    Hey, love the bench ❤
    .. the lamp is maybe not quite there. Maybe sand it a bit, so it gets a bit smoother surface and doesn’t look so much like a diy?
    Love your videos 🤗

    Just an FYI for future projects. I know celluclay (sp) is great, I've used it. It's great but expensive. Next time break up paper egg cartons ( made from the same stuff as celluclay ) soak it in a bowl or bucket with hot water till soft, takes only a minute or so, use immersion blender to mix till a good smooth consistency to work with. Smoosh out any extra water with a towel lined colander. You can add bleach during the soaking process if you want it lighter. I also add a little white glue because I like it a bit sticky for applying on slick surfaces. Can be stored for quite awhile in an airtight container too. You'll save lots of money!😊

      Yes this!! We did this for 4H and it works so well. and you can egg cartons for free by asking in your local FB group. people have tons they are trying to get rid of.

    The thing about the bench though, the sides are slatted too, I think that looks nicer. This is like a whole chunk on the sides. Which is fine but IMO the original looks nicer because of that detail. If I’m not wrong, Tina Le had done some kind of variation on this bench (similar) for an entry way some time ago

    • @rogers873
      @rogers873 3 місяці тому +30

      I came to look for this comment! I wish the sides were slatted so much. This method would've used less wood and make it lighter as well!

      It wouldn't be hard to adapt this basic pattern to slated sides. It would be lighter, too.

    I feel like the pendant should be a little bit more asymmetrical because it still looks like an army helmet to me. Also would a thin layer of drywall atop of the paper work for the texture. Love the bench immensely.

    • @ikkeisikke
      @ikkeisikke 3 години тому

      I actually think that she could have shaped it a little more asymmetric when it was still wet. The bump was actually making it better.

    Let's normalize the difference of opinions when it comes to design. Personally, I really like the bench & think it'll be a great addition to the apartment makeover. The lamp shade not so much. Even for the DIY price, I think that's way touch to spend on it. But, design is subjective, so if others like it, that's awesome. I hope Nina loves all her DIY pieces & her apartment makeover in general.
    Ps....I am a 24 hour TSG viewer. Been watching this channel for many years. I enjoy everything, even if it's my style preference. Doesn't matter.

    I am always fascinated by why those slat benches are so expensive. They are pretty but they are so simple. Yours turned out perfect. It looks just as high end as the pictures.
    I love the cloud lamp. When it comes to drying, let it dry between layers. Moisture can get trapped and it can cause mold to form. Then let it dry for like a week at least so it can shrink. Glue and water don’t have enough preservative to avoid mold.

  • @beaatpeace2490
    @beaatpeace2490 3 місяці тому +34

    Pendant shade - Maybe chicken wire, polyfil, paper mache? Or just multi layers of paper mache? Not sure paper mache would stick/stay stuck to polyfil lol I love chicken wire. Thin enough to mold, but generally holds its shape. Edit: Still thinking about it (lol) ... actually could still use the bubble wrap over the chicken wire, then paper mache

    Thank you for solving so many problems of the build for us, Kelsey! I agree with someone else in the comments that chicken wire might be an easier solution for creating the form of the lamp, but you didn't have to go out to buy that. Also, one could use two blocks between the 2x4 legs instead of a whole piece of thin wood going from top to bottom - just a thought. Overall, I thought they were two great projects, and as I mentioned, you solved all of the big problems. Thank you!!!

Thank you @Sorrygirls for additionally (at times) helping underprivileged schools, young mother support centers, start up motels, appartment owners, home owners etc with free physical labor. It's a blessing to those communities you are serving and to all of us viewers communities as you leave us all with creative ( and cost effective like today's video) ideas on how we can make bettering our society, and our Sacred places such as our homes and our jobs more attainable.

    If you want stain to be more even and don’t have primer on hand, I usually just wet the wood first. Wetting the wood allows the wood to “even out” in dryness, that way you don’t have patches that absorb more stain than others (this also means you can do lighter coats of stain to achieve a specific tone). Apply the stain over the wood once it seems like it’s evenly wet. After the final coat of stain, let the wood fully dry and then do a very light sand before applying a clear coat.

    Good to see that you rip the paper (and follow the paper fibers' direction) - This makes the paper lay more smooth with less sharp edges AND it is a lot easier than cutting with scissors :) You can make your own paper-mache glue - needs help not to mold though... For the texture I would probably keep the papermache as is and then paint with natron/ baking soda paint.

    Bless you for making a paper mache light... I took Rachael's organic shaped frame DIY and turned it into a coffee table DIY for myself and it went pretty alright! Just took forever 😆 next, I was considering a matching faux concrete light fixture to hang above it and make the paper mache more purposeful. I didn't want to do the balloon method but rather get textured tape and use an existing thrifted fixture. But this DIY might still help to guide me a bit.
    Kind of glad I didn't go the "wabi sabi" route... it's a bit chunky 😆 I suggest watered down craft concrete for anyone wanting a similar look. It made my coffee table fairly smooth and flat(ish) but still look like rock.

    not sure how well it would work for shaping, but instead of a balloon, a big plastic/trash bag that you (temp) fill up with w/e (more paper, plastic, "trash") and then can do your paper mache over that? afterwards, you can just open the trash bag, grab things out and then also remove the trash bag to reuse it for other projects.

    Awesome makeover. One of my children love this style of lighting. The cost made my eyes cross. Looks like I may be doing a DYI.

    Id love to see you "retry" (fix it, not fully redo) the light. I feel like it had potential, maybe just because it needs sanded?

    That bench is Gorgeous 😮 wood is so expensive here but I might need to go and price out some lumbar for this! But a couch version

    I think you aced both projects ❤️ I personally love the Organic Modern style so totally relate the look you were trying to achieve so yes you nailed it. I think some people who don’t particularly care for the style or understand the aesthetic will not like the end result regardless of how appropriate it is. Just saying you did really well!

      @@shevahauser1780 Agreed! I was thinking of adding these plaster soaked linen pieces that people use for landscape modeling on top of the paper maché instead of the liquid paper maché.

    Yes, I try to watch on the first day but sometimes things just don't work out. However, I managed to watch this one at about the 17hr mark😁. I sorta like the pendant but I'm still on the fence. The bench is bonza though👍. I'd like to have a go at making one of those.

    For future DIY wood age accelerator, set a couple pads of steel wool in container of white vinegar. When steel rusts and dissolves it's ready to stir and use to naturally age wood for much cheaper. 👍
    Love your take on Wabi Sabi, excited to see the make over.😻

    I love your DIY projects. I have a recommendation for your next light shade project. Try making the paper mache out of white tissue paper because it will let more light through it.

    While I appreciate wabi sabi for what it is, I'm not a fan of the design. I think Kelsey did somewhat okay on DIY'ing a replica. I find it looks a little... bulky, maybe? That bench, though, is chef's kiss! I absolutely love it!
