  • The KEY to Making Your Lawn Look Like a Golf Course is Mowing it with a REEL MOWER.
In this video, I cover the type of mower that is needed for this aesthetic and the company that just opened up shop here in the midwest.
The mower im using today is a Tru Cut Reel Mower. Throughout the last 4 years I have spent my time testing many different reel mowers including the toro greensmaster 1000 , Mclane Reel mower , swardman , and the allett reel mower . But NONE of them have been a good fit for me.
The Tru Cut Reel mower is the newest addition to my fleet of lawn mowers. A few things I like after a few days of testing is the all metal construction. Many residential reel mowers are made with an excessive amount of plastic parts. The tru cut is built like a TANK.
I will keep you up to date on a full review of this mower in the coming months.

😉 Thank you for the contact information for a local Tru Cut... I'm not in the Chicago area. I'm in Quad City area, little town of Aledo, IL. I'll be getting ahold of them. I don't know if they can help me, I have a True Cut, well kind of... I have a Starlite - True Cut... The original before it was actually just True Cut, an aerospace company, Who originally designed it from my research, and as far as I can guess mine is about a 1965 model, 21" 3hp Briggs... I don't think they make a 21" anymore well as far as I am aware. Not much has changed over the years. I bought mine used for only $30, it's old and has a lot of petina, and missing some guards, but some fresh gas and only 3 pulls and it fired right up and mowed the yard. Not bad for a 60-year-old mower. I will try to contact the company here local and see if they can point me in some right directions to possibly getting it service and possibly finding some old new stock or whatever for guards because I would really love to restore it to original ondition as it is wonderful mower. It isn't good on my tall grass, as I'm gonna have to get my grass used to being cut short, lol, but It's an awesome mower.

Craft? He makes random videos with extremely little information and clickbait thumbnails and titles, that's not craft. Recommending a horrible mower and saying it will make your yard look like a golf course, WORST THING IVE EVER HEARD. It's not the mower that makes the turf or golf course that's why golf courses around the world use all different brands and models, this goes for one of the best courses ever, Augusta National. They have changed brands countless times through the years and even a handful of times in last decades but the turf always looks the same. It the maintenance practices we perform weekly, we also mow turf far shorter, some cutting no higher than .300 on tees, greens and fairways. We aerate, deep tine aerate, spike aerate, groom, verticut and topdress lightly all the time. We have a regular routine for chemical applications from fungicides, fertilizer, soil amendments for micro and macronutrients, PGRs, wetting agents, pre and post herbicides for certain times of years and several others. Our root zone mix/soils allow for us to have extremely deep roots, keeping dry firm conditions without needing to water but once per week unless we need to hand water during the heat. We also know sometimes its better to just hand pull weeds, not weeds per say but native grass like poa, but anything growing where it doesn't below is a weed by definition. These are just some of the things that make golf courses what they are not just a single mower brand. Lawns are far easier to take care of because you guys mow at higher heights

I’m in the South and own a 27” TruCut and absolutely love the way this machine cuts. It’s built like a tank and sits on the grass, no sliding, fishtailing etc and lays down a wicked cut everytime. Get the grooved roller it makes a huge difference. Strips like a dream and at a reasonable price.

Back in the late 60s we used a Jacobson and a Toro reel mower to cut the greens at the golf course. We sharpened those once a week by using clay grit with oil and a back lapping attachment. These were 2 cycle mowers. Cut the green by making 2 perimeter circle cuts and then divided down the middle and cut a straight line back and forth until finished. Looked fantastic.

