  • In South Westland of New Zealand is a bay that is reported to give up the green prize of nephrite jade or locally known as Pounamu. Following leads given to us we found Hannah's Clearing in Jackson Bay reported as being "the place" to go when fossicking for this elusive treasure of greenstone.
    The rules around Pounamu is
Basically no collecting from rivers, only the beach, and to collect only what one can carry unaided.
We looked and looked and looked but were the pounamu gods smiling upon us?

I’ve found a couple of nice bowenite pieces at Jacksons bay itself and up the Jacksons river is another spot worth searching where we’ve found some pounamu , mainly a few pieces of inanga, drizzly day is good because they show up better

Greenstone has a white 'shell'... does it not???
I would have thought you would be looking at white rocks and giving them a whack with a hounding hammer?

Yes it usually does in the rivers, though on the beaches the tumbling action on the sand wears away the rind on some to most rocks. The trained eye unlike mine, will be able to spot both.
