  • While in Hokitika you have to go and hunt for Green stone, walking along the beach we scouted for the rare stone. There were plenty of stones and some unusual ones at that, we found a few which we thought may have been Green stone which now sit in our garden.
We never got to check them but hay lets just say we found Green stone :-)

Hi m8 I have a request could you please do a fishing segment on Murray's bay beach . I grew up in torbay fishing long bay ladder bay the cove . Fished one night at Murray's bay did ok , but would love to see how it's fishing now . As I now live in queensland Australia it's a long cast . Cheers . Shifted to torbay in 1953 it was a great place to grow up , love your show and like what your doing wth the boys . Al from Australia

      Hi Al
Not sure if you have seen my You Tube fishing channel - Reel kiwi Fishing? I started fishing the bays in the mid 90's the exact spots you mention where ladders use to be my go to big snapper spot. My best there went just over 28lb guttered so may have reached that magic 30lb? The bays use to be such a magic place but sadly it is now only about 20% of it's glory days. Very rare to catch a double fig fish off the rocks now and if ya lucky you might get a couple nice fish to 5lb. I'm unsure what has really happened but it seems the the local fish are no more. A lot of their food does get collected by shoreline on low tides and also mask and snorkel but there seems to also be a lot of sediment - the inner gulf where we use to fish by boat is similar. it just seems the fish no longer come down that inner coast?
This is a link to a playlist and the earlier ones is surfcasting along the bays mainly from Murrays to Rothesay bay. ua-cam.com/play/PLugHbdD0nCdGUwdPcFfxbHO7mAXiwk-bn.html

Awesome video thanks for sharing. Just remember that you must have permission from the local iwi. The only reason I say is that I think there was some commotion around the issue.

Look at the arahura river on Google maps the local iwi have scrapped whole parts of the river bed for greenstone in my personal opinion they have no rights to claim it when they collect in the way they do

I have a tip for you on where to look, It is like 1 45 minute drive from koitika, it is a private river, let me know if you want the location, it is garuanteed to have pounamu as it is a fresh water river.

I just found a 2 kg chunk last week . Not saying what beach 😜
But I watch the weather all the time and study the tides and currents . Iv got green fever real bad I'm obsessed with the stuff . Look on the north side of river mouths the current is always pushing north so bugger all on the southern side

You aren't sure if it's greenstone. If it's green and it's stone then yes it's greenstone. That doesn't mean it's pounamu.
