It's all your fault... Started watching your channel about 2 months ago. I tore apart my back deck and built my first raised bed. It gets worse. The plants started growing and 2 more raised beds appeared. Another week later 2 more. Fast forward to now and I'm up to 8 beds and tons of 5gallon buckets. I'm hooked and soon my yard will disappear. Thanks for the inspiration, love your show.
I would love to have these raised beds, but being on Social Security pinches the old budget too tight. However, I was driving past a local tree nursery, and I found 4 HUGE black planters that trees come in, and they hadn't been cut to remove the delivered trees. I got permission to take them, and with a little hügelkultur learned from you, I have created 4 raised beds. I am looking for more of the big planters to be put out to increase my garden size. In the meantime, I am also using the big horse feed tubs from a friend as smaller planters. I just drill holes in the bottom, do a much smaller version of hügelkultur , and voila! I can plant herbs and greens! Thank you Mark, you make it look...well, not easy, but POSSIBLE. Love from Texas!
I use tyres from places that sell and change tyres. They are happy to get rid of them (coz they don't have to pay for disposal). Only thing is that, if you ever dismantle the garden, they can't go into your normal rubbish collection or council clean up (In Australia). Tractor tyres are the best for a higher raised bed but some car tyres are quite fat with quite big holes nowadays.
Leave the gap man! I have 1 bed that is closed off on 3 sides and I have to go around to get in it. I won't change it bc I have tall trellises on 2 sides and an arc on 1 end. Its only 1 and I can deal with it, but you may kick yourself for making it difficult to get to from all sides.
Agreed. Also, leave more space for string trimming between the ones that are butted up. Or make them more flush together. The way they are, not room for paths, but grass can sure grow.
Hello! You cracked me up when you said loudly "HELLO", I laughed so hard that my husband and kids turned to look at me! LOL Anyway, I would not put the larger garden beds flush up against the row next to it. I would leave space to be able to weed eat down between the beds and walk space to fully be able to plant that larger bed from both sides. But you know best! Your garden is what I dream mine will one day be and look like.
Your channel means a lot to me. When I was too disabled to barely move during treatments your channel gave me encouragement to even just plant one thing. Thank you.
9:45 Kevin from Epic Gardening also delivers to Canada. I have 4 green Birdies ordered in January, 2 already set up and have some brassica seedlings in. 2 more to assemble, it's not difficult, and I'm a small woman! Hubby offered to help but didn't need muscle, just a bit of time and patience. Still having frost here so no rush to transplant the peppers/tomatoes/tomatillos/zucchini/cukes just yet.
“HELLO” Bahaha 🤣 too funny! Mark you’re awesome!!! I live in zone 2ish-3 so i’ll never get to grow what you grow outside so I build a greenhouse so I can try what you try my friend! Love love love this channel! A walk way gap would be the most efficient for tending the weeds. Worried that if you butted them up against each other that it might create perfect homes for a little critters to build nests. Just saying. But it’s your garden I’m sure it will look gorgeous however you do it!
Hey Mark, just want to say you inspired me to start my own self sufficient garden and by being a biology student it helps a lot in learning a bunch of cool stuff about botany . Thanks a lot and also greetings from Romania!
Defiantly leave a gap on those bigger beds + that reminded me of the worlds strongest man contest, when they used to stand in an old car a walk with it, lol
I've got four of those beds in the garage, and more on the way. They'll go it after the underground irrigation system is installed. I'll have drip irrigation at each bed.
Makes me wonder does your partner call you crazy when you do this, mine does whenever I add massively to the garden lol Although she loves the food we are now starting to produce. Can't wait for the planting videos for the new beds.
How about, for the skinny ones sticking out, building them two together, i.e. skip an end on two and bolt their sides together to make two 4.5ish meter long beds? They already have the bracing for it... How about using bits of various kits to make L, H, or T shaped beds to fit available space?
I love watching what you're doing as your garden progresses. Many people are still learning to focus on the long term. I've been doing hugelkultur and lasagna gardening in my raised beds for a while now. The new beds I've been working on are in-ground hugelkultur and spirals made with stone from my garden space. My goal is to have a thriving food forest to leave to my daughter 15-29 years from now.
Been recommending your channel! Great stuff! And has become a bit of compulsory bedtime viewing when hubby and I go to bed! We have an acre so planning on filling it up as much as possible with fruit trees and veggie gardens. Great advice you have and given us some good ideas! Thanks!
I like a little bit of space around those larger beds you have there. Thanks for sharing! I definitely want raised bed and these look very durable and easy to put together.
Hi Mark, just wanted to say thank you soooo much for sharing all of your knowledge with us!! My boyfriend and I found your channel the other night and can’t stop watching. About to start our own veggie garden and compost.
Looks fabulous. I'm very happy for you and your family. Looks like a lot of work, but... It looks like so much fun. I would love working out in the garden practically all day and listening to the wild birds. Love your channel. Congratulations Mark.
Thanks Mark. Love your videos. Love Birdies. Your advice helped me decide to invest in Birdies beds and I'm glad I did. Top quality and they look great.
You're right about building momentum & keeping it going! That's why "multitasking" really doesn't work well for most people! Our brains work better when focusing on 1 thing at a time!
Wow! You still have a lot of work to fill those up! Looks great though. Can’t wait to see what you do with those. Will look forward to the upcoming vids.
