My recommendation is to do your own color conversion. Stay with the DMC colors that you like. Then, switch out the colors that you don’t like and match up with the colors on the photo.
I would convert the colours to dmc, use the picture and then write down the colour and the number. I do this, and I also put the symbol on the bobbin or thread holder so I can see all the information. This way, you'll get the colours you like, and that looks like the picture, and it's unique to you. I love the projects you're sewing, the quaker is beautiful.
So glad to hear that you are doing okay with the wildfires. We have been affected here in Buffalo, and I don’t think you are far, so I have thought of you often, and hoping that your skies are not too hazy! I hear what you are saying about the buying the silks. I love using the fancy flosses, but they add up super quick! Happy stitching!
Wow the DMC colours look nothing like the photo and I love the photo of the Smith Sampler, I understand your dilemma. I like your idea of testing out the silks before investing.
The seasonal cross stitch pieces are from a leaflet called "Leisure Arts SEASONAL SCENES" (for anyone who might be interested in searching for the patterns).
Beautiful seasonal stitches. I have a Paula Vaughan picture my sister gave me and I love it. The rooster crowing was our alarm clock at my grandparents farm
Ive really enjoyed your flosstube! My daughter and granddaughter live in Toronto so I’ve spent a fair amount of time there in the last 7 years. Rooster
Thank you for the seasonal pattern name as I too am a seasonal person. I am also a big fan of chickens and rooster. Always looking for new floss tubes as well. It is my reality TV 😂
The rooster piece is lovely. With your anniversary piece, I would write down green for leaves, brown for tree for example and take the cover picture with you and pick DMC that look like the picture. That way you will have a piece you love. Sometimes even when you get the called for floss they don't look like the picture you loved, so I just change them to a colour that does, so I'm not disappointed. ❤
Hi Elanna, I just watched Curious Crafters and one of the sisters is stitching the Smith Sampler, the colour you are not sure of is meant to be gold not orange so you may want to change to DMC 3820 or 729 which is not so bright. Hope this helps. Looking forward to stitching This Joyous Season with you.
I reached out to the designer. I’ll let you know when I hear back. Thanks for letting us know about the problem as I’m getting ready to start The Smith Sampler. Love your videos. Enjoy your quiet time.
Nice finishes. Love the ROOSTER. I'm bummed about your Smith Sampler not being what you want. I would try to do my own conversion on it, maybe fancy floss and DMC but not silks. I ordered vintage country mocha for This Joyous Season as I was unsure when I could get Up In The Attic. I think it will be nice.
Thank you! I think vintage county mocha will look great for This Joyous Season! I think I am going to try to do my own conversion for the smith sampler. It seems so daunting though!
Love your FT and I don't have Rooster. Happy Stitching till next time. (go for all the silks, you want regard it, it's such a Beautiful pattern with lots of meaning)
Love that you keep notes, I have a special notebook so I can keep notes on fabrics, floss etc. 2 days later I can’t remember which floss tube that mentioned something. Eek….I have to go back and look at Strawberry Fields, so many are posting the pattern all of a sudden…does this chart have a rooster on it????😆😆😆 I also am finding new Utubers as they pop up!!! Great eye candy..Enjoy your stitching 🪡🧵🥰
The first chart you stitched years ago is Leisure Arts Leaflet 2442 Seasonal Scenes. I was just going through all my old charts and trying to decide what to do next while watching your video! I think I will do one of these next because I loved what you showed--probably the winter scene since it will be that season by the time I get done. I would love The Rooster and the Hens pattern! I have done a couple Little House Needleworks and I love their designs too!
I love your seasonal window finishes. I started the summer one many years ago and only need the backstitching done. I need to find the pattern so I can finish and do the others because they are so beautiful. Love the Rooster and the Hen pattern!
I would just go through your Dmc or even take the pattern and your fabric into the craft store and just do a floss toss and pick colors that look close to the finished look you’re going for. Also I would reach out to the scarlet house. I’m sure she’d be happy to help you and perhaps the dmc conversion is a typo on the chart. Because I’m sure she didn’t intend for the conversions to be orange. I really love the idea of having chickens and a rooster but I need to have fewer neighbors. Maybe one day! Have a blessed week!
You may want to check on that thread color with the designer. It may have been faded on the front and when she looked at the back it was more of an orange. It looks beautiful and is on the list of things to stitch.
