Tip for you from a 20 year concrete worker: Wet the burlap first. Putting it in dry sucks moisture from the mortar, making it cure faster. The slower it cures, the stronger it'll be. That's why we cover slabs with wet burlap. ;-)
I love your tutorials. You have taught me many awesome tricks to haunt my house. If you are interested, I, I have a tip for you on this project. To help remove the bubbles, do a small thinner batch of concrete and coat the mold first. Then pour in your mixture on top of the thinner layer. That way you will get your details and your strength. Thanks for all the lessons. Keep on creeping on, brother. G
I just watched your skull making tutorial using milk jugs, and followed with this one. Your videos are one of the best I've seen with details... materials, how to actually get started, how to do the squishy stuff, what to look out for and what if it does anyway and then what. Your presentation is excellent - thank you!
I've made some using the plastic skulls as a mold. I made sure to purchase the concrete made for extreme heat. If I could post a photo on here I would. Thanks for the great videos
Try spraying your mold with a light coat of pam cooking spray , I saw this idea on the pathway molds to make for your yard, it makes the concrete easier to release from the mold love your ideas !!
Thanks for the tip! I got on the comments just to see if somebody suggested that lol. I'm going to try to make some of these and I will definitely try it with some cooking spray 💀
Looks awesome and I love the versatility. When I try this, I am going to add styrofoam beads to reduce the weight for skulls to hang on a wall or make a skull tower. Thanks for the great videos!
I've made a product called hypertufa (sp?). Basically add peat moss to the mortar It is very light and behaves like re-bar. Run a slip coat of thin mortar first for the details like Glance302 suggested.
I have been watching quite a few of your videos & I am impressed at how talented you are. I'm not into the horror stuff but I have to say, to actually watch you make these things is fascinating . Thank you for sharing.
A little word of advice since I am in concrete manufacturing, you should prep your plastic molds with release oil though I don't believe you can buy it in small quantities you could try pam cooking spray or I'd be willing to send you a gal of form release which you can use a garden sprayer or a good quality spray bottle to apply.
Love it! In art class we used a water downed soap paste and brushed it on the mold to assist with removal from the mold. For concrete there is a special "bond breaker" chemical they sell to allow it to break nice and clean from the mold. That stuff stinks a bit, and i imagine it's overkill for what your doing. 😉
Hey that's pretty cool idea with the milk jugs and making the skulls and then pouring concrete and making concrete molds that's a really neat idea like the video is really cool
I just love all the sp00ky stuff you make and when I have finished building my cabin/workshop in Scotland I'm going to freak my little sister out (she's not a big UA-cam watcher...she's pretty busy looking after our horses and the woods we inherited. ...I'm gonna tell her I found a fairy/sprite thing and I am going to place some concrete skulls around the path to my cabin...It is going to hilarious
Dear ET. Thanks for your entertaining tutorial. You are great to listen to and i find you sooo funny. Apologies if you are being serious but you defo bring me some smiles. :) :) i was watching a video on a mysterious cruise murder/ mystery one minute then all of a sudden , the next thing i know is im watching you make fantastic artwork. ( one of your subscribers had made a comment on the cruise vid and i found this vid through the channels they subscribe to. Yay!!
I love this! Is there any way to use a technique like this to make your own Lawn Gargoyle? I would dearly love to make my own cement Lawn Gargoyle. Love your channel!
Doesn't much matter for the ones that are just faces, but if you're doing a whole skull you can lighten the weight of it by mixing in styrofoam beans (bean bag filler). Obviously not as strong, but strong enough for decoration, and a good deal lighter.
Thanks and yes, I've see a few dioramas that were awesome. I was thinking of trying to do one in one of those fake pumpkins and like you said, do a graveyard and add perhaps some jackolanterns and scarecrows. Cheers, ET
Amazing just what i needed, to use the skull for the mould, i was useing a cast then re-cast and mother mold then two peace cast........ ect, so simple just use the plastic skull for the mould, mind blown
I have been using the baking spray from rhe Dollar Tree to lube the inside of my cement planters I'm making. Also there are much cheaper and easier mixes to use with less weight for hanging. The finish has a more organic look too. Hypertufa and papercrete are the two I use. You can use these mixes in molds and they can be carved and sanded or any other thing you may want to do to enhance the organic look. For hypertufa I use 1 part portland cement 1 part coconut coir or peat moss 1part perlite. Papercrete is slightly different using 3parts wet paper pulp/mush 1 part builders sand 1 part portland cement. I made head planters and potted them with monkey grass or fern for hair
Oldladytofast- I never heard of any of that stuff but you got my attention with cheaper ;) with 4 kids I wanna do crafts but not spend that much on materials but what I’m getting to is where would I find some of this stuff? Thanks for your time
Holosexual Hot I belong to a Facebook group called Papercrete Crafting Group. The instructions are in the group files and the biggest expense is a bag of Portland Cement , Sand or Perlite, and scrap paper. Cement is around $7 for a huge bag. (Enough to share with a friend.) For hypertufa and papercrete there are tons of tutorials on UA-cam
Take a cue from champagne bottle makers , that little hollowed out area in the bottom of the bottles make them stronger to the pressure of the liquid . Add a wad of paper towels or newspapers to make that hollow . Saves some material and quickens drying too
I think so, just didn't want to mess up the concrete since I didn't know how it would react. With an oily concrete I would be hard to paint. Cheers, ET
Could you cover the outside of your skull with a heavy coat of Vaseline put it in liquid concrete, fill skull with sand, then wait for it to dry to make your own skull casting mold? Love your videos they are very good and get the creative juices flowing.
Hi there, I haven't tried that, but I guess that would work as long as the skull doesn't get stuck in there. If it does, the same thing will happen to the casts...I guess. I'm going to try a plaster mold in a later video. Cheers, ET
OH ... I have a question about the skull milk jug mold. How should I if I want to seal it up to hold liquid. Can you melt the back of the skull jug back together so it won't leak?
You could duck tape it.. use lots of duck tape. Just a small space to add cement. It will be harder to get skull out. You may trash the mold removing it.. place it somewhere where it will get air movement to cure. The full size dollar store skill use it with smaller pour hole..... I would think it would work. But getting it our may make you cuss... lol
Yes, my wife found on clearance at Michael's a few years ago. She was going to upholster some creepy chairs, but never did...so I borrowed it to cover that giant mirror. Cheers, ET
I just happened to find this video, this is a great idea, interest of concrete have you tried spray foam? I have a few cases of them [foam] going to try it, of I over spray I can sand it, thanks for the tutorial...
I'm pretty sure you can. I have not tested it though. I tried to use mortar with little sand in order to make it as smooth as possible. Some of the quickcrete has a ton of gravel and may not come out as smooth, or strong. Cheers, ET
Hi there, I used regular cement (it's mixed with sand). They sell 10 lb bags at home improvement stores. But, you can use any kind really. The one with gravel won't be so smooth though. Cheers, ET
Yes, that one just popped out really easily. I'll be using that mold to make the sconces. Researching how to add a holder for a flameless votive. Thanks! ET

