This one is a great and fresh take for the Undaunted series! Who taught dogfighting could turn out to be this good eh? Well done on an excellent tutorial!
I just found out about (and bought) Undaunted: Normandy. I love how simple the rules are, but how complex the tactics can be. The way they incorporated all of this into a deck builder is brilliant and elegant. I just pre-ordered this one. Thanks for the video!
Just bought this one, just on the box alone without any further info. My brother was excited for once as well to play a game. Although there are a lot of rules to learn before the first round it's a very fun game. We've only scratched the surface of the possible tactics. Thanks for the great tutorial it helped tremendously in understanding the game and how to play it.
I hadn't been that interested in undaunted till recently and I bought both Battle of Britain and Stalingrad because both of those themes appealed to me. I have had no trouble assimilating the rules but I do come from a background of extensive hex and counter wargames so these rules are fairly light in comparison to most of the games i'm used to. I do want to add though that your playthrough and teach was excellent and highlighted some things I hadn't noticed on first read of the game
Huge fan of the series. Have every single title and received my copy of BoB yesterday. It will be interesting to see how the new mechanics work but also it’ll be good to return to a ‘lighter’ undaunted after Stalingrad which (along with this war of mine) is the most challenging game emotionally we’ve played. Choices in that game really mattered. Thanks Paul for another great teach along
Great learning video gentlemen. Just bought this game recently on a trip to the UK (what a great souvernir, right?) Lovely to see how all the basics are covered in your vid. Think I will manage quite allright mechanics wise, since I've played all the other Undaunted games before.
Thanks for another fantastic video on a great series Paul! Would never have thought they would be able to simulate planes moving round on the board but they managed to do it and it works! So cool! Really looking forward to this!
Watched this video after spotting the game at the UK Games Expo - I am an aviation geek so it caught my eye! Great overview and video, thanks Paul. An interesting mix of deckbuilder and board game, I hadn't seen anything like it before. I have heard of the Stalingrad game, I hadn't looked it up (only so many hours in a week to squeeze in YT videos!). A dogfight game without altitude rules seems unusual, but I think it's probably better for it in the end :)
Hi Paul, fantastic video and very insightful. To answer your comment near the end, this is the first undaunted game I’ve heard of and then after a lot of research into the other games, the first one I’ve purchased. I really liked the theme and as I’d recently bought memoir 44 the aircraft added a lot more for me. Once I’d watched a few vids and got my head around the rules I throughly enjoyed it and the pace the game goes at. I should probably say I’m going to be mainly playing it solo but I’ve also been eyeing up some of the other undaunted (I think the North Africa one will be next). I’ve subscribed and will check out some of your other vids.
Great video Paul! I own Undaunted Normandy - love it. I haven’t played the others in the series however after this video I’ve added Battle of Britain to my order list. Thanks as always for your passion for sharing games with the community!
At 52:50 Paul has green 1, green 2 and green leader. I think Paul could've had a better turn if he'd done this: 1. Attack and then move (e.g. one hex) with green 2 2. Move one hex and then attack with green 1 3. Inspire green 1 to attack and then move one hex This way, Paul gets off three attacks instead of two. I haven't thought deeply about the final placements of the pieces, but minimizing movement seems okay here. On their next turns they're flexibly placed for either shoot-then-move or move-then-shoot, depending on what the opposing Luftwaffe planes do.
Just pre-ordered. First played Undaunted last autumn and instantly bought everything, its soooo good. A wargame that I actually enjoy that is also enjoyed by my wargaming friends.
Thanks Paul and Paul! Looks so much fun. I have the Normandy with Reinforcements as i have only played it solo. Such a clever game. Curious to see if a solo mode will be done for Battle of Britain!
I can play NORMANDY solo as the missions are fairly cut and dried and common sense can be used on each side. This however, looks like you can really get into some deception and trickery so might be tough to solo. We'll see, maybe I can fool myself!😊 Dont have the reinforcements solo rules BTW. Tough to find that expansion now!
This was my first exposure to an Undaunted game series. Looks well thought out and the only tiny issue I could see was with the Boulton Paul Defiant aircraft having the same attack strength as regular fighters. That doesn't detract from the game play though.
Really intrigued by this line of games. This video was the first experience I’ve had with them. I’ll need to look into them further and decide if they’re something I would like.
I've looked a few times but never grokked the system so never jumped in. It's brilliant. Started getting the set. It's simple, elegant and gives you that proper tactical wargame feel without all the rules overhead. They are also very reasonably priced. Pull the trigger you won't regret it.
I've always live streamed and done other videos in 50fps. I'm not sure it makes much difference to anyone watching, but I prefer the higher frame rate myself a little. It isn't much extra effort for me.
At 29:00: as far as I can make out there are no wifi symbols on the plane-token cards, therefore Paul does not take a discord card. If there had been wifi symbols he would have taken one-but he could've played his two cards in the opposite order to avoid the discord card. Does that match everyone else's understanding of the rules?
Great tutorial and playthrough. I'm looking forward to this coming out, any idea when it is getting released? I will be breaking my moratorium on games purchases for this. I wondered how the movement was going to work. I had wondered if the planes had to move every turn, regardless of card play, this system seems to work very well.
Noticed that occasionally when bidding for initiative with a "comms" card if your units are out of comms you should take a discord card then and not just when doing an action with a comms card. Towards the end there were a couple of initiative bids but no discord card was taken.
@@GamingRulesVideos Good play through by the way, enjoyed the vid. Just played Scenario 1 & 2 at the weekend - David and Trevor have knocked it out of the park yet again!
I am a massive fan of Undaunted and have all the existing games and expansions apart from this one! Hoping to check it out in person at UKGE later this year...
Great tutorial! I am not sure but I think that RAF combat counters start each scenario in the out-of-action state (flipped), which for them means grounded. Not sure why it was not done during this set up. That's the only way for the RAF airplanes to be out-of-action as they cannot be targeted by any anti-air strike. Any reason for that?
Once you've taken 3 hits on a plane and lost 3 cards that plane can never move again it is then literally neutralised and is a sitting duck until it takes a 4th hit and is removed. Would it not be better to remove the plane as neutralised after the 3rd hit?
If two maneuvers f.e. are allowed, can I combine one maneuver with an attack? For example, "2 moves forward, than 1 maneuver to left and than attack"? Or either manover(s) or attack? Thx :)
It's been a while since I've played, but I think the rules are that you MUST perform the MOVE on the card, and you also get to perform ONE other action. a great playthrough, i'm really interested in picking this up. i do have one rules question, when playing section comms for their initiative, it has the comms symbol under the initiative value. does that mean it follows a similar rule to the other comms abilities where you have to take discord if they're out of comms? as is the case at 1:01:45
You are correct. I covered this in the rules, but I forgot to do it when I actually did it. I did mention it later on as something that I think I forgot to do earlier. Good spot!