I love tangents! Rooster. It shocks me how much stitchers can spend on floss. I’m currently a Dmc stitcher as I refuse to pay out but I love the variegation of hand dyed.
I enjoy your videos and your stitching is beautiful. I also watch and love Pumpkin Hollow Quilts and The Proper Stitcher. Their videos are so enjoyable. Thank you.
Hi! Choose another dmc for scarlett house! Save your $. I am joining you for the plum street. Yes up in the attic is dark, but when I held it up, it appeared lighter than being folded. Still flax would be a great option. Happy stitching.
HI from upstate NY! I have been meaning to comment as I just found your channel and have gone back and watched your earlier videos. Like you, I like seasonal projects as well! I just LOVE all of your wips. I am waiting for This is the Day to be finished at the framers. I can't wait to hang it up. So pretty! We have very similar tastes as I have a few of the same patterns/wips. In my opinion, I think you should splurge on the silks for your anniversary Smith Sampler. Just do it!! It's a very important piece especially because of your name. GO FOR IT! I am a fairly new stitcher (2021) and still stitch on Aida as I just can't seem to grasp the over 2 concept. Maybe someday I will graduate to linen, but for now I am having a blast. Anyhoo, I look forward to more videos and seeing all of your gorgeous projects. Take Care!!
Those seasonal stitches you showed were super cute! I especially love the summer one. I’m a watermelon fiend. Congrats on your finishes! Love the rooster and the hen
Good morning!! 🌞 Maine is beautiful!! Enjoy!! Oh my goodness...what a small world! So sweet of your hubby to take his mom to see her lifelong friend! 💕 Love those framed seasonal finishes!! You are a quick stitcher! Beautiful WIPS!!
Suggestion for your Anniversary start. My first thought was to find someone who has made a DMC conversion and ask them to send you what they used. My second thought is tied into the fact that you may not like the silk colors either. Remember that the pictures of pieces don't always give you a true picture of color. This is another suggestion but it will be time consuming - look up the individual silk colors on line and try to compare them to a DMC from what you see. But for goodness sake don't not make one more stitch until you find that you are happy with it. Life is too short to spent time on anything that you don't love.
Enjoy your time by yourself. For the Smith sampler you could just get the silks for the couple Dmc colors you don't like. I've mixed silk and Dmc before. That way you like the color and get to try silk and it's not as expensive. Or just pick the Dmc color you like better. Love the rooster!
I ordered the silks for the Smith Sampler and many do not match the photo at all. I kitted it up by taking it to my LNS and matching to the photo. If you like, I can send you the DMC equivalent of the silks I chose xx
My worry about the switching to the silk is that what if you don't like those colours either. I would want to be sure that this silk is the colour that you want first. LOVE quaker Christmas Two.....I need to do that one too.....lol.
I have no desire to use silk so I can't tell you to try it. But DMC has beautiful greens. There is no reason for them to choose orange. I'd pick out my choice of green and go with it. Make it what you want it to be. Love the Rooster and Hens.
Hi from Newfoundland!! Your husband must be going to the east coast to take the 16 hour ferry. I grew up 15 minutes from the PAB ferry which is 8 hours each way which is brutal. I can’t imagine taking the argentia ferry. I think the border looks fine but if you don’t like it then I’d say change now. The orange is a little bizarre for a tree trunk. Pick a colour you like that doesn’t have to be the same as the picture. I’m celebrating my fourth anniversary this year. I read somewhere that linen and silk was a possible fourth anniversary gift. I have a prefect match by silver creek samplers purchased to make a anniversary gift for myself in commemoration of my fourth anniversary. I have the linen purchased but I couldn’t find a silk conversion. Even if I could I couldn’t imagine paying $8.15 usd a skein especially when I’ve never stitched on linen. I may still keep looking for a conversion but it’s brutal how expensive silk is for us in Canada. I watched another new Canadian flosstuber this week and she had a ton of silk floss but I can’t remember where she got it. My motto is do what you enjoy and love. I’m so glad you put me onto Sheri at Colorado stitcher. I love how she takes charge of her projects and does what she likes. I look forward to seeing what you decide to do!! Thanks for sharing!!
