One of the things that makes an IT person valuable is knowing boundaries of one's ability and knowing how to reach out and use those soft skills to get the help needed. Excellent job!

I’m currently working on this with a client. I’m glad my instincts was to call QBs for the database server management portion. Thanks bro

Good story. Just helped a client with this. Luckily I had a history with QB. It was like pulling a wet blanket off him, he was so happy. Thanks for sharing.

I need to do exactly this with my small company haha.
Taking the QB that is running on a local pc with the same scenario, BUT we do have a synology 1821+ server. I'm looking forward to understanding this, especially for external access into the server. I got as far as locally seeing the VM and it's files on another laptop, but that was all I had time for.
This video helps me in that I KNOW it's possible to do.

I enjoyed it! I do customer service/tech support for Quickbooks and I always get people who are AMAZED when I do something like set up the QB Database Server manager or solve an error. "How did you do that?! What did you do?!?!" Bruh I just know do this, do that and it works. I don't know why!

Well I’m trying to do the same and can open the file with both computers through a shared public folder but the second computer doesn’t see any information entered but the host computer

Can we use pCloud to store our Quickbooks files to be able to allow multi-users to access the same company file?

I would never trust personal private company data to a third party cloud service. One pw hack and that file belongs to everyone

Mildly interesting. Was looking for more like the DETAILS of how you made it all work.

The point of this video is to describe the process of getting it to work. The first step is calling Quickbooks tech support. Every system is going to have different configurations and there’s going to be the possibility of hundreds of minor issues that need to be worked out. They know their software. Call them

@@Maniac536 I guess. But you really didn't "describe the process of getting it to work"... you just told a story about that time, in band camp, when you got QB to work when someone else couldn't. That's not actually describing the process of getting it to work. That would be: "First I did x, then y, then z, then 1, then 2, then 3." Anyone can just call QB support and ask questions.

I'm a bit unclear on this. I have a similar situation. We have QB on 1 PC and need a second user in the office to access the databases from a 2nd PC. You mentioned setting up on a server, but then it sounded like you were able to share the databases from the original PC without the server. That would be most convenient for me. Is that what you eventually configured? Just 1 more PC and no 3rd QB installation on a server? This would be great because moving all the workbooks for the companies we manage would be tedious. Also you have to find and copy the receipt scanned image files separately. I don't want to move the files if I can help it.

The final process required no server. We had 2 pcs with full legit Quickbook licenses installed on them using Windows 7’s file sharing. Not saying how it was done (you would have to pay me for that)

QB customer service is pretty great! Do you know anything about getting it set up on QBox? I'm trying to get access to our Contractor Pro desktop version, but it's not within the same office. I am a couple towns away from the main computer....

If memory serves a full Quickbooks license for a PC was around $475 US but don’t quote me on that

lol I am having the same issue too but for some reason I can't have multiple users to be set up from an external drive as i get an error message on quickbooks when I try to do that. Then I call quickbooks to see if there is any wayto do it without a server and they flat out told me they don't support the older version of quickbooks the client was using but they keep insisting... They don't have a server and the only way i can see them doing it is to remote access a server with quickbooks on it if they want to be so cheap.

Just look it up online. It's actually extremely easy to securely share a folder with the QB database in Windows. You can then make it a mapped drive once the folder is shared...ie: "Q Drive". This is all very easy to do with little research and without paying someone. Just make sure you have a license for each person needing access to the database and select multi-user in the drop down menu when each additional users sign on. I've seen up to 5 users at once doing this without issue and without needing a server.