I had a 25” Tru-Cut and the Brigs engine and the carb setup was a piece of junk and it was a constant battle that wasn’t worth fighting. Hopefully the engines are better now… I only bought it to dip my toe in on reel mowing. Got it sharp, used it for about 4 months, but for me it was so unreliable that I honestly preferred my manual Fiskars while I was waiting for my Allett Stirling. Sold the Tru-Cut for $200 and told the buyer bluntly that they should only buy it if they are planning to replace the engine and carb.
A few recommendations with the Stirling… awesome machine (battery lasts pretty much all day and I’m pretty sure I have not once killed the battery yet). I would skip the brush and I’m not nearly as sold on the verticut cartridge as I expected.
I prefer to use the Stirling with the front rake removed, and if you want to double cut diamonds, removing the rake is a must or the mower will zig-zag with every stripe it crosses. Since I scarify before every mow, I noticed no advantage to using the front comb anyway. That scarifier is so gentle and effective that it’s kind of crazy how beneficial that one cartridge is!
My attachment purchase order for the Stirling would be as follows:
    1) Tine scarifier (This is just as important, or possibly more important than the actual mowing cartridge in my book… I literally use my scarifier cartridge more than the mowing cartridge)
    2) Dethatcher (often called a scarifier in the states)… seldom needed, but extremely beneficial when it is if thatch is present.
    3) Verticutter… I could very easily do without this cartridge. I’m honestly not sure if there is any notice difference on Rye and the bag is pretty much empty. The blades might be too dull (the are 100% blunt) or it might not spin fast enough, but I’m not sure if much is happening there.
I would not but the brush or aerator cartridge at all because both are pointless.
The brush is junk and lots of bristles are in the bag every time I used it and the scarifier does about the same thing but much better than the brush. For worm castings I’d grab the scarifier… in terms of gentleness, I think the scarifier is likely more gentle and it removes a lot more debris. I got the brush w/ leveling in mind, but I don’t plan to use it for anything else and I likely won’t even use it for leveling.
When it comes to the aerator, I don’t own it, but I think it’s pretty obvious by the design that the aeration cartridge doesn’t really do anything and I would argue the added traffic alone would likely do more harm than good. Far more aeration can be achieved with the dethatch cartridge and obviously a core aerator is 100x better also. Might offer some benefit on greens, but I’m doubtful.
Even though it’s expensive, I’m loving my Stirling.

    • @DiffEQ
      @DiffEQ Рік тому +1

You got it. Overpriced mower that is poorly designed and the weight of the reel is their only selling point. Well, how are you going to sharpen it? Shipping prices are through the roof and this mower is going to cost you $3,000 or more depending where you live.
Made in the USA is a tired lie when it comes to quality or longevity. It does mean you're going to pay through the teeth, though. That's why Americans don't actually buy American.

    • @IntegrityDistribution
      @IntegrityDistribution Рік тому

Toro is near world leading (and clearly market leading in the USA in this exact space for professional day in and day out users) and John Deer is typically second runner up for golf courses and sports turf (also dominantly USA made in this exact space). That’s the #1 & #2 brand…
There are some products the USA does make very well (computer software, furniture, appliances, buildings, guns, industrial & commercial application, etc.) but most American households simply aren’t willing to pay for quality brands on more expensive purchases so Europe or USA products often aren’t even considered.
I agree that 100% blind, I’d often pick a European product over an American brand dollar for dollar but I’m not even sure that this would be the case 50% of the time, so I don’t agree that American made equals crap and I would even consider USA made junk to be the rare exception rather than the rule and this Tru-cut looks like it’s made improvements since my super old POS motor on mine. USA labor is expensive which means if a manufacturer isn’t producing quality than generally they will be out of business sooner than later… in terms of lower priced goods like Tru-Cut or Cal-Trimmer an American brand often isn’t a competitive value and those are the brands that generally struggle.
In my pockets… my high end pen is USA made in Texas and I’m unlikely to ever buy a pocket knife that isn’t made in Oregon (Benchmade w/ Axis lock). My favorite and most reliable gun is USA made and my iPhone I’m writing this on was accomplished primarily of USA mind. I think USA engineers are top notch so even China made stuff is quite good when designed here… our fruits & grains tastes better… many of our cars & planes are competitive (exe: Tesla & Boing). I don’t really understand your perspective here except with a handful of lower end American brands… I was just saying that my ancient Tru-Cut was a lemon, but my Stirling (UK) is pretty amazing. Stirling is on the EGO battery platform which I would assume was engineered in the USA… the EGO battery might be made in China, but if the battery were engineered in China I think my mower probably would have caught on fire by now! We must be seeing different USA brands because I generally disagree.

