  • This is my first attempt to make a gear video which has proven to be difficult because my load-out is always changing depending on an all the variable factors (weather, distance, temperature, location

    Hey Patrick,
So far, this set-up is working well for me. Now I just use a 2 ltr. Platy instead of the 3 for most trips (fits pack a little better), and allows me to only carry the smallest amount of water needed between fill-ups. The spigot is great for in camp use and allows for in line hydration from pack...sure beats the bite valve! I am excited to try out the new Sawyer "Mini", due out in Oct....might be able to shave some oz's & lose some un-needed hose. Take care & happy trails!

Cool.....I just recently switched to a very similar water filtering setup like yours.Used to use water bottles and a MSR Miniworks filter...all too heavy and the filter is slow and too much work. I now have the same Platypus 3L bag as you with a Sawyer Squeeze Filter for creek water and a 3L Camelbak Mil Spec bladder that I can refill on the trail with ease. It works great. I just came across your video and saw you had the same idea. It does make a great water spigot in camp as well.

Glad to see I'm not the only one. I use the Zip 3ltr also empty tell I get to camp or some times half full any how I just use a on off valve hang it wash my hands off fill my other bottles cook pot ext. I just like doing it that way but one time I had it hanging and my Samoyed he knows that the water is in there he ate the valve off so he could get a drink. I had to get a replacement one. Suckers to smart.

Functionality is my main goal re: hydration system...not concerned too much with a few oz.'s, but like having easy water flow at camp and ability to quickly fill water bottles and adjust the amount of water carried while hiking....so far, this set up covers those bases.
Oh yeah, got my sights on a lighter, smaller pack now that my "go-to" gear is rounding out.
    Take care!

Pete I use the same platypus with a valve and dumped the bite one a long time ago. Haven't tryed it with a filter but I hang it use it the same way. I never hardly fill it up tell I get to camp. I have gotten down in weight like you to the point I got a 34 ltr osprey excos pack. And could possibly go a little smaller maby a 30ltr.
