      Generally that's a bit exaggerated
Not many are really willing to go to that extent just to track you down and hurt you cause of the effort. At the end of the day it's still mostly normal people behind the network plus probably buying some stuff or browsing.
Surprisingly there's still a ton of normal websites in the deep web but otherwise still be cautious cause it won't hurt plus don't do anything illegal.

The darknet / Tor is very addictive, be warned! Once you get reading those forums like Dread (the link on Wikipedia is actually real!) where criminals openly discuss their crimes and drama is just round the corner of every click, it's easy to get hooked. General advice: trust no one and learn PGP, it's a must if you want to know what's legit and what's not. Scammers are everywhere. Have fun!

There are a few interesting sites I always return to, like the Black Hat Chat, or the Imperial Library to download books. In general for those who think it’s scary, it certainly isn’t. Most people you meet in these chatrooms are either IT People, a lot, of trolling, edgy kids, seriously a lot of annoying kiddos, and people selling roids or offering small hacking jobs, most of these aren’t legit though, occasionally you meet people coming there to end their lifes, helped out a few of them whenever I could. I would say that using a VPN with tor does have one use. Running an exit node. Your connection will be used for some shady shit, and there have been many a story of people having authority's rocking up to the door of people that run them. This is because some super illegal shit was done with their exit node connection. A VPN with port forwarding enabled to let the exit node run through would mean they don't come knocking.
You obviously want to use a VPN that has already proven itself in court to not have logs, making it a dead end on an actual investigation, like PIA or ExpressVPN.

For us plebs, we get the iron boot. But as long as you are not running an exit node, and just running a relay, you will be fine.
DON'T RUN AN EXIT NODE UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!

No log by audit = These guys we payed to look at our stuff say it is cool. (Another layer of "shift of trust")
Getting a VPN is a shift of trust from ISP to VPN. An audited VPN shifts trust from the VPN to the Audit Company.
No log by court = trust me, here is concrete proof we literally have no logs.
The power of the state itself failed to get any logs. Whether that is via court, or a raid by the alphabet boys.
There is another trick as well you can do as a cherry on top. Check to see if any investigations were hampered by an ISP's network layout that is available in your area.
This is because some ISP's use CGNAT, (carrier grade network address translation). This basically means that multiple users are on the same IP address at the same time.
Since we have run out of IPV 4 addresses, this is becoming more commonplace, however, you mainly find it on mobile networks.
It would take a pretty onerous judge to give out a warrant to raid multiple peoples homes, sharing an IP just because that's just how the Network does things. They would need more proof to narrow down the exact user.

Would it not just be an extra layer of security to use a VPN and Tor together? I mean I understand from what you said why you don't NEED to, but is there any security risk posed for doing so or would it just simply be 0 added benefit?

    • @chasenom5880
      @chasenom5880 Рік тому +2

Yes. Technically it would be an extra level of security. Like OP said in video the anonymity of Tor and encryption provided is far greater than that of a VPN. I believe the Tor browser even has an additional VPN option with it. That being said encryption can be decrypted and, like you said, it’s not going to hurt anything having an additional level of security or protection.
When big hacks occur and the FBI or agencies try and trace them they find the hacker has multiple VPNs making it extremely difficult to trace to the actual source. They pass through one VPN only to find another and so on and so forth. So you could make the argument for them like ‘well there’s no reason to use a second VPN if you already have one’… well what happens if someone gets past that level of encryption.
So in general, yes it would just be extra security. How necessary is it? It just depends what you’re doing I suppose.

    • @dbdvdvbhddbdbb

Tails has a good way to store bookmarks and other data by using persistent storage. Since Tails can run off of a USB memory card without having a hard drive in the system, it does not store any data in the operating system. The persistent storage on the memory card is password protected, so, even if someone were to have your tails system, booting it up would just show a sterile system and not the persistent storage.
You have the choice of using tor to browse the web without unlocking your persistent storage on boot-up. This is good for browsing sites that migh be sketchy by not allowing an attacker to potentially gain access. When it comes time to use a dark web service such as proton mail via the dark web, the persistent storage can be unlocked to display the dark web address of the saved bookmark.
