i do not think by not answering the radio the out come would have been any different, you would have had the same drive line same popped off tyre and broken CV. you will not control a heavy vehicle with two hands hitting a rut like that and that is part of driving 4x4.

First thing I thought when I saw Torbs crash, was he screwed up. As a pilot you’re taught to always aviate, navigate the communicate - In that order. Same applies here.
So as far as navigate goes, should he have walked the route first? Remember the camera crew almost made it.
Do we get a walkthrough of the problems and work on Torbs truck? I can only imagine what needs to be done.

What's the big deal? You guys got out of there because of your combined experience. That was one of your greatest videos ever. Congratulations guys that was awesome content. Going by the weather in the rest of Australia that week you guys got off lightly.
We need more content like that, a 4x4 car trying to reach a nice destination but gets stuck then attempts self recovery once and twice, if all fail pull it using another vehicle. I think such content is great whether the stuck situation was done intentionally or unintentionally, as at the end it is great entertainment and education content. Keep up the good work!

That’s a good debrief session! Hindsight is always 20/20. Your decision making at the time, makes a lot more sense now.
You can get mixed messages at Mt Dare. We had more than an inch of rain overnight while there, and were told by one person to wait till about 9am for the road update assuming it would be closed, while another person told us to get going now as they can't stop us going if we're already in there. We got going.
The series was one of the best I have seen on this channel and it was obvious that the unpredictable weather was the real cause of the problems. The keyboard warriors who think it was all some sort of setup haven't got a clue as always. Good to know this channel still takes note of the comments on UA-cam though. One channel in particular made a point of disrespecting its YT viewers by telling them that their comments would no longer be read... ...despite that fact that that channel would not be what it is today without its YT viewers.
Debriefs are probably a good idea. Especially for trips like this. Lots of great advice and hindsight for others to learn from.
Love the debrief session. I think it’s very useful as everyone can learn valuable lessons from what went right/wrong and what to watch out for in the future. 👍👍

Hindsight is a beautiful thing, if you’re going to travel to extreme remote areas, you’re gonna face obstacles no matter what!
The footage of Torbs’s Cruiser powering through that track is, by far the best 4WD vision I’ve ever seen on any channel!!

Living in the outback I've noticed the thing with weather reports is they're for a huge area. It's not so much that they're wrong, it's you don't know if you're in the spot where the rain is going to hit.
I've got a mate who always says, "I wouldn't have done that!!!" but he never does fuck all!!
The trolls, fault-finders and hole-pokers aside, this was one of your realest and best footages ever. Having made it across other numerous and nasty salt lakes and the Prado having nearly made it across, you had no way of knowing the surprise that awaited you.
So Ronny, no need to beat yourself up for this or feel guilty for what befell Torbs. You both made the best decisions you could have made at the time and based on the assessments you made together.
Most importantly, you had fun, we ( your fans) enjoyed every bit of it and felt like we were in that situation ourselves at that very moment, and last but not least everyone came out of it unscathed and more knowledgeable.
If I were you, I would confidently say given another chance and hnder the same circumstances, I would do everything the same way I did.
After all you were on an adventure and not a walk in the park.

I'm a Simpson Desert veteran with my 13th crossing this year, including the French & WAA Lines, Rig Road, the K1 & Warburton Tracks, and also the Madigan & Hay River Tracks.
My Simpson crossings include one solo, the others either with a second accompanying vehicle or over the past 5 years leading a convoy of Simpson Desert "newbies" for my retirees only 4WD Club.
I've never experienced, or want to, the conditions you did in your trip. But no doubt it will happen one day?
Whilst everyone has an opinion of what you should have or have not done, there is no perfect solution: just lot's of armchair experts stating their opinion.
I venture the thought, but not critism, that your decisions were in the majority influenced by your time frame & supplies (heading to Sydney for a 4X4 show, insufficient food to camp and wait for the clay pans to dry, extra fuel usage because of the conditions and an unknown weather forecast for the following few days.)
I accept from your many previous UA-cam posts that you didn't just go for it so you had great footage for your UA-cam posts.....unlike 24/7!!!
I have learnt from these recent posts and will also use these UA-cam posts as a training resource for my 4WD prospective Simpson Desert trip participants.
I now have a clearer action plan that I would undertake if I ever experience the conditions you experienced. No point in posting it for the keyboard warriors to abuse.

