ve seen comparing Model 3 to Model Y.
Thanks
One key difference in the MY rear seat is the space for your feet under the front seat. Because the front seats in the Y are basically just M3 seats on a riser, a "cubby hole" is created where rear passengers can put their feet. This would be really useful if the driver is tall and their seat is pretty far back.
Agreed. It does feel much roomier with that extra space there. My feet are able to fit under the model 3 seats when flat, but in the Y I can move them freely
Our main concern was leg room. This definitely helps steer my decision to the model 3,
This is exactly the kind of information I was looking for. Thanks a lot
great video. didn't realize the similarities of both vehicles
You did only leg room but no the actual rear seat length from from to back. Model-3 is 19 inches and Model-Y is 17 inches. Model-Y rear seat is very uncomfortable for adults with 5 ft 8 inches and above.
The newly refreshed Model 3 seat depth in the rear is now the same as the Model Y: 17 inches.
Great comparison. Clear and just the information that I was looking for, an dmore
Thanks
Thanks for actually showing (and even measuring) the width of the rear seats! I've just looked through a load of "rear seat comparison" videos trying to find something that showed that part, but no one else did. I am surprised that they are the same width (the exterior of the car is meant to be about 2 inches wider isn't it?) and even more surprised that they've actually made the two main rear seats narrower than in the Model 3 by making the middle one wider without increasing the overall width to allow for it - I really wasn't expecting that!
Do you have any idea whether the interior space between the two rear doors (i.e. just above the seats, where people's hips/upper legs would be, and maybe further up where their outer arms would be) is also the same on both models, or maybe it at least has the extra two inches of space there? (a measurement of that on the Model Y would be great!)
Thanks for watching, glad it helped. I actually just remeasured that recently as someone else asked and unfortunately, the width to the doors is nearly identical as well. I think the extra width of the vehicle is lower and since these seats are higher off floor it ends up in the same range. I have not had a chance to measure a 7 seater, but the fact that the back bench slides forward and back would probably play with that width a little depending on the position.
I agree with you though, I was surprised that it was not wider in the back. Also, I think because it is designed to slide on rails for third row access the rear seats are noticeably firmer than Model 3.

Just came up with this video, really good content.
The only thing that for me is not accurate is the way you measure leg room. Leg room should be the space between the back of the rear sets, to the seat in front of you, in a straight line at the height of your hips when sitting.
Thanks for watching. I am not an expert at measuring these things by any means; however, I think for the most part the two back seats are very similar. Where you get the real advantage in the Y is in the height which for me makes it fell much roomier because my knees are not so high when I sit in the Y
Thanks for sharing your opinion on both models. 😊
while the rear seats are not wider, the usable width of the Y is greater. you can easily see that by looking at the arm rest. the arm rest and middle seat is actually wider so it is easier to accomodate 3 adults where, the rear seats of the 3 is middle arm rest is smaller and the seats are more sculped making it really only usable for 2 adults. a lot of the rear seats of the 3 width is wasted on the side cushioning due to the sculping. the rear seats in the y are flat. so more of the Y's width is actually usable. this is why you cannot simply use interior dimensions as a true comparison as the seating position and sculping of the seats change the actual usable space.
Very very helpful Thank you 😊
Your videos are the best
Thanks
Is it weird that I watched this twice? Lol
One question... do you find the white seats stay clean or are they easy to clean?
I love the look but not sure which to go for.
Thanks ✌🏼
My latest video exactly covers this actually, but to sum it up, they are easy to clean and stay looking great with the exception of barely noticeable jean dye transfer and the rear seat belts rubbing black marks onto the top of seat
Thanks. I always wonder about that.
Great video, next time, remember to turn your face on! ✌🏼
Surprise that Y has no wider back seats than 3.
Yep, was a little surprising. The higher roof line and single piece of glass on top as well as the higher seats definitely make it feel roomier, but of course that wouldn’t help if you need to put three car seats across the back
The quick green lettering with sound effects dont work. Had to rewind several times to see what you labeled it as.
Thanks for letting me know for future videos
I wonder how practical seating 3 kids in the back of a 3 or a Y? I have a BMW 7-Series, and whilst the bench is wide enough (about an inch wider than the Tesla’s), the middle seat is like sitting on a hump and not desperately comfortable for our 12 y/o.
It is similar in the Model 3 and Y. 3 small adults or kids can definitely sit back there, but the middle seat is noticeably less comfortable. The 7 seat option in the Y might actually be a decent option so one kid could sit in back, but there are trade offs with that of course
great video...thank you helping me make my decision for model 3. how tall are you? I am 6ft..Hoping it will be okay.
I am just over 6ft and although the Y is easier to get in and out of, I had no problem with the 3
@@whatdrivesyou6798 Thanks for your reply. I just took delivery of Model 3 yesterday and very happy with the way car feels!
Congrats!
I needed a bit bigger second row (in width) but looks like upgrading from 3 to Y will not make any difference... shame :(
Yeah, that is the bummer. With the height it is definitely more room, but as far as width goes it is essentially the same
@@whatdrivesyou6798 why does the rear seat mid section in the Y look wider though? Are the outboard seats narrower?
