I frequented the original Kelston Georgie Pie in the early 80's and onwards. Those were the best pies of all time. It's enough to make a grown man cry.
Thanks Mike, it was one of our final projects we produced when we were just youngins at broadcasting/film school. Was a truly great fun to put together as a team.
Tauranga Georgie Pie awesome Thanks for making this ! I remember flatting and one of the guys did the weeks shopping and brought 150 Mince and Cheese pies for $150 !!!!!
This is the first video that I've responded to, thank you for your hard efforts, you certainly have taken a lot of New Zealanders including myself back down memory lane, Georgie Pie was indeed the most memorable foods of the 90's The legacy of Georgie Pie will always live on. "BRING BACK GEORGIE PIE"
Let's bring it back. I am still missing GP in Glenfield (At the corner of Glenfield rd and Wairau rd). My son, Vincent used to enjoy visiting that place!!!!
My best mates mum was the afternoon shift manager there. When she cleaned up for closing time she'd bring home the unsold pies. We used to feast on all of them . Miss those days and the GP Glenfield
I loved the Highland Park Georgie Pie, my brother and sister won bikes from their colouring contest, and I won some stuff too. But it was their pies that were the best. I went to Pakuranga College as well. I miss Georgie Pie.
I love Georgie pies, dad and I would go to Greenlane Georgie pies and have our own pie eating contest, with me being the winner every time. But these were great pies and memories with my dad. My favourite Georgie pie was the pork and vegetable pie, I literally still get cravings for it now.
a relative of mine has some video footage of the tauranga Georgie Pie , I will be getting a copy of this hopefully before the end of the year and I will upload it .
Wow, I almost cried from the emotions of bringing back the George! haha! Shot Gareth and his crew! Wish u did the one day exercise in Auckland! But crackup that I used to work with Brian Popham at Air NZ! Now I will email him for the pie recipie!
Georgie Pie, Highland Park was just across from Pakuranga College where I went to school. I revisited Auckland recently & it doesn't look the same without Georgie Pie. Does anybody remember "Uncles" food bars? They are gone also! I used to walk home drunk from the White Horse, Pakuranga & stopping at the top of the hill for a Seadog (which was really just a crabstick smothered in melted cheese & tartare sauce in a long steamed roll) There was one in Panmure also I MISS THOSE DAYS
I remember Zap also. How about Tang? It was a cordial...but so much better than Refresh or Raro. I recently rediscovered it. Not here in NZ but in the Philippines. Some Asian stores are stocking it here though. How about Crazy Joes
Awesome video! Georgie Pie = Everything this dude said in the beginning of the documentary. YEAH Kelston Boys at 17:17. We were loyal patrons. Off topic....do any of you guys remember the drink ZAP?
This fella's got those Tom Holland vibes. Takes me back to my days growing up in Tauranga and me and my mates smashing those $1 🥧. Loved Georgie Pies ❤
Georgia Pie was King of pies No.1 bestseller in its hey day. Value for money perfectly made with the best pastry second to none a real family place to visit. Used to go on my lunch break to buy one until one day I went but it just closed without much notice only to say GP is closing no reason given as to why all branches closing & staff made jobless overnight! I was gutted had no lunch that day was heartbroken. Unfortunately, due to poor management of expansions & business practices they fell on hard times leaving them open for big global giants to take advantage of their vulnerable state. Being sold to globalization was worse thing for Kiwi icon as McDonald's clearly knew they couldn't compete with GP so they did what any bully does best take them out but in our case for good NO RETURN as Kiwis love their pies too much more than burgers! McDonald's did not win the loyalty of fans of the pies as it left everyone with a bitter taste in their mouths as how could this have happened to a good successful business serving generations of die hard pie lovers! McDonald's will never bring GP back don't we all know it. They tried to in a promotion period but it was all hype total crap pies nothing like GP!! Hope someday the King of pies reigns again, never buy from McDonald's as they have no concept of making pies & they throughout history have stolen & burned businesses & taken ideas from others claiming for themselves as they have the funds & powers to do it as $$$ talks! GP is gone but never forgotten we all still have fond memories & they can't take those away from us ! ❤😄👍
Absolutely, as soon as they made that move it was the start of the death spiral. Sent the wrong message that their pies were only worth a dollar, and left no room for inflation. No one with any sense bought a slightly bigger pie for twice the price! Just a epically stupid business move.
We went thru the Georgie Pie drive-thru in Christchurch in a stretch limousine. The bend in the drive-thru proved to be quite a challenge. Hence, that was the first and last time that limo went thru the Georgie Pie drive-thru. 😂