Oh thank you, I should have clarified that I would be using this for a gas fire pit (they would stay in the fire pit for an extended period of time, with varying temperatures). Do you know what the high temperature concrete is called? I was thinking of stopping at Home Depot to see what they recommended. i heard you can take moss put it ina blender, add milk and blend.. Pour over your object and it should grow. I haven't tried but it might be worth trying for your pieces.
Hey man loved this video. I recently learned to make milk jug skulls and thought “could I use them as a concrete mold?” and apparently the answer is YES. How do I do the full head with the dollar store skull as a mold? I’d love to see a video on that and I subscribed so I can keep up with your videos.
I have a lovely cake mole (two pieces) for skulls. I don't want to ruin it for making cakes, Do you think using it with a milk jug would ruin it if I spray it with vegetable oil before I put the milk jug in?
Hey there, I'm not sure if that would work, I haven't tried that, but I wouldn't risk my cake mold. Also, I'm not sure what chemicals milk jug plastic would release if you heat it up. I'd definitely use something more disposable that won't be used around food. Does that make sense? Cheers, ET

Hi I have learned a lot with the things that u make I started making zombie head in serment and the have some weight how much you you charge if u made them to sell them if u need photo of them I will send would like to see has I have no idea what I should charge as I have only started selling but don't want to under charge

Cool, that's a great idea. I'll be trying that on my next concrete skulls!

They sell fire pit skulls for around $100 per skull, I’m going to make yours for next to nothing. Thanks for the tutorial!!!
Thanks!
This is what brought me here!! The over-priced fire pit skulls!
You are AWESOME!!! THANK YOU
I've made some using the plastic skulls as a mold. I made sure to purchase the concrete made for extreme heat. If I could post a photo on here I would. Thanks for the great videos

I'm a Halloween fanatic and plan on making a lot of stuff. Thank you for creating these videos, I can't wait to watch more of them.
Hi there Halloween fanatic! Thanks for watching!!

