I use that W&N Transparent Yellow with a CMY palette including their Aqua Green and Permanent Rose. It's stunning. I don't have the Da Vinci but intend to get some soon. People say it's their favorite. Would also like to see it compared with Roman Szmal!
My favorite is QoR's version but that W&N is very nice, too! The DaVinci is interesting - I could see it on a landscape palette for the texture.
I've been using the Schmincke Transparent Yellow (PY150) for 2 years now, I think. It's really similar to Winsor & Newton. I think you could use them interchangeable. All I can say is that I tried the Daniel Smith one and I don't like it... it's not as smooth and clean looking as the other 2 that I tried.
I had the dot card from Daniel Smith but I would definitely stay away from that Nickel Azo Yellow. I think I expected more "brilliance" in the PY150 from Daniel Smith since it's more expensive.
I think most brands has PY150 in their range. Kimberly Crick has a video about different PY150 on her Channel. I think it is quite helpful.
Oh ok. That's good to hear about the Schmincke. I definitely prefer the smooth and clean W&N PY150.
i have the DS version and don't like it as much as i'd thought i would. in masstone it looks.. kind of like a dull olivey sienna if that makes any sense. find myself never reaching for it. this vid is making me think perhaps i should just try another brand.
Absolutely love the Daniel Smith version, it has such a rich saturation of pigment! And I'm partial to the Da Vinci version as well 😍 I do agree though the Windsor and Newton is bright, smooth and clean. All of them are gorgeous honestly. Another great comparison vid! 😁
Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I like the Daniel Smith too but, as you say, the bright, smooth and clean W&N wins for me.
I love my Winsor Newton transparent yellow. It’s my go-to yellow.
I have quite a few brands of PY150 Nickle Azo Yellow. It's one of my most favorite yellows for mixing. As I watched you swatch I thought you had made an error with the Winsor & Newton permanent yellow so I got out my swatch chart to check and sure enough my Transparent Yellow is made with PY97. I knew I had several tubes that were included in a large estate set that I had purchased from Ebay around 15 years ago. I looked through my stash and found that I indeed have 3 and a half 5ml tubes of Transparent Yellow but one of them is made with PY150. It's such a different color that I'm wondering why they started using this pigment instead of the PY97. I'm glad they did because I like it much better than the Hansa Yellow Medium PY97 version. Both are nice colors though. So I have now included a half pan of the PY150 version into my set.
I do not have the Daniel Smith version. It's my favorite of the ones you swatched so I will be picking up a tube in the near future.
I very much enjoy your videos and your soothing voice. I would have never discovered this had it not been for watching this particular video.
Very nice comparison of PY150, it's a great and versatile yellow.
Thank you 🙏
I love the Winsor & Newton version of this hue as well. Oddly enough, however, I keep Winsor & Newton New Gamboge, a mix of PY150 & PR209, as the main yellow on my palette. It sits somewhere between a pure Nickle Azo Yellow and Quinacridone Gold, and I love the greens that it makes with PB15:6, PG7, PG36 or PBk31. As an added bonus, it's one of the Winsor & Newton colors that is great in either the Cotman or Professional version. As always, I love these comparisons and reviews!
Thank you 🙏 A few people have mentioned to me that they like the W&N New Gamboge. Like you, they have said that the Cotman version is good too. I'll have to give it a try sometime.
I love that New Gamboge too! Good reminder!
Great comparison and agree, the W&N version is definitely my favourite of these four. And I was thinking that it looks cleaner just moments before you said that. Thank you.
Thank you. Yes there is something nice about how clean the W&N looks.
PY150 is very versatile. Rembrand is the best version for me.
They all look great. DS is very pigmented so I use less but with DaVinci in this particular pigment (I really like DaVinci) the gradation is more difficult. But yes in my palette Azo yellow and Nickel Azo yellow are my staples with the ochres. Thank you Jay.
I have the Da Vinci (recommended by Kim Crick). Trying to learn how to use it.
Nickel Azo Yellow is my favorite yellow. My favorite is Da Vinci
I agree with you about the W&N.
Gorgeous color. The Daniel Smith would make wonderful fall leaves. I like the Windor and Newton because it's clean and Daniel Smith because of the character. Does remind me of Quin Gold. Tough choice.
I'm actually leaning towards the Rembrandt because i do a lot of dry brushing and it seems easier to get a light yellow without too much water. Or perhaps Schminke
Py150 is my favorite yellow, I prefer the da vinci and daniel smith as it has a much broader range. You can water it down to a bright yellow and deepen it to brown. You cannot get that range from winsor and newton or sennelier in my experience. White nights also has a py150 called indian yellow and it is actually one of my favorites.
The most vibrant PY150
i have tried yet is Mijello from the Gold Class line
I haven't tried that one yet but hopefully will in the future ☺️
Wow you're making me add a lot of things to my wishlist! You're right the W&N is really nice.

