    Your timing is amazing. In the area this week with my Lightning from the Sunshine Coast. I like Flo but feel their tech is behind - especially in term of charging speeds (I have been using the Tesla chargers all summer). These stations look great and I am going to try these out later today!

      @@LeftCoastEV OK - I just finished my rainy night charging session in a 2023 F-150 XLT Lightning (extended range). I have an OBD2 device - so got some good info. I pulled in at 45.5% SOC and charged to 80%.
      I’ll start with the 2 negatives first (Spoiler: everything else was great).
      Negative 1 - neither of the EZLIFT cables work. They were both stuck and would not extend. Flo really needs to change this design to a more standard system. They should make it simpler so this is not a failure point for the charger. Since the cables were both stuck they would not reach my charging port when parked properly. Fortunately it was a miserable night and I was the only one there so I parked parallel to A2 so the cable would reach the truck.
      Negative 2 - tapping my Flo card did not work! I am unsure if I was doing something wrong - but the process seemed straightforward (and I just used this card in Leduc earlier this morning). I had to start the charging session from the Flo app. I guess I could I have use tap-to-pay, but I have a balance on my FLO account that I want to use.
      I got the charging started with the FLO app and everything was fantastic from there. The charging session quickly ramped up to 158 kW (reported 156 kW in my OBD2 app). The truck was requesting 429 amps and the charger was giving 427 amps - that is pretty much perfect. I had just over 9 minutes of the trademark F-150 Lightning charge boost and then over the course of 2 minutes slowly ramped down to around 117 kW and ran at this rate all the way to 80%. For those unfamiliar this is the typical F-150 charging curve and it was a “perfect” session. It is exactly what I would expect from a Tesla Supercharger.
      At 80% the F-150 charging rate starts to dive. I stopped the charging session at that point. The session lasted 22 minutes and I added 49.6 kWh in 22 minutes at a total cost of $9.18. That works out to only $0.185 per kilowatt which is amazing. By far the cheapest fast charging I have ever done at the F150’s max speed. If I did this exact same session at the Windermere Tesla fast charger it would have cost almost 5 TIMES AS MUCH!
      Overall a great experience and nice to see the charging options starting to open up in the Edmonton area (It was a fast charging wasteland about 2 years ago).

      Amazing, thank you for such a detailed review of your charging session. I’ve pinned your comment to the top so hopefully (and if ever) someone from Flo reads this they should look into the issues you described. The RFID card problem is a strange one, not sure why you weren’t able to use it. As for the cable, I did find it hard to unravel when I was there too but I got it moving after a while. Again, thank you for all the details, I will need to take a faster charging car there myself (maybe an 800v) and see how my charging session will be (and I will film it of course).

      @@LeftCoastEV No problem! I really enjoy your content - it is always interesting, informative and presented very well. The China trip was amazing!! Please don’t stop.
      As for FLO I am going to work on a more detailed email directly to them (I will phone them tomorrow to get an email address that will get somewhere!). You are correct in your assessment - they have a big opportunity to really make a difference in the marketplace. They are so very close with this new unit, with some minor improvements I think they could be a Tesla competitor. And this is saying a lot. I’ve made 3 trips from the West Coast to AB/SK this summer in the Lightning and Tesla Superchargers made these trips a breeze (and making impossible routes possible).
      My suggestions to FLO will include “failsafe” EZLIFT cables. That is, if the mechanism fails it should release the cable. Sure, it will be on the ground, but it will be usable until fixed. They should also think about 360 kWh units at a minimum - get ahead of the EV charging curve - not behind it. (But hey, for me, 160 kWh is perfect). Another nice to have would be better CCS plugs. I thought all CCS DCFC plugs where the same until I used Shell Recharge. Shell has issues, but I think their CCS plug (with the nice handle) is great. Finally, if FLO could implement plug-and-charge tech with Ford that would be so wonderful. It is amazing to simply plug in at a Tesla charger and walk away.
      On a completely different note, when I rolled into town yesterday, I charged at Electrify Canada at the Canadian Tire in Windermere and EC ripped me off! When I plugged in the truck I got a charge rate of 227 kWh - which is impossible for an F150 (I took a picture of this with my phone because I could not believe it). I checked my OBD2 app - I was getting only about 130 kWh. However, they based their charge delivery calculation on this number and said I used 79 kWh (when in fact I received less than 50 kWh). Won’t be using EC again - and really no need with Tesla and these wonderful new FLO chargers.