At the dollar store you can buy some nice silicone spoons and spatulas. They can be washed and reused.
These look great! I like how they look on the lawn! Very spooky!
Thanks!
I have been watching quite a few of your videos & I am impressed at how talented you are. I'm not into the horror stuff but I have to say, to actually watch you make these things is fascinating . Thank you for sharing.
Wow such a great idea! I really want to make a fire pit with skulls around it now. Those would also look cool painted
I'd love to do a fire pit full of skulls too. They sell high heat concrete made for fireplaces. That should work on your fire pit.
cheers,
ET
So did you get in trouble with the wife over her paper towel holder ?!? Lol.
Well, I ended up buying her a new one...but I kept the old one, so I now have a skull holder!
Cheers,
ET
I used to make concrete dog bowls. try spraying a very thin layer of wd-40 in the plastic first. look great .
Cool! Thanks for the tip!
Does concrete have lime in it? Is it safe for having consumables in it ?
A little word of advice since I am in concrete manufacturing, you should prep your plastic molds with release oil though I don't believe you can buy it in small quantities you could try pam cooking spray or I'd be willing to send you a gal of form release which you can use a garden sprayer or a good quality spray bottle to apply.
I just recently saw the firepit skulls and cant wait to make my own!
Thank you for being brilliant!
Love it!

If u spray a little cooking oil spray and wipe away excess it would be easy to remove. Awesome tutorial!
Hey that's pretty cool idea with the milk jugs and making the skulls and then pouring concrete and making concrete molds that's a really neat idea like the video is really cool
You should make silicone molds of the concrete skulls that you just made, that way you will have a mold that you can reuse
Thanks for this tutorial. My kids will love making these
Bonjour...I just found your channel today and I love this tutorial, will be following you for sure...
Thank you!
would love to take this idea and make concrete stepping stones to make a pathway stones or a patio, fire pit. etc
Dear ET. Thanks for your entertaining tutorial. You are great to listen to and i find you sooo funny. Hey man, i love all of your stuff & i've always loved hollween & everything about it. Keek em coming man, ya videos. 😁.
So glad I stumbled onto your site. Just in time for halloween too. Love the tutorials. Thanks for sharing :)
Thanks for the great idea..my family is huge into anything Halloween so we will make these for sure.

Great project ET! Have you ever done small scale dioramas? Imagine how cool a miniature grave yard would be!
Thanks and yes, I've see a few dioramas that were awesome. I was thinking of trying to do one in one of those fake pumpkins and like you said, do a graveyard and add perhaps some jackolanterns and scarecrows.
Cheers,
ET
New subscriber , wow I love your work , great tutorials !
Thanks you!
The skulls look great !
Great ideas. You could add concrete dye to the mortar mix...they have many colors, ie, black, maroon, tan, brown.
Totally awesome video you have some great ideas love to watch your Halloween videos I learn a lot thanks again for sharing
You can make 2 part concrete halves and glue them together when they are done, that way you can gave a rounded skull in the back.
Oooh thank you! I'll have to see if my dollar tree has plastic skulls. That should work great for sugar skulls!
Getting ready to give this a shot, love your videos!
That's so interesting seeing you do cement skulls I'm gonna see about doing one. .😎
Amazing just what i needed, to use the skull for the mould, i was useing a cast then re-cast and mother mold then two peace cast........ ect, so simple just use the plastic skull for the mould, mind blown
Thanks!!
They came out awesome. 👍😀
Thanks!!
perhaps rubbing some vaseline around the inside of the mould before you pour in the concrete will help it release easier :)
I do concrete work for a living use cooking spray to release the molds

Beautiful! Thanks for the video!
Cool. Thanks man! Enjoyable videos.
those are perfect. very nice work!
Thanks!
I wonder if you spray the mold with cooking Pam if the molds would release easier.
I think so, just didn't want to mess up the concrete since I didn't know how it would react. With an oily concrete I would be hard to paint.

I 🖤 that burlap with crows on it did you make that too!!👍

Monster tutorials you never let me down! Im totally make "the pit to hell!" (Fire pit).
Tag me if you do. I’d love to see how it turns out!
Wouldn't coating the inside of the molds with Vaseline make extraction easier?
wondering where maybe to get sheet plastic for doing larger molds like the giant skull at home depot , heat and form it like the milk jug skull ?
OH ... I have a question about the skull milk jug mold. How should I if I want to seal it up to hold liquid. Can you melt the back of the skull jug back together so it won't leak?