Happy 25th Anniversary! I have a suggestion for your sampler. Try using DMC colors and remember that you can use whatever colors you want! The silks are expensive and I've not used them, but people say they are nice to work with.
Please include me in the rooster and hen draw. I’m new to cross stitch or maybe I should say a returning stitcher. ….I think if I wanted to try the silk floss I would do a small, in the same fabric as your sampler. You would get a “feel “ for it. 😊
My grandparents raised chickens and sold eggs door to door in the early 60's - the rooster used to chase us around the yard! Have a great two weeks! The Traveling Stitcher commented that she thought you and she could be sisters.
Happy 25th Anniversary. The seasonal stitches that you got back from your mom are so cute. The Rooster and Hen pattern is new to me. Enjoy your stitching time while your husband Irish traveling and thanks for sharing the story if his mom’s pen pal.
We live in Washington state and although we’re not in a rural area, we have some chickens and there is 1 rooster among them that drives us nuts all day and all night. If I knew they do this all the time, I would not have agreed to chickens… 😂
You could always choose colors on your Anniversary start piece to meet your own color preferences. You could take the chart and stand in front of a retail display cabinet and just choose color by color the ones you like. It can be a personalized version of the chart.
I’m a lover of neutral coloured fabrics also.. and I also have to order online.. when you have a moment could you let me know your faves from online shops please.. I am also in Ontario 😊
I'm loving Oct. 31st, I didn't realize the pumpkin had such nice details in it...must have now! I would, for sure, pick my own DMC's for the Smith sampler, just basing it off the cover photo. You're videos are always so nice and enjoyable😊
Honestly DMC conversions have always had issues for me. For instance, I am doing the Month 2 Month series which uses Classic Colorworks but has DMC conversions. I end up changing so many flosses. While it might be red, the saturation is way off, etc etc etc. I certainly could not afford silks. I have tried them, and Dinky Dyes is my favorite. I would try stitching 1 of each kind on your fabric before you commit to buying all of them. Sometimes stores have samples that you can try.
Songs of the seasons is gorgeous, lots more captivating than the pattern picture. Also loved seeing your 4 seasonal stitches. Little House Needleworks with rooster is so cute. Enjoying your videos. Happy 25th Anniversary 🎉
I love your "retro" seasonal pieces! They look very timeless. That's too bad about the Smith Sampler, but don't give up. I prefer stitching with DMC too. Maybe you can sit down with all the DMC s listed for the piece and go through the chart to see where they're used and compare it to the cover photo. Keep the ones that work, and put aside the ones that don't. You may find several of them will work just fine. Then search through your stash of floss to see if you find something that matches the cover for the floss colors that seem off to you. It will take some time, but once it's done, you can stitch away on the sampler you love😊. Keep in mind, and this is what bugs me, the color photos on the fronts of any pattern never seem to accurately match up to what the colors on the finished stitched project look like. The colors on the photo of the piece always seem brighter and lighter than what the actual stitched piece turns out to be (much like the fabric you purchased). It's a tough call, but take the time to find the colors that make you happy😊
Always look forward to seeing your videos! Your pieces past and present are beautiful! I'm in Indiana just under Michigan and the wild fires affected our air quality also with lots of hazy days! Prayers for all affected! Happy belated Anniversary! Love the little rooster pattern! Hope your mother in law has a wonderful time, hubby too!!
Love to watch your videos ! I hope to meet you at StitchNorth 2024! You’re going to love it 😊the Rooster and Hens stitch looks adorable . So nice of you to share it .. Thank you
Jessica from Sweettwater sent me to your videos, welcome to flosstube! Also a fan of Colorado Cross Stitcher; thank you for showing the detail on the Oct 31 white pumpkin, beautiful. Congrats on the Rooster & Hens finish
I love the Smith Sampler, but I understand how you feel. I’d definitely do dmc, converting to the colors you want - even if you find one with the colors in silk - you could match that to a dmc. If I’m understanding you correctly, it’s not what the floss is made of, but that the colors aren’t true to what you like about the photo. I see most use the silks - I can vouch for how nice Vicki Clayton silks are to work with, but I don’t know if they’re going to give you the look the called for would. Maybe compare those colors to the called for as well.
Thank you for your advice! I think I am just going to try to match the dmc. It’s seems like the easiest solution. And the quickest! I wouldn’t have to order anything!