    This is new for Canadians but we are years behind in EV tech and infrastructure. In China they are currently installing 6C charging stations in anticipation of their upcoming 6C capable EVs. Those new charging stations will end the longstanding range anxiety issues with 20-80 percent change times in less than 10 minutes (i.e. comparable to gas fillup times). And there are a ton of EV models in China that sell for less than the price of ICE. In other words, ICE is going to go the way of the dodo over the next few years globally Unfortunately we can't currently buy Chinese EVs because Conservatives are largely in denial on global warming and Trudeau seems to be following Trump and now Biden's trade war with China.

    • @LeftCoastEV
      @LeftCoastEV  4 місяці тому

      I was in China last month and was able to see their EV adoption first hand. We are light years behind what they are doing, not only in charging infrastructure but vehicles as well. If you want to see a small glimpse go watch my Wuling Bingo video from last week. The issue with North America is that the government still wants to protect our legacy automotive industry at all costs. But they are not innovating and not providing consumers the EVs we want. I was excited about the new Chevy Equinox EV and then watched the State of Charge videos that have put me off considering buying one. The charging times are just not up to par when it comes to a 2024 EV.

    • @mydogsbutler
      @mydogsbutler 4 місяці тому +1

      @@LeftCoastEV Yup. China is way ahead. They are currently installing 6C charging stations that once the accomplying 6C capable EVs go up for sale (probably next year) will finally end the longstanding range anxiety issue. It will take awhile for 6C charging stations to come to most of the rest of the world but it will happen.
      Despite all the naysayers ridiculously claiming EVs are doomed, China is the process of phasing out ICE precisely because EVs are now usually cheaper than ICE over there. And their EV and battery manufacturers are rapidly expanding into other countries. Biden and Trump tariffs can only go so far at preventing China's rise to global car dominance. If American car companies want to sell a car outside of America they will have no choice but to eventually move from ICE to EVs.

  • @richystar2001
    @richystar2001 4 місяці тому

    Most consumers are not buying EVs because of fear when the car goes beyond warranty. If it breaks after warranty it will not get service and you can't sell it. Software updates and monthly memberships to maintain premium features are another problem with EVs. Not to mention, if you live in an apartment the cost of charging is more expensive then gas, and it takes an hour to charge your EV to full.

  • @lashlarue59
    @lashlarue59 4 місяці тому +1

    That's almost 50 cents per kwh; that's almost gasoline prices. That's literally 10 times more than I pay when I charge at home at super off peak pricing. If they are going to charge that kind of money then why not just buy a much cheaper and more convenient gas car?

    • @LeftCoastEV
      @LeftCoastEV  4 місяці тому +2

      No one will stay at the charger for an hour. Most new EVs charge way faster and will need only a few minutes on one of these high powered chargers. Check the pinned comment and read about a guy charging his F150 Lightning on this charger and he paid very little. Also, most people charge their EVs at home and only use high powered chargers like this on road trips. So sorry to tell you that driving an EV is still way cheaper than even the cheapest ICE car.

      @@LeftCoastEV My gasoline bill was over $200 a month and it dropped to around $20-$25 a month in electricity because I charge at home and NEVER at DC fast chargers. So yes overall electric cars are cheaper but only if you're careful in how you use your money with them. But during a road trip when I need to get from point A to B as fast as possible, DC fast charging saves the day and I don’t mind paying for speed and convenience.

    It looks like the liquid cooled cables are leaking? 4:30 drip drip from the left one in use.