You also missed out hard, GP had the best pies. you could go there and get like pies for 2 bucks and they were not small either but most ppl would still buy a few each because they were so cheap. I think the regular pies where 1 dollar and the cheese one where 2 dollars i recall something like this loosely but i don't recall the other flavours. You could also get a combo so chips and a drink. i recall that the parents would just buy a few of each for each kids or like in a combo but with extra pies and what you couldn't eat just got doggy bagged home for later. like it was the shit i would say better than McDonalds. Well at least the McDonalds we have now as imo its gone downhill since the 90s. Most 90s kids in the north island would of had a birthday party at Georgie pie 100% and probably going back because it was since the 70s. They need to bring it back. I recall going there as a kid and it was always packed like you could barley get seats and often you would have to wait until other people leave. The one we used to go to was always kind of messy because it was so busy but it was good.
The Green Lane mcdonald used to be a Georgi pie in my dad's day, people used to tease them a bit because it was called their "international headquarters" I remember years ago McDonald's did a promotion where they brought it onto their menu for a brief while, we had come back from a car show and it was on the menu. also there was a random lady getting into a fight about change with the cashier, back in the day before all the ordering terminals
Growing up in Aus, always heard about kiwis pies whenever tried anyway. I'm moving to Wellington in a few years time, and when I get there I'm finally going to experience and try out kiwi pies, and I want try a hangi.
Recommended to me in 2024 and this is fucking fantastic. Fuck McDonalds for teasing us with a re-opening (must've been ten years ago?) and then only selling pies for six months.
@cheezer57 Hi there, cheers for the comment, yeah you're right on it, hot ground hamburger beef with melted cheese in-cased in a hot crispy pastry.. sometimes they create different flavours with the mince, eg. curry mince, peppered steak, steak & cheese, thai chicken, butter chicken, bacon & egg, mince cheese and bacon.. yum. Getting hungry now
I'm from the states, and we have never heard of Georgie pies here..Basically, what is inside..We don't use the term mince here, unless you're talking about mince meat pie, which is more of a fruit pie, with raisins, and other weird stuff in it, and is served room temp., or cold..Not very popular, but not too bad..Haven't seen it in years..I'm assuming mince is simply chopped beef, what we call chop(ped) meat, or simply ground beef. (Hamburger meat.) It sounds like Cheeseburger in a pie. Correct?
for me personally why georgie pie went down: I originally loved georgie pie after coming to new zealand, but eventually I think it was down to quality control... there was times back in the 90's where you order a georgie pie and end up getting a paper clip in the pie... a staple... or a egg shell I'm glad Mc Donalds took georgie pie back... I tried the beef mince n cheese pie the other and it tasted just like it was back then, I can't wait for them to bring back the chicken and vege pie...
Worked for Georgie Pie as a Trainee Manager. They were gearing up big time before they supposedly "had" to sell. I don't believe that! I think the owners were made an offer that was too good to refuse. ( If their pies cost 1.10 to produce, they could simply have increased the price... even doubled it. People still would have bought them.) Hundreds of Kiwis lost their jobs and career paths. Greedy corporate BS!
yes the pricing obviously killed them...i couldnt believe you could get a good quality pie for one dollar...i would of paid way more....not good marketing on there behalf but you would have more knowledge there. Macdonalds will price the trademark so high no one will buy it....they now have the best location sites, letting GP get back in the game would take customers so the smart business thing to do is not let them back in. Mdonalds gave us a brief taste of the pies which was great but they stopped it unfortunately...
Georgie Pie went out of business because they were not making enough money. McDonald's snapped up a lot of their outlets. Frankly, their pies were small and had pastry like stiff cardboard. The best pies come from independent bakeries, the best burgers from independent burger bars. But this is a good documentary.
I'm 50 this year and I never had Georgie Pie. I don't really remember Georgie Pie that much to be honest, maybe it wasn't that popular in Christchurch?
I frequented the original Kelston Georgie Pie in the early 80's and onwards. Those were the best pies of all time. It's enough to make a grown man cry.
This doco was shockingly good for an amateur. Enjoyed every minute 😁
Best youtuber in 2024
Thanks Mike, it was one of our final projects we produced when we were just youngins at broadcasting/film school. Was a truly great fun to put together as a team.
13 years ago jeez,
My god. That was first class production. You have become a kiwi icon yourself now! Congrats.
Oh the memories Glenfield GP - Thank you soooo much!!
Tauranga Georgie Pie awesome Thanks for making this ! I remember flatting and one of the guys did the weeks shopping and brought 150 Mince and Cheese pies for $150 !!!!!
I now live in Australia, and none of my friends here will never understand how good Georgie Pie is.
It was never good.
Let it go
That classic kiwi double negative 😅
This is the first video that I've responded to, thank you for your hard efforts, you certainly have taken a lot of New Zealanders including myself back down memory lane, Georgie Pie was indeed the most memorable foods of the 90's The legacy of Georgie Pie will always live on. Great documentary that should screen on telly. Well done man. Shame not that many have watched so far. Bring back Georgie Pie!
Nostalgia's a hell of a drug
Let's bring it back.