Hey Ronny and Torbs, your last couple of videos were an absolute cracker! I loved the way you are having an interview with each other afterwards. You can still see Torbs dealing with the PTSD after the whole incident haha. Mate I am feeling your pain. With a debrief you are supposed to ask what you did well, and what you could have done better. Can I suggest that next time, you might have read the info provided by Mt Dare and Desert Parks.
Quote from Mt Dare website: "If salt lakes are wet, stay STRICTLY to the wheel tracks in the centre (I mean it), maintain a steady moderate pace about 15 - 25k/hr and DON"T use excessive speed, it won't help; 2nd low range is fine. If you become bogged ensure your tyres are reduced (14-16psi is good) and have another vehicle enter behind you and "snatch" you out. MaxTrax are great if you're on your own. There are detours to the North around most Salt Lakes if required. "
Over the past 30 years the advice has been to not cross a wet salt lake and they all have bypass tracks to the north. Not sure how you didn't know this. Don't expect the good people at Mt Dare to chase after you just to warn you about everything. You must do your own research. Its all there if you look.
In any desert its best to stop and stay put when it rains - give it a couple of days and avoid the drama. Thats why we take all that extra food, water and fuel.
And can I also suggest you invest in a HF Radio for the desert trips. Its very easy to check in in a group such as VKS and there's a helpful person at the other end who is only too happy to give you a current weather report, forecast or make a phone call to help you out.

Around 8 minute mark you say "always go through the middle where everyone else has driven", but when you got to Big Red, you totally did the opposite and got bogged, even though the sign said you violate aboriginal land by not going through the middle. So folks, make up your mind which it is.
Hey Ronny and Torbs, we encountered the same situation about 6 weeks later, left mount dare and weather was predicted sunny the whole time. Yet, we got a huge storm roll through just as we arrived at the salt pan heading east on the French line to poepel cnr. The lake went under water literally and we ended up driving around on the edge, it was a battle. We drove up the next pan which you guys were on from the k1 line up to qaa line and there was a 76 just got across that line. We drove the same line around that you did. It was very unpredictable. Very interesting trip and we hadn’t seen your video yet. No judgement here, you did what you did, it was unlucky torbs grabbed in the mud and that situation happened

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, everything we watch is through that perspective. When you’re there and in the moment things aren’t so clear. Shit happens, no one died, life goes on.

I think we all have done things which we think we could do or done better after the fact. the important part is to reflect, learn and apply your learnings going forward, adapt and overcome. Great job 🍻
The Rut that Torbs fell into, to me looks like an FN Big Hole that, once upon a time, somebody had dug to retrieve their Vehicle.

Ronny you are touching on a fantastic point here with weather. So many people I run across are super sure of the weather as they 'have this or that weather app'. But as you state the number of AWS, Automatic Weather Stations,in Australia is pitifully small given the low cost with improvements in technology.
Take the Lake Macquarie region. In 2007 during the Pasha Bulker storm there were only two AWS recording rainfall around the Lake. This is a region of 300 000 people. Now there is five.
Lismore had 6 during the big flood early in 2022. Three weren't working and two went under water, literally, in the first hour leaving one in the catchment.
Now go remote and there is hundreds if not thousands of kilometres between AWS's. Yet people put faith in the apps.
Another popular 4WD 'Tuber has regularly camped on gravel bars in rivers and creek on the eastern seaboard. A absolute no no as far as I was taught as a kid. One very intense, yet localised thunderstorm 80 kilometres away in the top of the mountains late in the evening, and ones camp and vehicle could be succumb to a wall of water. The results of these ill informed actions lead to closures of public lands.
Many viewers here would be too young to know that back in the eighties and early nineties you could camp the full length of the eastern shore of the Myall Lakes Broadwater from Mungo Brush to Bombah Point. That all changed when a tree fell on a tent killing a boy. Now it is camping in NPWS designated sites only. And that event was completely random.
My point here is that we should not have blind faith in technology, and should be skilled and equipped to make decisions relevant to what is happening, or could happen, where we actually are.
Keep up the great content and hope Torbs' 'cruiser is back fully operational again.
Curious why not a Garmin inReach? There's coverage in Australia. I've used it extensively for weather in remote regions of the USA to get hour by hour weather forecasts. In alpine areas where weather changes fairly dramatically, two or three detailed forecasts a day when travelling or backpacking really helps for planning. Takes a bit of time, sometimes 5-10 minutes waiting on a satellite to come overhead to pull the forecast, but it gives you decent options at getting fairly granular weather. However, I don't know the accuracy of weather forecasts in Australia.
With the amount of experience Ronny and Torbs have, you can afford to push the 4wd boundaries occasionally. Both are intelligent and clever drivers, but regardless, any trip can have unpredictable and unforeseeable moments for any seasoned driver. This simply adds to the 4wdriver's learning guide. It's an adventure after all, whether good or bad, and we don't always get it right. That's just part of the learning experience. They weren't "hooning" it for the sake of a good shot like some channel's. It's really got to be seen in context.