May I ask, where did you get that lovely crow burlap?
Yes, my wife found on clearance at Michael's a few years ago. She was going to upholster some creepy chairs, but never did...so I borrowed it to cover that giant mirror.
Cheers,
ET
really did a guuud job mister tnku
you should soak the burlap first, the water will draw the cement to the fibers, and it will make a much stronger bond
Thanks for the tip!!
Can you make the mummified spider? Like the sprite in the shadow box.
Great tutorial
I wonder if you can use several of these in a fire pit for gorey effect?
Love what you do ide like to see you make a rollercoaster frop popsickle sticks that would be epic hope u take this challenge up
If you tap or vibrate the mold, it should take care of the bubbles.
I just happened to find this video, this is a great idea, interest of concrete have you tried spray foam? I have a few cases of them [foam] going to try it, of I over spray I can sand it, thanks for the tutorial...
These look great
Is there something you can spray on the milk jug to make them release easier?
I wonder if you spray the molds with some cooking spray if the skulls will come out easier after they cure?
can you use quikrete instead of mortor mix?
I'm pretty sure you can. I have not tested it though. I tried to use mortar with little sand in order to make it as smooth as possible. Some of the quickcrete has a ton of gravel and may not come out as smooth, or strong.
Cheers,
ET
+Monster Tutorials Thank you I'll let you know how it worked out when I'm done!
i would like to see you make a large creepy spider
If I ever build a stonewall I'm making a bunch of these for accent pieces
make a bunch an put them in the ground before you move out to give the next person a lovely scare lol.
Very interested in anything dealing with werewolves or/and wolfmen
Pumpkins with wierd jagged teeth and head stones for the garden pleeeeease!!
Awesome video
I would really like to see a tutorial on the nun :)
Is it possible to use Vaseline or cooking oil in the mold to help make the concrete not stick so much?
What kind of cement did you use. Where did you buy it
what kind of concrete did you use? i didnt really understand what you said.....sorry
Hi there, I used regular cement (it's mixed with sand). They sell 10 lb bags at home improvement stores. But, you can use any kind really. The one with gravel won't be so smooth though.
Cheers,
ET
Awesome!! so you are able to reuse the one you did the wall skull in?
Yes, that one just popped out really easily. I'll be using that mold to make the sconces. Researching how to add a holder for a flameless votive.
Thanks!
ET
I subbed because I have the exact same skull ring.
Could you use no stick cooking spray as a mold release?
Yes, that would work, but the concrete will be a bit greasy. You'll have to clean the oil off of it.
Cheers,
ET
Can you provide the name of the mortar mix you used? I want to make sure I purchase the right kind. Thank you!
Hi there, I asked for regular cement plus sand mix, for laying rocks or brick. But most mortar mixes would work. Use high temp concrete )for fireplaces) if you want to use these skulls for a fire pit.
Cheers,
ET
Oh thank you, I should have clarified that I would be using this for a gas fire pit (they would stay in the fire pit for an extended period of time, with varying temperatures). Do you know what the high temperature concrete is called? I was thinking of stopping at Home Depot to see what they recommended. Also found Rutland Castable Refractory Cement that sounds like the right stuff. Thoughts?
I wondered about coating them..with vegetable oil..
i heard you can take moss put it ina blender, add milk and blend.. Pour over your object and it should grow. I haven't tried but it might be worth trying for your pieces.
Yes, I read that too. I haven't tried it, but may do a tutorial about it.
Cheers,
ET

lookn forward to it. love you work. thanks

Well Francis nice moustache
would mold release work for the bigger skull?
yes, definitely.
I have a lovely cake mole (two pieces) for skulls. I don't want to ruin it for making cakes, Do you think using it with a milk jug would ruin it if I spray it with vegetable oil before I put the milk jug in?
Hey there,
I'm not sure if that would work, I haven't tried that, but I wouldn't risk my cake mold. Also, I'm not sure what chemicals milk jug plastic would release if you heat it up. I'd definitely use something more disposable that won't be used around food.
Does that make sense?
Cheers,
ET

Jackie Marie sounds like food grade silicone for mold making
Always use a mould release agent
Is it possible to replace the cement with "expanding foam" when using these great milk jug skull forms? Are they any pros or cons? Thanks again ET.
I think you can, I'll have to test that to confirm. And I will let you know.
Cheers,
ET
Are you Cubano?
Would hydorcal work?
It should, yes.
I WILL be making these! Thanks! I "may" add glitter. :)
Hi I have learned a lot with the things that u make I started making zombie head in serment and the have some weight how much you you charge if u made them to sell them if u need photo of them I will send would like to see has I have no idea what I should charge as I have only started selling but don't want to under charge
Spray 'Pam' in the mold beforehand and the mold will release easier.
The bubbles all u have to do is tap the mold a few times to get rid of it
AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE ♥💀♥
LOL. It looks like your dog skeleton was passing ghost gas.
cool. thumb up
Can you make mask tutorials if you haven't already? thanks.
