Speaking of front wheel drive legacy wagons. My mom had a 95 (that my dad bought after the 90 blew the timing belt I mentioned) that was front wheel drive. In 2007, I took it for its bi yearly emissions test. I told the testers it was front wheel drive. After waiting almost 20 minutes I see them looking under the rear of the car. I asked them what the problem was. They said they couldn't find the rear differential. On a front wheel drive car? No kidding.
I remember as a young kid these used to be everywhere in the north east. Wasn't about until 2004 they started disappearing...
My daily driver is a 91 Legacy Wagon L, granted is automatic and I have the front wheel drive version, still a great drive and extremely easy to work on (mine only has a little over 85k miles), I hate the cup holders indeed and I installed a Android stereo but I have the original put away, the space is a problem as my kids are tall but most of the time it's just me in it so not a problem

I’ve owned 2 WRX’s and the spark plugs aren’t hard to change you just need those U-joint extentions on your ratchet and I can get it done in under 20 minutes. I also owned a 1993 leggacy gt turbo. it was like a mini wrx back in the day but it only made like 180bhp it wasnt that fast but it was really fun!
AWD was optional on Subarus in the US until 1995. I had a FWD L '90 5-speed wagon and it was a much better driving car than the AWDs, with performance close to the turbo (0-60 8.0 and 16.3 @ 86 1/4 mile at the drag strip), but with an even lighter feel and better on fuel. Changed out the terrible steering wheel and shift knob and it was a better, sportier drive than my GR86-MUCH better steering feel, better clutch feel, more character.
Mk1 Legacys were built in both Japan and Indiana, though they might have started with these face-lifted models, I don't remember now. My sister's '93 sedan, though, was US-built, my '90 was built in Japan.

Nice video! Two things to note: the last year in North America for the first gen Legacy was 94. And many of the first gen cars were in fact built here in the states, although the turbo models were built in Japan.
1994 was the last year of the first generation Legacy.
I currently own 2 1993 Subaru Legacy Turbo's. They are probably the best keep Subaru that know one cares or knows about!
My mom and dad had a 92 legacy wagon and I loved the car. It was a solid road trip driver car. It was one of the fwd only ones you mentioned. I remember it was ergonomic, comfortable, and basic without being cheap. I also remember it had the coolest map lights I've ever seen on the roof by the windshield. It'll light up your lap and not the whole cabin. The trunk space was fantastic. Also, the privacy cover lifts out for more room if you have to haul. I also remember the boxer 4 was underwhelming in BOTH power and mpg, as we'd get 28 mpg highway when the car really felt like it should break 30. Ive heard that was always Subarus downside with their boxer engines. Also had great cruise control controls on the steering wheel. Overall a great car and I miss it.
In Some markets, Like Australia , got these in 1990/ and they continued on until late 1994 . There was a entry level, Fwd version only for this generation available . The sports model was the. Liberty RS ( Rallye -Sport) Turbo, which was the pre cursor to the Impreza WRX which cam out out in late 1994 or early 1995.

I had a 92 spec Legacy. FWD, 1.8GL sedan. Upgraded to Factory alloys. Sold it when it had done over 200thou Km's. The rear seat was split 40/20/40. Behind the armrest was a ski port. It had no air either! Great car! Now on my 5th Subaru.
My dad had a 1990 Legacy 4 door 5 speed he bought new and put over 306k miles on it before we donated it to charity still running. At 257k, the timing belt snapped. He had a shop try to Faux it, but they couldn't. It sat in Chicago for a year before he had it towed to the dealer in Lynwood Illinois where he originally bought it. He told them to see what was wrong and if it was fixable, repair it. If not, keep it for parts to cover the tow bill. Turns out the other shop put the belt in wrong. So with a new battery and new injectors, it was back on the road.
I just recently picked up a '93 Legacy L wagon. AWD, 2.2L and 5 speed. It doesn't have a speck of rust and the subframe still has some of it's factory coating (came from Georgia). These cars are absolute tanks and are easy to keep on the road. As long as clean examples keep popping up for sale, I'll never buy a vehicle younger than 10 years old.
Those are one of the toughest cars I've ever seen I had a 91 Subaru Legacy that I got for free back in 2014 turned it into a figure eight derby car that thing's still ran until the day I took it to the scrap yard that Motors will not quit tough cars
My 94 Subaru L wagon was made in Indiana & is the SAME body style of this 93exactly