You could have just let it go and all would have been good, but i think some of the trolls suggesting that you either set that all up, or you were just stupid, did get to you. I reckon you have a ton of integrity and wanted to both clarify your decision making, but also acknowledge that no matter how experienced and prepared you are, our giant magnificent country is hell dangerous and can throw the most wicked curve balls at you that most of us, experienced or not, can sometimes misjudge. All of the questions that were raised, did concern me after the vids, but i think you have given context and I'm happy with that. By the way, I'm a 60+yo who spent a large part of my young adult life around the entire NW before any bitumen was laid, in vehicles including a 69 F100 2x with an old Canadian 6.

Cruizers are heavy and in many ways too heavy, especially mud with hard ditches. That's what happened, especially if you combine it with speed, unlike sand. Thank's for doing what many of us wish we could be doing. Drop that top heavy weight to ease the Cruisers & consider changing the Leaves to over the Diff... You have the Ching to do it right. Keep them coming, you Auzi mothers ! :)
Good recap this. There is no way I'd have been as calm in that situation and if anything that is the stand out element of the films for me. It's ultimately what got you guys out. I'd have still been stuck there trying to remember everything I've learnt from the school of Ronny Dahl 😂
Improvise, adapt, and overcome. This trip provided great training to all overlanders with solid axles. Also excellent recovery training.
Afterwards its always easy to say, one should have done this or that. I think no one is to blame for what happened.
What me impressed was, how everyone reacted. That was comradeship. For Torbs it must have been really catastrophic. First this almost crash with the driveshaft damage and then the electric fire…

Personally that trip was one of my favourites it was like a 4wd blockbuster film
The one thing we can take away from this is that we are all human and as such all make mistakes. Regardless of whether we are a famous youtuber or just a regular person.

The whole trip was great viewing and whatever took place on the way is exactly what 4x4ing is all about , mistakes are made but learnt from just like life and the blame game is a waste of time and breath . Great content Ronny. Run your channel they way you want it. You don’t have to justify the reason why you do things. That’s what makes us as human beings and being different. Some of these key board warriors will always criticise what you do regardless and I can guarantee that some of them has never ever do 90% of the things your doing. Do what makes you happy and we loved your content and keep it coming. I’m an ex-flight instructor and used to teach Aviate, Navigate, Communicate.
Fly the aircraft, consider where you are going, and talk about it last. So, in this instance, don’t grab the microphone to talk when in the middle of a critical moment. Even if someone is calling, ignore the call and fly the aircraft first and foremost.
It’s good to hear you talking about the weather planning, and the carriage of extra food etc.
Excellent to see an incident debrief.
Some of the best stories happen randomly or accident, they are sometimes tough but memories for the most are worth it.
Personally, those salt pans scare the shit out of me.
Once a saw a light vehicle bogged.
I would have just driven the long way and sucked on 3 beers doing do.
But when a group of people get together there is pressure and multiple ideas and dufferent levels of understanding.
I've felt stranded and helpless before.
Once you've done that, you do whatever to avoid potential risks...

IMO Your only mistake was going out to Poeppel Corner for a look. You were short on fuel, running behind schedule with dangerous conditions to get through. Luckily it didn't cause an issue but that detour was not necessary. Torbs run across the lake wins mine vote for best 4wd content of the year. Keep up the great work.

I do not see the hype, it is part of overlanding, awesome trip guys!! It is funny how some people do not understand the concept of making the best decision when overlanding, and its clear they have never done it and still question the decisions made by experience overlanders. it is quite obvious why you did not drive around the salt pan. 1st it is fun driving in mud LOL 2nd how far is it and does fuel allow for such a detour and 3rd Safety: if you do not know the detour is drivable. Anyone with a lot to say probably regarding should you have been there or not has probably never done much of anything because anyone who has done a decent amount of wheeling or camping has been caught out somewhere by the weather at some point. If you were paranoid about every forecast you’d never go anywhere 🤣 It’s shit when it happens, and when remote it’s even harder!
Whenever there's a negative IOD, expect the dry season to be cut short by weeks and a conga line of troughs across Central Australia. Where these troughs dump their rain is completely unpredictable. Don't rely on forecasts and expect the worst.

quite a good question-led debreif, a lot of people should do more of these. 100% good idea.
As I see it, you were a little underprepaired as didn't have the spares you as a Toyota driver should have had, CV's seem to be the nemesis of the vehicles, they always break, so keep them in the spares. Food, you should keep at leat 7 days more than you plan for, 3 days is borderline as you found out. Weather: Have you considered a HF weather forcast system, then you can download the weather anywhere in the world! You need a HF radio, computer or tablet and them linked, then run the program. It takes a little while to get the forcasts through but it can be a lifesaver and having a dynamic plan or "B" and "C" plans to fall back on can be made looking at upto date information.
As for the nasty trollers, if they were in the same situation they'd either not go (so never really know) or whould they really do anything different? Possibly worse? You have to deal with the situation how it is at the time, you got out so that's a win.
Could you also do a review on the trailer I want to know how it went.
26:30 pro tip, a PTFE spray lubricant does wonders for renewing windshield wipers and probably would have helped there too

