"The little girl with the big voice."
Brenda Lee was only 15-years old when she sang this classic ballad. Just to see her self confidence on the stage and hear her incredible depth of feeling and amazing voice at this young age still makes me shake my head in disbelief. No girl singers today have this kind of technique, their voices are all thin and contrived. When will we ever see her like again??

Great performance! She's been singing since age 11. She had good people managing her career, to keep her from drugs, alcohol etc.: Her mother, Red Foley, Owen Bradley; good support from her record company (treated her like a friend/family, not as a product. Brenda doesn't work as much these days, but stays busy with family and friends, hold bible studies at her home every Wednesday, and does a lot of other activities. I met her a number of years ago---a truly wonderful, kind person.

Thank you for this great performance! "All Alone Am I" charted at #3 on the Hot 100, #1 Adult Contemporary and #7 on the UK Singles Chart, and remains one of Brenda Lee's most enduring and beautiful songs. "All Alone Am I" started out as a Greek song entitled "Μην τον ρωτάς τον ουρανό", was re-written, and English lyrics were composed, but much of the haunting melody was used from the original. It is certainly one of my favorite Brenda Lee songs, and this is a fantastic rendition on the Sullivan show!

    • @MostlyBrenda
      @MostlyBrenda 3 роки тому +10

It was more or less unnoticed at the time, but some of BL's big hits were European songs with new English lyrics. "I Want To Be Wanted" was the Italian "Per Tutta la Vita" from the San Remo song contest in 1959. English lyrics by Kim Gannon. "Losing You" was a French tune with English lyrics by Carl Sigman. "All Alone Am I" is by the famous Greek composer Manos Hadjidakis for the film known as "Island of Brave" (1959) in English. Originally recorded in Greek by Tzeni (Jenny) Karezi. Legend has it that Hadjidakis was late getting to work on the assignment and went to Karezi's home and more or less composed the tune on the spot on her piano. English lyrics by Arthur Altman.

I remember Brenda Lee, very well. She was called “Little Miss Dynamite”.
She was singing, professionally, since she was 7 years old. Her father was killed in an industrial accident; and little Brenda became the breadwinner of her family at age 10 !!
She was very little, and never grew past 4 foot 9 inches, tall !!
Brenda Lee was about 17 years old, when this song, “All Alone Am I”, topped the charts.
She was only 15 years old, when her “smash hit” song, “I’m Sorry”, topped the charts.
She had about four dozen hit songs. I was only four years younger than her; and can’t remember a time, when one of her hits weren’t on the radio. Only, Elvis Presley had more hits, playing on the radio, in the 50’s and 60’s.

Very nice, she was about 15 in this recording and started professionally when she was 12. She also did many hits in the fifties. Another song of interest " I'm Sorry".

God what an actress. So much empathy in her voice. When I'd hear her sing on the radio when I was real young I would stop everything and just listen to her sing

Another remote show, this one from the Miami Beach Convention Hall. The solid, understated instrumental backing allows the maturing Brenda Lee to showcase her vocal mastery. I can't point to another video clip that shows her talent better.

Doris Day, Connie Francis & Brenda Lee, all Legends in their own right. There are no female singers like them today & they need machines to keep them in tune.

a beautiful Greek song from the 50's that was first sung in an old Greek movie in 1959 and was written by Manos Hatzidakis. One of the best performances was that of Brenda Lee.

In 1959, the great Greek actress, Tzeni Karezi, recorded for the soundtrack of the film ‘Το Νησί των Γενναίων’ (The Island of the Brave) a sweet melancholic song titled ‘Μην τον ρωτάς τον ουρανό’ (Don’t ask the sky), composed by Manos Hadjidakis. Three years later, in 1962, the popular American singer Brenda Lee performed the song in English, this time titled ‘All Alone Am I’

I can't wait to hear her rendition! Had many of her original 45's from the late 1950's to early 1960's! Plus the stereo albums on Decca Records out of Nashville, TN. A true American living legend for the whole world to enjoy, Ms. Brenda Lee!

Change the dress and the tempo she is right up there with Adel or any other top singer today...for that time I would say the best pop female singer...I am 71 and the melody and words just popped into my head...I asked Google and found this great original video of Brenda singing...what a great time to be alive.