Man, I wish we still had these sedan-esque wagons, I'd buy one in a heartbeat (except for the German companies). Growing up, my uncle had a '97 Escort Wagon with the 5-speed and it was awesome.
I actually like the Outback take on the wagon. I really wish we had a Corolla or Camry wagon of any sort. Preferably lifted. I would really try to buy one.

@@darthdarthbinkss Personally I think only Honda or Toyota have any real chance of bringing back a traditional wagon as you said. The Camry, Corolla, Accord, and Civic are the only sedan name plates strong enough to really so so. But it really makes no financial sense to try though.
Subaru Outback.
I like old Subaru wagons. Such clean, simple designs. These aren't the most powerful or reliable cars but their owners keep them going because they won't drive anything else. Hearing front-wheel-drive and Subaru in the same sentence is weird from a modern viewpoint.
Wagons in general are super practical. I had a Taurus/Sable wagon that I regularly filled with more stuff than you'd think. I just traded it for a new Subaru Outback, this car's lifted descendant. This is where the (relatively) big Subaru wagons began.
I had one, sold it to buy yukon....would have the car back in a nano second!!!
1993 is not technically the last year of the first generation. My turbo wagon has a build code of 1994 and was sold as a 1994 in 1994
THat subaru was not build in japan it was built in Lafayette Indianna
my mom got this car in 2003 going from oldsmobile cutlass cruiser 3 litre v6 this was a rocket. even with the auto .
this engine is a firecracker is just breathes fire . definatly an upgrade from the loyale.
later on the trans would get stuck in 2rd if you had to accelerate to quickly probably from not servicing the trans. and then the headgasket went. but i loved that car it rode and handled pretty decently . the manual button was always a head scratcher all it did was start the car in 2nd and hold gears longer , nothing to do with manual driving more like a snow mode.
Ty for mentioning the manual button on the automatic shifter… as I have a 94 L wagon & could never figure out the reasoning behind it but I believe you are correct…it’s for winter driving… & funny thing.. I also had an olds cutlass wagon prior to my blue baby …I LOVE ❤️ my Subaru.. I’m retired from post office & still love driving my 94 😊
I am happy to own a 93 legacy sedan as my daily drive in Taiwan which has 228000 miles on it.
Hey, there are multiple variants of this. I have one that is not a fulltime all wheel drive. It has an additional gear for engaging 4 wheel drive. Few modern cars have been able to beat its acceleration in kinda drag race funny enough.
This car is in great condition for its age. I love the shape .

My family had one of these. Those hubcaps were not available, and on the L the "90's paint/trim decor" wasn't a thing. That seems all after market. My family had a teal paint scheme. One weird thing I remember was the lack of rear seat head restraints. It also had a hella heavy gas pedal.
I have a 93 wagon, automatic with AWD. It's great in the snow. I did think it should get better mpg though. 16 in town 28 hiway.
That type of fabric pattern is called "herringbone" by the way. Zig-zag zebra print... Hahaha!
I bought one that sat for 2 years and needed an ignition it just started right up when i got there. Never really needed the ignition