@@JayNathanWatercolor Heh!! As if I don't have enough Nickel Azo already, it's my favorite yellow. Have you gotten a chance to use it in painting yet? It's so wonderful.
Really appreciate you doing this particular comparison. This Nickel Azo Yellow is my favorite yellow. I have two DS tubes for now but in the future I will probably switch to Da Vinci 37ml tube.
You're welcome 🙂 I guess you'd save a lot of money by switching to Da Vinci 😂
The Da Vinci is so beautiful. It looks like it has a bit of a texture.
It is nice isn't it? I really like all the Da Vinci watercolors I've tried.
@@JayNathanWatercolor I’m not sure, I’ve seen some swatching videos and they don’t seem up to the level of the other professional paints. Some paints looked either weird or weak to me.
I'll vote for the Da Vinci version because that's the one I have. 😂 I like them all though. Lovely color.
DS py150 is one of my main yellows (DS quin gold hue is the other). I don't know what happened to my self-poured half pans, but for some reason my DS py150 is sparkly if you hold the paper at a certain angle.
I have the Qor version, the Daniel Smith and Schmincke. I like the Qor for its color I don’t have the Winsor newton but I think Qor is closest to it, very clean and transparent.
I wish Qor wasn't so expensive 😔 I really want to try them.
I like the QoR version, too. It really glows in the washes!
nice comparison! I have the Rembrandt, Mijello and Roman Szmal versions of the pigment, although most of the time I just use quin gold, even as my only yellow. I also love how clean W&N looks in the swatch ^_^ I am currently working on a horror piece that features a cloaked figure in yellow and py150 is perfect for adding that otherworldly and attractive glow. Maybe it's a weird combination but I like pairing py150 with moonglow a lot, in my head it's like they were meant to be together, haha. How do you use py150? I'm not very experienced with landscape but I find it mixes great greens.
Yes, love it with indanthrone blue, which is a combination I learned from Denise Soden.
Yeah I really only use it for mixing greens. I'll have to try the PY150 and moonglow combination ☺️
@@JayNathanWatercolor this mix is definitely not for everyone XD I usually lay a wash of py150 and put moonglow next to it so that they slightly touch. Moonglow tends to invade the wash and i let it do its thing. It usually separates with most of the red showing in the area that they touch. Meanwhile the yellow travels in the moonglow wash bit by bit. It's a weird and beautiful thing to watch haha
I love daniel smith nicker azo yellow it make lovely quinacridone gold hue I really wanna try po49 real quin gold but to hard to find
Yes it's not easy to find and can be a bit pricey if you do find it.
To me they look almost exactly the same, much closer in hue that most other watercolours where there is a lot of variety within a single pigment.
I have a Dan Smith dot card, and the Nickel Azo Yellow that I swatched out looks so much more like a cool greenish yellow than the brownish quin gold sort of color that you're getting here. Weird.
i think i only have rembrandt’s py150. but i’ve tried a few from other brands and dont really find any drastic differences that affect how i use it. then again i dont really use warm yellows to begin with 😅🤣
That's true. Swatching them out side by side and comparing them is one thing. How they actually behave in mixes and in an actual painting is something completely different. I'm sure there isn't that much difference between them and that they all give similarly, great results.
Why is that daniel smiths nickel azo yellow had a glitters?.... I buy a 5ml tube in a local art store here in the philippines but when i swatched it, ive seen a tiny glitters on it..... Is that natural?
I don't know. I've only got a half pan that a subscriber sent to me and I can't see any glitter in it. Maybe take it back to the art store and ask them what they think?
OH MY GOD. FINALLY. I purchased a tube of py150 around 2017 (did you buy it from DESartroom?) and I was surprised to see it sparkling. I looked up other people who swatched it or did py150 comparisons and nobody mentioned DS py150 being sparkly. I thought maybe the brush I used to swatch my DS amethyst contaminated it somehow, but the py150 (same tube) I poured in a studio palette also has that same effect.
I mean, it doesn't bother me and you can only see it when you hold the paper at certain angles or close to light, but I've been really curious about it.
Yes, my DS PY150 also has a bit of a sparkle. It is a color that GLOWS and the DS version at least is a bit pushy…creates interesting effects. It is a fabulous mixer and I’ve been a bit freaked by the PO 48 discontinuation because multiple convenience greens that are regulars on my palette use both PY 150 and PO 48 (i.e., they use the quin gold hue plus a green). I’ve stocked up on the PO 48 paints and honestly, I have this fear that suddenly PY 150 will go extinct next. This is what the pandemic has done to me! First I had to collect toilet paper, and now I have to stock up on key paints lol. I wish DaVinci would do 37 ml tubes of it, although I have at least 3 tubes of DV paint only 3 years old where a seam has separated and leaked. So…for long time “survivalist” style pigment collecting, I may stick with Daniel Smith and Winsor Newton.