@gaurav170889 the designs of the stitching are different, but I don’t think there is really any difference with the padding underneath
Totally missed out on measuring headroom here, which is where the Y is miles ahead of the 3.
Bummer
Did you see the crossbar behind his head in the Y? Comparing the danger of the headroom, the 3 is miles ahead of the Y.
May you give ur opinion which is comfy seat among these 2 cars
I think the model 3 had softer seats, but the y has more room overall so kind of depends on personal preference
Good video but you didn’t measure one major dimension!
Thats the rear seat length. The length From hip to thigh of the seat.
Thats the major thing that gona give you comfort. Thats very small in y, lesser than 3.. almost a deal breaker.
ty
How is it at the shoulders height? Would the baby seat has more space when it's rear facing?
Do you feel that the space in the rear seats for 3 ppl are better in Y or 3 or is the same? does the wider middle seat make a big difference?
I think neither is good for 3 adults, but the width of the middle seat doesn’t make much difference. There are two main differences to consider I think; the Y is taller so those with longer legs will have a more comfortable seating position in the Y; however, the seats in the 3 have a softer cushion. Sort of a trade off I guess
Is this a joke?
Model Y has WAY WAY more room than Model 3. Model 3 has zero foot space if you put driver seat on the floor which I do. Seat is 3inch lower too. And you have a lot less headroom as well.
Im literally changing from a 3 to a Y because the backseat is infinitely better in the Y.
The lower seats makes a big difference and I agree that the Y is more comfortable, but this was really a comparison of just the seats which are very similar. The hope I had initially was that the Y would be wider, but unfortunately it is not so the middle seat is still rather unusable. We love our Y though and if you want more cargo room and more comfortable seating for taller passengers in the back then it is certainly an easy choice
your measuring leg room from the front edge of rear seat is not accurate. you should measure from the back cushion instead. reason is because the depth of model 3 rear seat is longer than model y rear seat.
Thanks
What's the depth of the Model Y rear side seats (from the back cushion)? And compared to the Model 3?
I don’t actually have the model 3 anymore, but seems like a good test if someone still has both available to measure
@@whatdrivesyou6798 I see.. What's the depth of the Model Y rear side seats (from the back rest)? Seems no one measured this and it's useful for those needing to install child safety seats to know the base fit within the seat , not just the width
Looks like 19 inches
When you measure the leg room the model 3 is not set at the same articulation as the model Y.
I can't wait to test the Y. I rented the 3 performance and hated the rear seats. I don't think there's a car out there with worse seating in the back. Terrible. I do Uber and plan to buy a Tesla eventually, but can't expect happy passengers in the back. No way. The Y reclines, so I hope between that and the height is decent enough.
I have done Lyft with the 3 and didn’t get any complaints aside from one person who was probably 6’6” or taller. The Y is much easier to get in and out of height wise and the reclining seats are nice, but the seats in the 3 are softer. Best of luck to you. Be sure to get some of the stickers for the handles to help passengers get in and out; that is what I found to be the most challenging. Sometimes I had to reach back and open the door for passengers.
I also drive Uber. Planning to buy Electric Vehicle. I am still thinking if it’s worth to spend extra money on Model Y?
On paper the 3 is cheaper and would go a little further on a charge so assuming you are just looking for what is needed for UBER I think 3 is great. And it would be much cheaper if you get the standard 3 versus long range. However, Y is still more spacious and easier to get in and out of. It especially has more cargo so just a matter of personal preference really
@@whatdrivesyou6798 i sit like ass in the back of the 3. but you gotta be realistic. im 185cm so im just too tall for a compact sedan. it is what it is.
How tall are you?
6’1”
Is driver seat on Model 3 too low and stressful for back and knees? Or nothing like that and all is good? Thanks.
I never had trouble with it personally. The biggest thing I notice between the 3 and Y is how easy it is to get in and out and the overall view when in it. I always thought the seat was comfortable
@whatdrivesyou6798 I am 5 feet 7inch so getting in or out is not that much of a worry for me.
The driver seat on model 3 is so low, I am worried it will bend the knees or put too much pressure on lower back but in real life that may not be an issue I am hoping.
Model y or model 3?
Yes
You claim that soft seats are simply better. This is not clearly the case. For long trips, softer seats become uncomfortable quicker and you have more of a tendency to get butt cramps. Folks might want to pay more attention to a professional 3rd party assessment; i.e. those who know do comparisons for a living.,
Fair enough. I haven’t been in the back seats for a long time. I can only confirm that compared to the front seats, the back seats are much firmer and less comfortable immediately. I can also confirm that the driver’s seat is comfortable for me on long road trips so take it for what you will
@@whatdrivesyou6798 I agree--and the ones in back are pretty darn firm, absolutely right about that
I did many demo tests. I am pretty sure that the M3 have softer seats, softer suspension and less cabin noise.
M3 seats are more like a couch seats. Probably the most comfortable seats i ever sat on a vehicle. Firmer seats are not designed for longer trips. Model 3 way more comfortable than model y.
So no difference but in price for the MY. Lol
So helpful! Thank you