G'day Mate
Watching this 10 years to the day! loved it.
this was awesome as, brought back fond memorys

"A customer getting rowdy or... jacked up on pies"
Priceless.
First time seeing this, brilliant doco.
This is full of golden one liners...My headache is gone! 22.56... I was inwardly jealous 🤣
This is damn good journalism!
Very good, well done. I hope your are still creating. Best regards from Japan.
Can they bring back Sparkles? Loved those as a kid
And Deck...
The icon is back but at a price. $4.50 for a mince n cheese is a big rip off and it doesn't taste anything like the original.
And they didn't bring the plain mince pie back :( I absolutely hate cheese, so still haven't been able to try one and reminisce!
I worked for G.P in the late 80s, awesome place, awesome pies, awesome people
Great to hear that Georgie pie is back to the future.
PORK AND VEGETABLE PIE FROM GEORGE PIES, WAS MY ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE, BRING IT BACK, THAT EXACT ONE..
a relative of mine has some video footage of the tauranga Georgie Pie , I will be getting a copy of this hopefully before the end of the year and I will upload it .
Back in the day, some of my classmates had after-school jobs at the Highland Park (Howick/Pakuranga) branch. Those were the days......
Richard Voogd omg that’s the Georgie pie I went to when I was little. I’m now in aus and miss those pies 🤤
This doco is excellent!
great documentary bro!! all da way from hawaii!!
Wow, I almost cried from the emotions of bringing back the George! haha! Shot Gareth and his crew! Wish u did the one day exercise in Auckland! But crackup that I used to work with Brian Popham at Air NZ! Now I will email him for the pie recipie!
Awesome pastry
Loved Zap.
the chocolate milk drink?
The original primo 😂
Used to have Georgie Pie at Porirua after swimming competitions in the 90's. Good times!
Georgie Pie, Highland Park was just across from Pakuranga College where I went to school.
I revisited Auckland recently & it doesn't look the same without Georgie Pie.
Does anybody remember "Uncles" food bars?
They are gone also!
I used to walk home drunk from the White Horse, Pakuranga & stopping at the top of the hill for a Seadog (which was really just a crabstick smothered in melted cheese & tartare sauce in a long steamed roll)
There was one in Panmure also
I MISS THOSE DAYS
HoldenMcgutzen Yes Uncles on the Pakuranga highway. A Chinese couple were running it.
Uncles , was best place to get a feed , 😊 G.I AND PANMURE ,
well done !! great documentary
The end of that commercial made me laugh, what a classic!
I still miss Georgie Pie now
Awesome video! Georgie Pie = Everything this dude said in the beginning of the documentary. YEAH Kelston Boys at 17:17. We were loyal patrons
loved the closing line hahahaha
HAHAHAHAH freaking hilarious 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I remember Zap also.
How about Tang?
It was a cordial...but so much better than Refresh or Raro.
I recently rediscovered it.
Not here in NZ but in the Philippines.
Some Asian stores are stocking it here though.
How about Crazy Joes
This brings back memories...they have the best pies ever
Bring it back
Watching this in 2004 memorys kelston branch.
Awesome video! Georgie Pie = Everything this dude said in the beginning of the documentary. YEAH Kelston Boys at 17:17. We were loyal patrons. Off topic....do any of you guys remember the drink ZAP?
My favorite childhood❤❤❤
This fella's got those Tom Holland vibes.
Takes me back to my days growing up in Tauranga and me and my mates smashing those $1 🥧. Loved Georgie Pies ❤
My favourite GP was at Greenlane...bring it back please. GP is still produced at Maccaas, similar but not the same
I was born in NZ but grew up most of my childhood in Oz. One of the only photos I have from my time in NZ is a photo taken at Georgie Pie, lol.

