When I was kid mowing lawns with a reel mower was all we had. Reel mowers mow a beautiful lawn it looks groomed like a golf course. Golf courses use reel mowers.
Another benefit to reel mowing not often mentioned is that sheering a blade of grass (vs tearing it it the speed of a rotary) is less stressful to the plant i.e., more healthy for your lawn as well.
@@TheNeighborDominator Actually, I don't. I have such an Abundant Overgrowth of English Ivy, I really need to get a goat. And, really, the only reason to have a lawn, is so we can _pretend_ we are rich, and have Lots of Sheep!!
This mower sounds like a good solution for a new home owner. Appreciate the video. I feel I could go a few months with this product and save for the more expensive unit down the road. I could easily flip this mower to one of my neighbors since it does a good job.
It helps to have a nice lawn. My lawn looks like it has five varieties of grass. Some sections are greener, grass blades are wider, some are finer…a real hodge podge.
I love my Sun Joe reel mower. Works great brand new. I’ve moved on to a Greensmaster 1000. The cut is way better. Don’t hit any rocks or pebbles that things done.
Great video! It’s a great way to dip your toes into electric reel mowing. Some tips for the long haul… 1) buy a metal file for your first reel bend (for me it was hitting the ground at a low spot). 2) use fluid film before each use, it will cut the noise down a lot. 3) add the DIY front roller if you’re going to mow at 0.6”, otherwise it’s a real pain. 4) backlap as needed, this blade doesn’t hold an edge super long Otherwise I love this little machine!
@@TheNeighborDominator absolutely agree that it’s the better value! Punching above it’s class. Their warranty is also really good, they’re sending me a new unit when they’re back in stock for the bent reel (they don’t offer a replacement reel only)
SunJoe beat me to it. I always wanted to but an electric motor on one of my manual reel mowers. They all already had striping kits on them. Oh well I will stay poor lol. Nice machine and review bro.
That waviness (marcelling) can be avoided by keeping you blades sharp and changing the direction of your cut every time. Beautiful lawn you have there!
This might be the perfect solution for me. I have about 9k sf of back yard and was considering building a small putting green maybe 4 to 500sf. I didn’t want to spend a lot in case I didn’t like it or it was too much trouble.
Yeah, if you're doing a putting green (even a small one) I can assure you that this mower will not cut low enough for that. Plus I doubt that this has a roller available for it which is very nice to have when maintaining a putting green. Just my two cents!
Good day, I would like to ask you if you could look at the exact values of the electric motor, watts, and revolutions on the spindle mower from the video. I want to order one too, but there are many of them in the offer, thank you Peter
@@TheNeighborDominator Good day, I don't want the whole spindle mower, only data about the engine that drives it. I'm making my own spindle mower and I want to fit it with a 24 volt motor on the Ali Express, there are a lot of them, so I wanted more precise data from the motor nameplate. Thanks Peter.
I'll stick to the Fiskars reel mower. its manual but also great blade speed 18" blade and about the same price. Also, 1-4 in adjustment but can easily be modded for .5 inch as well. Also, if your getting your clipings are too much your probably trimming too much off. Just cut the grass 2-3 times a week.
@@dragon6ft5 you could. But you would just be dulling your blades for what, a millimeter or two of gras? Not to mention it still takes time. I sometimes gut mine 3 times a week. Just depends on how fast its growing. Every situation is different. Alternatively you can run over the clippings and often chops the smaller which with help them to drop through the grass canopy. As they decompose they will add nutrients to the lawn while not being an eyesore.
This may or may not be a problem depending if you buy one for exercise or speed. Dominator go back and count how many laps back and forth doing the job. At 15" that's a pretty small cut, lotta up and backs. So count the number of laps to do the job. Laps x number of yard feet will give you a distance walked. You probably walked a mile doing that cut.
This is exactly my thoughts. I got that Ego Select Cut and I love it, but if I can get into the reel mowing market at a reasonable price without going the manual route, this seems perfect.
I don't care about noise where I live. I do like the electric option given where gas prices are. My question is whether there is a qualitative difference between how this mower performs versus a propeller-blade mower. Does it do a better job and make the lawn look better than a traditional mower?
It does cut better but this is not a mulcher and it cuts the lawn lower than your normal propeller blade. It is not as durable at all. If you hit a stick or rock the reel and bedknife will have issues.
Great video.. i probably need to scan the yard for any mulch chips that sometimes end up on the yard before I cut. Do the blades seem easy to bend from chips?
The problem with battery mowers if your grass is thick or tall, it's going to drain your battery even more. I tried a battery mower and it came with 2 batteries. With corner lot in the city, still didn't finish it. Next day took mower back and got a gas one.
For sure. I hear ya on that. When reel mowing though you are suppose to only take the tips off. This thing lasted pretty long. As far as a rotary, i could definitely see that happeneing.
Spent 3500 on a bad boy for my last house. It only mows to 1.5 but sure what to do grass are is about 10k but I’ve got 1.3 acres to maintain. Hate to go spend 2500 on a reel mower..
That is a lot to reel mow. If I had the 10k I would just keep only the front low or the back not both. That would be so much to walk behind with my leg problem! I'd probably get a triplex🤣
When mowing you are to only remove 1/3 of the grass blade. When reel mowing short you are basically just taking the tips off to maintain a healthy lawn and not stress out the plant
I know reel mowers don't mulch cut, but I was wondering a few things: 1) how would the lawn look at 2 inches (I cut mine tall with a rotary mulching blade) at a fairly high cut and 2) how would the grass look if you didn't use a grass catcher (but mowed every 7 days)? I hate to toss grass clippings since I fertilize and you're throwing away fertilizer.
I loved my old manual reel mower until i put out fertilizer. Then it was too thick to push. This might be the answer. I really dislike the way the rotary mower leaves the swirly scalps. I only have about 8000 sq ft of really thick bermuda. I'll probably go ahead and buy an extra battery...maybe two extra batteries.