Nice work Mark, Always leave a path between beds for access. I love your videos and your obvious enthusiasm. In Sacramento CA we are now harvesting tomatoes, zucchini , squash and peppers. Love your channel.
Mark, thank you for the great explanations in all of your videos. I have never been one to check UA-cam in anticipation of new videos from a creator (I’ve always looked at UA-cam as a way to kill time). But I check regularly to see if you have a new video. Have had my two birdie 2.3m x 0.5m wide garden beds for 3 weeks now. First time veggie grower and absolutely loving it. My 3 year old daughter loves trying the herbs straight from the patch. Love your videos! Keep up the good work
Hello Mark, I have been watching your channel for about 2 months, and you inspired me to start a small vegetable garden bed in my balcony. I live with my wife in an apartment in Toronto - Canada, and I am trying to plant a few variety of local vegetables from seeds and some from a nursery. Thank you for the tips and I really like your videos. See you! 🙂👍
I have followed your advice and have purchased Birdies raised garden beds for my Horticulture class at school. My yr9s managed to put the kits together and my yr10 class managed to put them in place and fill them ready for planting a day before Vic went into 'lockdown' this past week....looking forward to getting them planted...
Love ur vids mark! Been watching u for 2 years! U and James and Kevin from epic gardening inspired me to start gardening 2 years ago love ur vids guys. And mark ur jokes never get old lol
This is perfect timing, thanks! I'm fitting mine in with my wooden ones today. I was surprised how lightweight they were (the shorter ones). I put them together indoors while it was raining all day yesterday and it was easy to carry them outside.
Small gap makes sense to me. You're going to want access to that side sometime in the future and leaning over is too much of a strain on back and shoulders.
Well Done!! I really like these Raised Beds!!! We are trying the Huglekulture Method for the first time & so far, really happy with the results!! Thank you!
After tuning into your channel for the last few months I asked my hubby to make me a small raised garden to put on our deck. He just installed it yesterday and I planted my first seeds of spinach. Also I'm adding coriander and parsley. Thank you for inspiring me! PS I'm in Tassie😊🇦🇺🥰
Well you sold me on these birdies raised beds. Well done you old pongo. I'll let you know how the senior service gets on as a first time gardener a little bit down the track. Great videos, I am learning a lot.
I liked the way they were setting before you moved them into the other raised beds. The space between them seemed extremely efficient and workable if you used any type of equipment and could lend itself to another future expansion.
I recently bought some Birdies garden beds for tree planters for my yard, and I found the hardest part about putting them together was opening the boxes they came in! I was already prepared for the high quality of the garden beds, but the high quality of the boxes they came in sure surprised me. My Christmas and other events decorations will be getting repacked and stored in Birdies boxes from now on.
An Aussie in Israel loves the honest way you put things together..no fuss or hype and no electronic music with shades of plastic Hollywood production. What you see is what you get.
Mark, I just love you and your videos. You're such a hard worker, maybe you need to get yourself an epic farm hand, like Kevin... you need your own Jacques!! Regarding the bigger beds I think leaving a gap is a good idea. Thanks for another great video!!
Hi from NZ. You are such a dag! 😂 You remind me of the 10 years I spent in QLD. I've just taken delivery of 4 raised beds to replace wooden ones that are falling apart and have the same issue - how to dismantle the old ones and replace with the new ones. Bought 2 large tall beds here in the US. Top quality and simple to assemble. You can see the high quality materials and design when you get one. I plan to buy many more.
We use the galvanized steel window wells sold at Lowe's as our raised garden beds / compost piles. We plan on getting more. We have 5 right now and fill them with the soiled bedding from our Embden geese, 🐓🐔 and 🇬🇳 fowl pens. We are eastern Idaho and planting season starts on about the first of June. In May we can always assume that we have one more frost. Happened more than once. We will have herb and vegetable window pots this winter in each of our windows.
Hi Mark l would leave a gap between the garden beds. I give you credit your a bloody hard worker! I hv spent the past 2 days and will again today with lockdown in Victoria, so good mentally and physically! Cant wait to get some Birdies raised beds!
Oh your poor back! Yes, leave space between, or you could have the same problem of other beds and not be able to reach all parts easily, plus you wouldn’t have to back up and go around to get in and out of garden (my thought!). Thanks for the chuckles when watching how clever you were to move them around! Oh your poor back. Would love to see your process of filling them up, too. Big thanks for the excellent video you provide. So well thought out for best viewing for us. The time lapse gives us the ability to watch as you work, without slowing you down. Bonus! My yard is disappearing too. My spouse is so happy 😆
Haha ... epic 😎👍
Yep!! Us too. We added some grow bags to the mix.
It always starts small and then next thing you know you're chewing on hay and sitting on a rocking chair.
I can see it happening to me, 😂😆
A gap! Walkway/through way on both sides makes everything accessible.
Also allows you to plant things on the edge that need space to grow out, like broccoli
Mark doesn’t want to grow more, he just wants to mow less. It’s just good CSM strategic planning.
“Whoops hello” that was hilarious look look on your face🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I read your comment at the same time he said it lol what a coincidence.

Give it a slight gap. When structures are touching it just creates more potential for wear. Plus you retain the option of tending from any side.
Learned that the hard way! Haha!
