  • Brenda wraps up her showcase on the CBC. The song was one of Johnny Carson's favorites. Bette Midler sang it for him on the penultimate Tonight Show. Lyrics below
Words & Music by Irving Kahal (Lyrics) & Sammy Fain (Music), 1938
    I'll be seeing you,
In all the old, familiar places,
That this heart of mine embraces,
    All day through.
    In that small café,
    The park across the way,
    The children's carousel,
    The chestnut tree,
    and the wishing well.
    I'll be seeing you,
    In every lovely, summer's day,
And everything that's light and gay,
I'll always think of you that way,
I'll find you in the morning sun,
And when the night is new,
I'll be looking at the moon,
    But I'll be seeing you
Show aired 2/23/1962 with Bert Niosi conducting the CBC orchestra. The snap at 2:58 features Tony Moon on guitar and Joe Watkins on saxophone.
Song was a hit for Bing Crosby in 1944.

    The story behind the song:
Irving Kahal & Sammy Fain were a popular songwriting team in the 20s and 30s. Their big hits included "Let a Smile Be Your Umbrella" (1928) and "Wedding Bells Are Breaking Up That Old Gang of Mine" (1929) - In my head, I can hear Brenda Lee rockin' "Wedding Bells". Perfect fit for her! "I'll Be Seeing You", on the other hand, was not a hit when released in 1938. It was written for a Broadway Musical called "Right This Way". The play closed after fifteen performances, so the song was not heard by very many people. However, a few years later in 1944, it was used in a movie of the same name starring Ginger Rogers and Joseph Cotten. Luanne Hogan (1919-2006) sang it for the movie soundtrack, but it was Bing Crosby's recording that went to number 1. A big reason for it's success was that it was now wartime and the lyric resonated with all families who had members far away. On a sad note, Irving Kahal died in 1942 at the age of 38. He didn't live to see the success of "I'll Be Seeing You".

The movie "I'll Be Seeing You" besides starring Ginger Rodgers and Joseph Cotton also cast Shirley Temple, then 16 yrs old, in her first more mature adolescent role. I don't think either Ginger or Shirley had a song or dance number in the picture,, but I haven't actually seen it.

She recorded it in October 1961. This performance is February '62 and it was also released on the album "Sincerely, Brenda Lee" in February '62 which you can still buy on CD. Her singing still holds up 60 years later!

The song was written before the war, but became popular when people longed to see their soldiers far away.

Brenda Lee and the spoken word:
Brenda first heard someone speak in the middle of a song in the mid-fifties. It was an old time group, "The Ink Spots", who sparked her interest in the technique which is called "recitation" by singers. She liked the idea, but never used it until "I'm Sorry" in 1960. Soon recitations became a frequent and even an expected feature of a Brenda Lee ballad. It is a bit of a paradox that people bought the records and paid to see her shows to hear a great singer, but also wanted to hear her heartfelt recitations as we observe in the second verse of this song.

Your embarrassed up-loader misspelled the High School in the second slide. Rather than issue a GM type recall of the video, a software patch was applied. Update: YT eliminated the "patch" when they deleted all annotations. I have now blurred the mistakes on the second slide.

And then there were 250 live performances a year, numerous television appearances on four continents, personal appearances charity work etc etc. Right up to the last Super Bowl where her recording was heard during a Victoria's
      Secret ad.

I can't believe you're airing this without painting a mask over her mouth. Her childhood rockabilly tunes were masked from the radio waves when I grewup. She was just a familiar name of someone who only sang dull 60's POP songs even after rock came back to the radio waves in 1963. I had no idea until the internet and iPhone

Maybe her voice changed so that she could no longer sing those rockabilly voice infections when she grew up.