Happy Anniversary - hope your trip to Maine is amazing! I am going to email you shortly as am so excited to have won your giveaway! I have been wanting to buy this chart for ages but its so hard to find in New Zealand (well at a price I am willing to pay hahaha) I hear you on the cost of floss, we’re paying close to NZ$2 per skein for DMC if its not on sale. It hurts! Anyway I loved seeing your update today, your pieces are always so varied and interesting. For your anniversary sampler can you swap that rust orange out for a colour from your wedding party? Like if your bridesmaid dresses for a certain colour try and match to it? However you got married a bit after me so that might mean you have watermelon coloured leaves, or peach or neon blue…. Hahahah maybe not a good idea! - take care, Nic x
Hi Nic! I just sent you an email! Congrats on the win! My bridesmaids dresses were navy so not too out there for a 90s wedding 🤣🤣. It’s a great idea though!
The Anniversary Sampler is beautiful so match the DMC to the pattern or what you like. The silk would be nice too if you want to do silk. Did you decide to keep the baby pictures as they are? I’m glad we had this cups together. 😊
Another great video. I love my husband but if I had a few weeks alone in my house I’d be in heaven 😂. I’ve never used silk before either. Maybe get a skein and try a sample piece to see if you like it. Thank you for the shout out too 💕
Hi! I am definitely looking forward to a little alone time 😂😂. I think I am going to try to do my own conversion with the DMCs and just pick colours that look close to what I want
Have you mailed The Scarlet House and ask them about the colors? I’m sure she would be happy to help. Also, remember that the photos of the sale chart is always different from the real color. They always tint those photos to make the best print for the sell of the item. Email her for sure! 😊
On your anniversary stitch, what is you just match the picture(if that's what you like) with DMC that you have. I've seen people do that. Doesn't look like there is a lot of shading. My experience has been that the pictures are deceiving.
Why don't you match your own choices of dmc to match the picture on the front? I agree... The picture is gorgeous, but i wouldn't invest in the silks for this project.
Why don’t you try a smaller pattern with a silk to give it a try first and then reconsider the larger piece? I’ve never used it myself, so I’m not much help but that’s what I thought of.
You would love silks, but I understand you’re not sure. Did you look at the called for silk colors? and try to match it with DMC? Maybe the picture is not true.
I enjoy your videos but please just hold up your stitching without gyrating it around! All of that movement makes it impossible to look at what you have stitched. By the way your lighting is just fine. The Rooster & Hen chart is really cute.
My recommendation is to do your own color conversion. Stay with the DMC colors that you like. Then, switch out the colors that you don’t like and match up with the colors on the photo.
Thank you!
Thank you!

The seasonal cross stitch pieces are from a leaflet called "Leisure Arts SEASONAL SCENES" (for anyone who might be interested in searching for the patterns).
I love it and found the chart,so happy to be able to stitch these beautiful seasonal patterns x

Rooster
Thank you!
We live in the country and have a neighbor who has a rooster that makes noise all day long. I would love to have that pattern.
Thank you for the seasonal pattern name as I too am a seasonal person. I am also a big fan of chickens and rooster. Always looking for new floss tubes as well. It is my reality TV 😂
Thank you so much for watching!!
I've driven that route and ferried to Newfoundland 9beginning in Western New York State) and it is so awesome. I would love to do it again!
The rooster and hens pattern was cute. Jessica, Sweet Water Stitcher, suggested we watch you. Enjoyed your video.
Thank you so much!!
The rooster piece is lovely. With your anniversary piece, I would write down green for leaves, brown for tree for example and take the cover picture with you and pick DMC that look like the picture. @@Mrssmithstitches Came here to say just this! :D I do this on occasion with my patterns too as I stitch mostly in DMC and have to convert frequently.
I love what you are working on and finished! Rooster

I reached out to the designer. I’ll let you know when I hear back. Thanks for letting us know about the problem as I’m getting ready to start The Smith Sampler. Love your videos. Enjoy your quiet time.

Wonderful video. Thank you for sharing. Conversions from silk to dmc can be tricky. I find my self looking through my stash and matching colors.
Thank you! It’s tricky for sure!
Enjoyed the connection of people. Enjoyed your video. I think you should by the silk and that will make you happier about your project!
Thank you!