Actually the legacy started being built in Lafayette indiana in 1991.
I might be wrong; it's been awhile, but I think my 90 Legacy Sedan was build in Indiana, not Japan. Of course major components like engine and transmission came from Japan at that time.
@@bubblehead78 I believe my dad's was built in Japan. Iirc a VIN starting with 4 indicates Japan while a VIN starting with 1 indicates the US. I remember my dad saying they started building them in the US in 1991. He had some friends with a 91 Legacy wagon who lived in Lafayette (I was actually born in west Lafayette. We moved to northwest Indiana in 1988) and their car was built in Lafayette.
@@bubblehead78 it does appear they started building them there in late 1989. I believe 1990 had cars built in both Japan and the US. I know my dad bought his in late 1990 as a leftover model with ~ 700 miles on it. Iirc it was sold from one dealer to another. It was a 5 speed all wheel drive 4 door L, light blue with blue interior. Apparently all legacies carried the 4S at the beginning of the VIN regardless of where they were built. Odd because I always thought 1 was for cars built in US and 2 was for cars built in Canada.
Iirc my dad's car had some sort of OK Japan quality control sticker on one of the rear quarter windows indicating it was a Japan build.

They are covers, I am not sure of a brand!
I have a 91 wagon and the cup holders will fit a large Baja blast from Taco Bell and that’s all that matters

I had a 1990 Legacy Sedan. I loved that car. It was a front wheel drive only though. Before that I had a 1980 DL1600. My first new Subaru was a 2002 Legacy Sedan... loved that car. I then bought a 2018 Subaru 50th Anniversary Legacy. I went from being Subaru's biggest fan to never-again will I buy another Subaru. Subaru is not a great company now, in my opinion. They've lost control of quality as they've grown in size. I will never buy another, sad to say.
what went wrong with yours?
@@Dankcatvacs The seats that were supposed to be leather were only partially leather. The side bolsters were vinyl and the driver's side seat torn after 10,000 miles. My 2002 Outback had over 235,000 miles and only scuffing on the leather at that same spot! It took a year working with SOA to get that repaired. Also, the engine started making noise. I identified it as timing chain/bearing noise. The dealer denied it was a problem and suggested I didn't know what Subarus sounded like. This was after I had owned three Subarus already! The battery gave out after only a year and I had to have it replaced (which the dealer did do). A common problem as I understand. Basically, if the dealer had taken care of me instead of blowing me off, I would likely have stayed with the car; it was a 50th Anniversary issue after all! But the quality just wasn't there, at least compared to my prior three. I loved my 1980 DL1600 and 1990 Legacy Sedan (similar to the wagon shown here). The 2002 Outback Legacy 3.0H6 was an absolutely beautiful car. I dearly wish I had it back. But, Subaru is no longer in my future. I liked them when they were a niche product. Thanks for asking.
wait! airbag and motorized seatbelt 😱 i think this is the first time seeing this.
That's because the 1990 legacy didn't have an airbag. So they got motorized belts. The airbag came in in 92 or 93 and they didn't feel like redesigning the interior for normal belts. When the 2nd generation debuted in 94, it had dual airbags and manual belts.
The passive restraint mandate of 1990 was only for the driver's side, but was extended to the passenger side in 1994. This lead to some odd features. One of my friends had a 1994 Plymouth Sundance with a driver's side airbag and a motorized seatbelt on the passenger side only. This was because the 90-93 sundance already had the driver's side airbag. For 94, it's final year before being replaced by the neon, plymouth did not want to redesign the dashboard for a passenger airbag so they just added the motorized belt for the passenger. This is also likely why the 91-93 dodge shadow convertible did not return for 1994 as that car would have also needed a motorized passenger seatbelt which was not possible on a convertible (unless you're GM and cheat and attach it to the door and say it can be left buckled ala pontiac sunbird)
@@pdennis93 mirage 89-92 had motorized belts. The model changed in 93 and had motorized belts on both sides. 94 had driver airbag and motorized belt on passenger side. 95 and 96 had dual airbags. It was a crazy time indeed.
@@pdennis93 honda did the belt to door on the crx and civic hatch. The sedan had motorized. Hyundai excel also had the belt to door.