@@GamingRulesVideos ok, so maneuver is unique and lets you split the actions? I suppose that, thematically, it is all viewed as “movement”. This game looks like so much fun. Waiting on my copy to arrive today.
It's a cool adaptation of the system to dog-fighting. But what does "bolster" even represent in this case? A plane is not a squad that you can just add soldiers to. I do like that once a plane is removed, it will not come back.
I think you played bad the tailing case… for tailing you must be on the 6 of the other planes not just behind… you gave you far too much advantage and lost all the advantage of a really good position in following the enemy… the 1 plus dice is there to emulate the fact that it is far easier to shoot something that is not on divergent course, since you are on the six of the other, you have more time to score a hit than just in passing or being at angles that are far more difficult shot.
No offense, the point was just that is is very rewarding to put some time and manoeuvre to achieve a ‘on your 6’ position since it gave a tremendous advantage, and all the game you took this advantage just in being on some place at the rear and your plane was not even facing the tail of the enemy one…it is far more difficult in a game to have the plus 1 die than it seems and the game would have been probably longer… But me too I made goofs, I didn’t realize that movement was mandatory, for me in the rule we could go anywhere from 0 speed to X and didn’t realize that it is on,y manoeuvre that is optional… but I think that 0 speed is good all things being relative speed not real one, it is not as if you go at 0mph but just that your break your speed until stalling to get back in position and not being in front of the other one on the next turn… this I really must verify… And I wasn’t not aware that when you attack before moving, since movement 0 to x seem mandatory, I thought the move it was forfeited if you attack before moving, another thing that I must verify… These thought not to point erroneous play, just to highlight that if the game seem rather simple to learn, the mastery of it is really real… One nice fact that your demo did was highlight the Going dark option by example to not having a discord card if you are out of comme range at this time… and again the tradoff is very brutal, losing a real good card or having one more discord…
Finally my bad, in checking the rules and re reading the 2th bullet of the engagement rules, I realized that it would be far easier to say that if you are in the 3 hexes behind the center line of the enemy going away, you are good to have the bonus of shooting from behind, they are really must not in that case in the rulebook say nothing about tailing the other craft, tailing is being right behind it not in part behind it… That saying I think I will make me some house rules to have better realism : 1) if you are out of the sun, you get +1 die, I can simulate simply in trowing a 6 die at the beginning of the engagement to simulate day lighting… 1 day I equal 2 hours and putting a sun marker on the map, 2) if you are head on with an enemy, you are stressed, so attacker will have minus 1 die and the opponent has a reaction snap shoot so he can at the same time shoot 1 die in reaction, 3) I you are not in the line of the enemy fire, you got a normal shot, unless, you are in position behind, and finally if you are exactly on his 6, you get 1 more bonus dice because you are focus and have more time to align your shot… I fear that in wanting to do it simply some of these added house rules could be incorporate in some advanced rules… wargaming have often basic rules and then new advanced ones to get nearer and more tactical. For the aces, I ll add this house rule, either they could manoeuver before moving, or and here it is the modification, the ability to move, manoeuvre once, and then attack with one less die, adding all the other preceding bonuses… aces are often not only being able to maneuver highly but also to have best shooting reaction… With all these house rules, I think that we are going to accès an all new level of tactical play… and this game is so awesome.
Your opponent's excitment during play is infectous
Cos it's a really exciting game!

And I wasn’t not aware that when you attack before moving, since movement 0 to x seem mandatory, I thought the move it was forfeited if you attack before moving, another thing that I must verify…
These thought not to point erroneous play, just to highlight that if the game seem rather simple to learn, the mastery of it is really real…
One nice fact that your demo did was highlight the Going dark option by example to not having a discord card if you are out of comme range at this time… and again the tradoff is very brutal, losing a real good card or having one more discord…

I fear that in wanting to do it simply some of these added house rules could be incorporate in some advanced rules… wargaming have often basic rules and then new advanced ones to get nearer and more tactical.
For the aces, I ll add this house rule, either they could manoeuver before moving, or and here it is the modification, the ability to move, manoeuvre once, and then attack with one less die, adding all the other preceding bonuses… aces are often not only being able to maneuver highly but also to have best shooting reaction…
With all these house rules, I think that we are going to accès an all new level of tactical play… and this game is so awesome.
Ah my poor wallet opening by itself again
That box art is incredibly cringy.
Very cringy. Which one is the German pilot?
