Hahah. I was about to get mad at you for chipping up good reusable hardwood boards. I decided to watch the video instead :) Great job at reusing and recycling what wasn't reusable!
We replaced our roof a few years ago - and to save the nearly $1000 dumping fee, I put the old cedar shakes that were removed from the roof through the chipper. Then I used them in the back garden area - it was a lot of work to sift through the material and take out nails and any other garbage, but it was worth it to me.
Thats awesome! Hard work is rewarding in many ways.
Could have helped people in need with those but you chose to help yourself instead. Selfish.

As a truck driver from the US during these dark times, you sir always seem to cheer me up! I genuinely respect everything you do and how you are so connected with nature, so much so that my goal in life is buying some acres of land and do what it is you do. I've had you running on my phone in 39 or so states passing around the channel. Take care and ty for putting my mind at least at ease (early 30s recently suffering from high levels of anxiety) which has been difficult otherwise.
It's going to rot in a landfill and concentrate any chemicals. I think it's better to break down right on the property. I agree with the idea of using it only on the trees for the reasons you mentioned. Good job!

Gr8 idea to reuse decking boards that are too far gone to use for other projects. We bought a hansa chipper after watching your previous video trialing it. We couldn't be happier and much better making mulch than numerous trips to rubbish dump!

I've found feeding very hard materials and very soft materials into the shredder simultaneously gets very good results. The soft stuff bulks out the hard stuff, taking a bit of pressure of the motor, and the hard stuff provides a solid cutting surface against which the shredder blades can get a better chop for the soft, stringy stuff.

The name of the chipper (Hansa) is the name of a beer here in South Africa. Thank goodness you only uploaded this today, as our bottle stores only opened up yesterday after 5 months of alcohol and tobacco bans XD. Cheers to you and the family :)
I'm always on the look out for tree surgeons working close by, they're always happy to dump off their wood chips for free, saves them time and expense.

After years of wanting to own a Hansa Chipper a look at your video convinced me to buy one. I purchased the Hansa 13 and reckon it's the bee's knees. (So does the neighbour who borrowed it.)
BTW, we now have 20 Birdies 1.2 x 2.5 metre raised garden beds - 12 are the high sided models and 8 are the low sided - and plan to add 4 more highs.
I don’t remember ever seeing the food forest corner of your garden before. I know we’ve seen your orchard area plenty of times but I don’t recognize the area where you show your sons helping to spread mulch. I definitely want to see more of it!
And I only have a small garden but now I really want a wood chipper lol

Cool seeing that turkey. I read once that the Australian Brush Turkey builds a compost pile out of brush, leaves, moss, etc, so that it is 3' high and 5' across. Then the female digs a hole in the middle of the pile and lays her eggs in that hole. The decomposing compost then takes over the job of incubating the eggs, and the hen can be off doing other things.
I love to watch your videos, Mark. As a student who's renting a single room in a house I've got a small urban compost going in my front garden, but that's the extent of my gardening ventures so far. I can't wait to take what I've learned from your videos and apply them to my own garden when I get my own property. From someone in the UK it's so peculiar to hear you say that Spring begins in September! I'm hoping lots of videos on this channel will get me through the wind and rain we'll have here over the next few months.

Excellent stuff love your videos. Just starting out on our self sufficient Journey and been thinking about getting a chipper.
I bought a chinese made chipper advertise to be able to chip up to 120mm branches. I discovered that it would do that with some shock to the machine when the big and heavy end of the branch makes contact with the blades. However I also learnt that feeding the larger branches in with the small diameter end in first is self regulating. The branch will have less weight as the larger end hits the blades and bounces back a little to give the machine a breather. These machines are great to have. As important to me as the lawn mower.
I'm all for reusing what we've got so I see no problem as long as your wood isn't pressure treated :) I actually love this because people redo their decks fairly frequently and I'm sure at least some of them haven't considered using the scraps for garden mulch :) So thanks for the suggestion! Well done. We have redone our fences (treated pine) but all the posts and rails were hardwood. They were in fairly good nick after a sand so they have been repurposed into rails for our beds (and the palings were given away). Any upcycling and re-use of old materials is a very responsible approach. By all means, wood chip away!
Looking at the comments below, this seems to be a very hot topic. I'm glad you recycled . I'm sure that there are more things more dangerous than "possible" pollution on old boards. The moisture that the tree gets to use from the mulch structure will prove to be the most benefit to the environment all around. Mother Nature has done a fine job of adapting from man's onslaught of gardening.

Good work, you could also turn it into biochar too. Even treated timber can make up 10% of a biochar batch with no issue allegedly.
I just got a small load of free chip from the council who were trimming branches on my street, pretty happy with that.

Decking oil often contains pesticide and anti-rot additives.
If that chipper is based on a blade design those nails are really shortening its useful life. At the old pallet factory we used a heavy low speed toothed augur crusher, followed by a high speed hammer mill. (and a magnetic tipped conveyor at the end to remove nails.) The system produced large splinters rather than cut chips. Most of it went to either hog fuel at a power plant or used as filler in strand board. That hammer mill had an electric motor that must have weighted close to a ton, it took about a minute to come up to speed and then 5 minutes after cutting the power to slow down.