Anyway they were a lot more compact back then, basically they were just a little deeper than the engines, with the engines sitting right on top of the reel. These things you use are like seeing cars from the seventies nick-named boats. I wouldn't get these until they start making compact ones again like before.

Great vid as always George. Tru-Cut seems to have a nice operation and very convenient to be somewhat locally accessible to you. Whenever anyone asks me what brand of reel mower to get I always say whichever company has the most quality , local and accessible service availability in your area. From experience if that is not the case it can become quite the annoyance. I have a somewhat older Allett Kensington i inherited from grandfather as they moved out of here / NJ to Florida most of the year now . Not had too many issues with my Allett , but have gone through multiple companies who service them and usually not very helpful / responsive , not too reasonably priced and often not the quickest turnover which can be frustrating when needing equipment back.
A friend of mine in a fairly high up job in turf management at a local golf course helps me out at the moment. But not an ideal long term situation. Anyone in the market for a good reel mower , make sure there are quality reputable service companies for that brand in your area.

I was handed down my mower rather than buy it but buying one now i would of course make sure the build quality and features are what I needed / wanted. But I would also do my research to make sure quality service companies were in my area for whichever brands i was interested in.

Thanks for the great video. Appreciate the factory tour-and I absolutely love American manufacturing and the old-school solidness of products! I’ve been seriously considering a California Trimmer but the Tru Cut sure seems nice, especially the dual-clutch system. Your thoughts on the Tru Cut vs Cali Trimmer? I’d like to visit Tru Cut…but it’s 8 1/2 hours (one way) from here. I called them and shipping adds $150, plus $75 for residential, plus $95 for a lift gate. And they (the very nice lady who answered the phone) have no way to look up any dealers that may be nearby. She said they’re mainly a factory-direct sales company. Great looking mower but the costs are really adding up.

This is my 3rd season. Had to change the drive v belt and the turtle/rabbit control switch is acting up on me sometimes but I still like it, lite weight and easy to maneuver around obstacles in the yard. So far i only had to backlap it to sharpen the reel at that is very simple to do. Allett is still selling the liberty and the cheaper gas models but they did increase the prices a few hundred bucks.

Nice review on the machine. I wish it would stripe . I wonder if you could rig up a Big League roller on the back. I have a Swardman that stripes great but is hard to use as if the grass gets too tall it doesn't cut unless you take the front roller off and put on the tall grass wheels, which don't roll very well. I usually get my time master out and mow with that, then use the Swardman the next day. My schedule doesn't work to mow every other day very often.

I agree with cost on the new Alletts. That's crazy. But as for the Liberty 43 battery one, I love mine and it was about the $2500 you paid. Very expensive to be sure, but it's been solid for me. It doesn't have that plastic switch that broke on your gas version though so I can't speak to that. I'm 6'4" and the 43 has never been a hunching machine for me, so that isn't an issue I've experienced. TruCut is definitely cheap in comparison, so if you can't afford Allett I can understand that. I will say even with a front roller you're not going to get those stripes - you need a big back drum to lay down the grass and stripe. The front roller is just so you're not scalping.

As a kid in the 70's in PA, I remember a lot of reel-type mowers. It was obvious even to a kid that the grass was cut better with such mowers. I even remember using my grandpa's PUSH style reel mower! Then I started seeing more and more of the flat blade mowers - I presume they became the home standard due to lower cost. In my young teens I started golfing and observed nothing but reel-type mowers on golf courses. Seems to me it's obvious why golf courses use them - better results on the grass.

I'd also like to see that reel mower come with a roller attachment on the back to make the grass lie down in a uniform fashion to make my grass look strongly striped. Though I wonder if any amount of rollers, weights, and other doo-dads would make my bermuda grass look good.