You could always choose colors on your Anniversary start piece to meet your own color preferences. You could take the chart and stand in front of a retail display cabinet and just choose color by color the ones you like. It can be a personalized version of the chart.
Great idea!!
I’m a lover of neutral coloured fabrics also.. and I also have to order online.. when you have a moment could you let me know your faves from online shops please.. I am also in Ontario 😊
I use 123 stitch the most. Their prices are hard to beat. I have also ordered from Knowledge and Needles. She is wonderful and in Ontario!
Love your floss tube. The rooster and the hens would make such a nice pin keep. Thank you!
Thank you!
I would use the silks since it is a special stitch.
So hard to choose!
I'm loving Oct. 31st, I didn't realize the pumpkin had such nice details in it...must have now! I would, for sure, pick my own DMC's for the Smith sampler, just basing it off the cover photo. You're videos are always so nice and enjoyable😊
Thank you so much!!
Thank you! That’s a great idea!
I’ve never done a Little House Needleworks pattern before and the rooster is adorable 💕. Love your videos and all your Canadian references 🇨🇦
Songs of the seasons is gorgeous, lots more captivating than the pattern picture. Also loved seeing your 4 seasonal stitches. Little House Needleworks with rooster is so cute. Enjoying your videos. Happy 25th Anniversary 🎉
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for your reply! I am definitely going to try to do my own colour conversion
Hi Alana, The Rooster and Hens is so sweet. Love all your makes. Thank you for your podcast. All the best! Sheila
Thank you so much!
Buy one silk and do a sample motif in it.
Thank you so much!
Love to watch your videos ! I hope to meet you at StitchNorth 2024! You’re going to love it 😊the Rooster and Hens stitch looks adorable . So nice of you to share it .. Thank you
I hope so too!
Congratulations on your 25th Anniversary. Wonderful accomplishment
Thank you so much!
Jessica from Sweettwater sent me to your videos, welcome to flosstube! Also a fan of Colorado Cross Stitcher; thank you for showing the detail on the Oct 31 white pumpkin, beautiful. Congrats on the Rooster & Hens finish
Thank you for dropping by!!
Bit the bullet and buy the silks…it’s something you are doing that’s very special to you..
Definitely go get the silks u will annoy yourself with it if the colours aren't right.
Would love the rooster ❤❤
I think so too!
Another cute video. #1,#2
That's a cute LHN design. I'm doing my 2nd chart for Summer Camp.
Sounds great!
I have a rooster running with my hens. I like to raise chick's. Hope you find a conversion for the Smith sampler
Thank you!
The Anniversary Sampler is beautiful so match the DMC to the pattern or what you like. The silk would be nice too if you want to do silk. Did you decide to keep the baby pictures as they are? I’m glad we had this cups together. 😊
Thank you so much! I haven’t decided on the baby samplers yet😊
Have you asked Roxy floss about a conversion? They have been doing some and might have one.
That’s a great idea! I might send them a message!
Have you mailed The Scarlet House and ask them about the colors? I’m sure she would be happy to help. Also, remember that the photos of the sale chart is always different from the real color. They always tint those photos to make the best print for the sell of the item. Email her for sure! 😊
I haven’t yet. But that’s a great idea! Thank you!
On your anniversary stitch, what is you just match the picture(if that's what you like) with DMC that you have. I've seen people do that. Doesn't look like there is a lot of shading. My experience has been that the pictures are deceiving.
Thank you! I think that’s what I am going to try to do!
Why don't you match your own choices of dmc to match the picture on the front? I agree... The picture is gorgeous, but i wouldn't invest in the silks for this project.
Hello! I think that’s what I am going to try to do
Why don’t you try a smaller pattern with a silk to give it a try first and then reconsider the larger piece? I’ve never used it myself, so I’m not much help but that’s what I thought of.
I think I might try that!
You would love silks, but I understand you’re not sure. Did you look at the called for silk colors? and try to match it with DMC? Maybe the picture is not true.
Maybe there is a mistake in the DMC number on the pattern? Email the designer.
I love that there are roosters in the chart esp. how they are under the quilt
I enjoy your videos but please just hold up your stitching without gyrating it around! All of that movement makes it impossible to look at what you have stitched. By the way your lighting is just fine. The Rooster & Hen chart is really cute.