Intentionally or not, Torbs was in full-on "here comes the cavalry!" mode... and, in this case, it would've been smarter to use a bit of prudence.
Too often I see on a few channels guys driving full noise with no mechanical sympathy, bouncing, & capsizing or breaking gear, & getting stuck. Then the next dude or dudette crawls through with no dramas to rescue them

I think it would have happened either way, not reaching for the uhf the car would have still been in the same situation.
Hindsight is fantastic, maybe I would have gone to 10psi and crawled it, but that's my style of driving.

Yes i think you crossed the salt lake for exciting content and it was . Torb's unusually went gungho to make the crossing more exciting but yes in hindsight he should have gone a bit slower and not loose control which damaged his vehicle . No worries , it was great to see even the experts can get it wrong and ended up great footage :-)
As for checking the weather once outside mobile coverage, a barometer will give you some indication of what is coming
i think certain vehicles should still have them from factory, like the old Toyotas and mitsubishi did

I also live in an area that the weather can change quite suddenly. Tracks here change a lot with use especially during hunting season. Rain water doesn't dry up very quickly here (swamp) in the winter. If I would have hit that hole a@ 40kph I may have been the only thing retrievable. No fault seen by me, with such a long wet track you just never know what's under there.
Got caught in a masaive Storm at Haig 2 weeks ago, intent was to head east following the trans railway, did the right thing after getting stuck in the mud and decided to headback to Kalgoorlie, thought we had comms etc how hard could it be......
But, without any thought or process and making foolish decisions, we decided to do the Connie Sue to Cocklebiddy.
Got right royally bogged up to the gunnels and spent the night in rain, in Mud, in a spate of panic. I do understand how Torbs felt.
I made all the wrong decisions but thankfully had all the right equipment.
The one thing i Learned was to stop, assess, and understand what your doing... experience learned the hard way

We all need to understand that the Prado is much lighter than Torbs 79 series.
I think he did what he could and probably would choose a different line next time.
A driver has to expect distraction. They, and only they, determine where they place their focus.
Probably the worst decision was at the start of the crossing where Ronnie talked about going around the outside but decided to go straight across. In the end, to make sure one of you got through Ronnie went around, probably would have saved a lot of time by all going around. But hindsight is a great thing and we have all made these errors.

7kms took us 5 hours, you commit yourself and hope for the best
I like this review of your trip and it never hurts to analyse where to implement changes for next time.
Something I recommend is thinking about fitting RCV Brand front axle shafts.
The warranty is unlimited and for comp's/tyre size. I've wheeled with so many Cruiser/Nissan/Jeepers that have broken front axle shafts including me and never has anyone broken one again once they've upgraded to RCV's 😁😉
As a new subscriber I'm really enjoying the content. As for the crossing it is what it is, nobody got hurt... I think underestimate the Prado. Travel Safe and Enjoy 👍🏼🇦🇺
If you were to do it again, would you have sacrificed the comfort and ease of the new trailer, for the less comfortable, but easier to tow Patriot? Or does the new trailer tow as well as you stated the Patriot does?
Tbf any camper trailer/toy hauler’s gonna haul you back no matter, that amount of weight is being pulled, the cars can’t cooperate with it.

Now I'm thinking should I apply the same rules about checking the weather in the outback as a skipper follows in the remote open ocean, in other words checking the weather several times daily... but that would require access to correct weather data, which begs the requirement for weather electronics similar to what's provided from maritime weather equipment but which would instead work on moving motor vehicles... there's content for you Ronny, what 4WD weather equipment is available and what should manufactures make available via satellite for 4WD applications to provide real time weather data e.g. via starlink

When I first saw the video I did think Taub was going too fast, but unless you are in that situation you don't know how you would react. I'm just glad it all worked out.
If the weather bureau ever gets it right I'll walk, to Birdsville and acknowledge barefooted. Also as my late father would say hindsight is 20/20. I personally think all things considered you all done well to get out of there in more or less one piece .

22:00 "You have a legal right to get out" Please quote relative law. I don't believe that's correct - my understanding is if you tear up a road, even one that's closed behind you, you are charged to fix the damage. The rule is to stay put until it dries out, which doesn't usually take long.
Yes you need to carry spares and that is a good lesson from your trip, especially Landcruiser's running and using front diff locks. CV'c and hubs don't seem to last as long