good on you bro, awesome doco you made :)
Thanks for giving Ray a hand
I miss georgie pie, even though the cheap prices were great i think they should have kept the normal prices and maybe they would still be here
Absolutely, as soon as they made that move it was the start of the death spiral. Sent the wrong message that their pies were only worth a dollar, and left no room for inflation. No one with any sense bought a slightly bigger pie for twice the price! Just a epically stupid business move.
I missed Georgie Pie , it was my ❤️ pie when I lived in NZ , kids have pie after school , as its very closed to school ,it was $1 👍
Can remember reports of loyal customers stoking up their freezers with Georgie Pies before it sadly closed.
Awesome doco, i love this :D
Absolutly Brilliant , from Vivienne Gold Coast "Proud Kiwis Abroad "
We went thru the Georgie Pie drive-thru in Christchurch in a stretch limousine. The bend in the drive-thru proved to be quite a challenge. Hence, that was the first and last time that limo went thru the Georgie Pie drive-thru. 😂
cant wait to taste these pies again!!! georgie pic is coming back!
In samoa its called "Siosi Pie"
I never got to try a Georgie pie. Never made it to Blenheim sadly. Makes me think of Cobb n Co

The one and only birthday party i was fond of was my fifth birthday at Georgie Pie Manukau

"Excelsior Bakery" in Wainuiomata or "Real Meat Pies" in Woburn, Lower Hutt are my recommendations :)
hangi is just a earth oven, like a samaon umu... not really nice imo
Recommended to me in 2024 and this is fucking fantastic. Fuck McDonalds for teasing us with a re-opening (must've been ten years ago?) and then only selling pies for six months.
❤ bring back Georgie pie

21:19 "No pie for you!" **snatch**
Mmmm the seafood pie was one of my favourite.
ITS BACK!
Dipping chips into the pie at the George pie in takanini ... circa 1999.
Still watching in 2024
Loved Georgie pies
I remember Georgie pie .. bring it back but the starting price would be no less than 10$ and no ones gonna pay that for a pie
for me personally why georgie pie went down:
I originally loved georgie pie after coming to new zealand, but eventually I think it was down to quality control... there was times back in the 90's where you order a georgie pie and end up getting a paper clip in the pie... a staple... or a egg shell

im hungry for georgie pie in 2024
Just saw the article in herald about the lawsuit. Stick it to the man! Bring back the George!!!!!!!!!
0:57 At least his two dads love him.
Steve Parr from Sale of the Century ?

In correct they were killing McDonald's so McDonald's gave them a offer they couldn't refuse
You can never beat a good dollar pie ... fuk the independent ones they charge though the roof mostly
@@alicetango6725 Yes, almost seven dollars for a pie.
I heard whispers of a rat tail find at a Georgie pie in Wellington
I'm 50 this year and I never had Georgie Pie. I don't really remember Georgie Pie that much to be honest, maybe it wasn't that popular in Christchurch?
Definitely bring bk our local pie bk they were always delicious and hot
@bored1980 DONE, so if they ever do get rid of this.... a number of us will still have and can continue to spread the word.
New Zealand has the best pies
Don't worry, we got Aussie back with the demise of Ansett Australia
An airline for a pie company. Either way they were both sad demises. We've both learned our lesson and it hasn't happened since.
The guy in this I doubt was even born when GB was around.
I was thinking the same thing my bro!
They did for a bit a few years ago but the pies were nothing like the originals. Was so pissed off
G is for Georgie!
P is for Pie!
P for Perfect, F for Fries!
diddle-diddle-dum...GO!