There's a gang of 15-20 turkeys living in my woods; usually two or three strutting toms in the spring. A couple of years ago I had chipped up a pile of cedar four or five feet high. Went back about a month later to get a bucket load and the turkeys had spread it out all over to a depth of three or four inches! And to think, Ben Franklin wanted them to be our national bird.

Good man, I reuse my wood decking for various bits as it's replaced and when they have finished repairing stuff or are too buggered to repair anything.. Chipper for you matey. As long as I don't use tanalised timber I know the mycelium in soil will handle any residual chemicals. I'm pretty sure I would have noticed by now since it's well over a decade since I started doing it and perennial crops have only improved over time due to the massive layer of mulch.

Hey Mark. I heard after mulching palm fronds, its always better to mulch a few hard branches off a fruit tree or any tree to clean the blades back up.

I see you have a Brinsea Maxi EX. I have 14 duck eggs in mine as we speak. It will handle your hot summers Mark. My Mini Advance hummed along unperturbed by the hot days here in Monto, while the previous incubator did a nasty slow-cook on my developing eggs. Usually 80-100% hatch rate. Brilliant piece of gear.
I must say, I'm getting closer and closer to buying one of the small Hansa chippers.
Chipping green palm fronds first on the soil then the hardwood gives the tree plenty of nutrients and helps feed the microbes to break down the mulch.
Where I live most decks are salt treated 5/4 boards and they have arsenic in them , so not a good idea. But we have a chipper also and all the small trees and all the brush and leaves go in the garden.

Sounds like you've got you head around the issues that would concern someone about using old decking for mulch. Good plan (avoiding the vegetables, just in case) and I hope works well for you.
I checked with the csiro on treated pine and apparently the leaching of arsenic/copper etc is in such low quantities it's not considered a hazard, even when used for veggie patches such as yours. Probably not good spread on your cornflakes every day but hey. There's far worse sprayed on the stuff you get in the supermarkets.

Hi. The only issue I could think about is any chemical treatment the timber could have had before going back into the animal areas ect. But am sure it's fine anyway. Another good video sir 👌

Recycling timber great idea, too many people just order a skip and chuck it, but as for the remaining timber I guess the only thing I would have say is I would of done the same but instead we just left the timber lying around in heaps, because we had no time to deal with it. Purphaps not so surprisingly this has attracted so much wildlife, e.g. we now have a home for hedgehogs, frogs, and mice living of the insects and grubs, which are all helping to breakdown the timber. I've seen birds hopping into and out like the little Wren. Even wasps like wood to build for their nest, and wood boring insect do their job too no dout. Our log pile is the remains of 18 Leylandii Trees and their root stumps, which I dug out. We stuck them on top of what was once, we think, a site of fruit cage. Which has now become over grown with Bramble and over prickly fruits like Raspberry, Yes it looks unsightly, and yes one of our neighbours has made a comment. But this has saved on buying such an expensive mulching machine, and all the servicing you spoke about! and saved a heap of money! But I guess some people just don't like unsightly piles of timber!
You could make some great looking furniture ie Book Case,coffee table etc.For inside with those boards. Sanded and oiled that timber would look schmick and wouldn't rot outside in the rain.

Some countries have banned CCA treated wood for people complaining in comment section. Wood preserving products containing arsenic and chromium were banned from sale from 1 September 2006 in the UK.
In Australia 2004, "the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Chemical Authority (APVMA) advised that CCA must not to be used in Australia for high-contact structures such as
garden furniture, picnic tables, exterior seating, children's play equipment, patio and domestic decking, and handrails."
"from July 2012, CCA was declared a restricted chemical product, from APVMA - "It cannot be used on high-contact timber structures: this includes garden furniture, picnic tables, exterior seating, children's play equipment, patio and domestic decking, and handrails."
So from 2004 in AUS it was advised not to use CCA on domestic decking, from 2012 it was banned. Just check what your governments laws are if you're worried.
Do you happen to know if that applies to the US also?
CCA copper chrome arsenate will only penetrate sapwood not heartwood. Most Aussie hardwoods will only have superficial chemical residues that will leach out in conditions exposed to water. Treated pine should never be recycled due to the high penetration of CCA into the sapwood

In New Zealand hardwood isn't treated so I would have thought it was untreated in Australia so I would be happy to put it on my garden.
Well if you consider what’s in the stuff we buy at the store, I would say your mulch is going to work great to top dress. The chemicals would break down over time but being it’s a hard wood it will take a nice long time to decompose. I wouldn’t use treated lumber and I even try not to use too much pine and saw dust in my compost but hard wood I really like.

that turkey is a fantastic garden guest, how lucky you are. Please do more videos about your adorable ducks. The one about purchasing "Mum and Dad" is one of my favourite videos, not just because of the ducks, but I loved seeing the countryside during your trip to get them and I also like the videos with lots of rain, when it rains heavily here (not often the last three years), we really like it, it is very relaxing in a funny way, but mainly we are just pleased for the parched fields and forests around us.
