That "Promotional" train set is exactly that. Those were usually given to employees whom were with the company for a long time as a sort of gift and for promoting their business to the available public. (a desktop/shelf display piece).
Pretty wild collection Dan, nice pick ups! The only suggestion I can think of on getting info on that possible catalog mockup consolidation, would be to get ahold of someone like Tony Cook since he does both Model Railroad News and its sister magazine HO Collector, plus he knows alot of people in the hobby, might be a good place to start!
I have an A&B unit of the early metal sharknose diesels. Finding an original Tyco Streamliners set with diesel was a cool find. As far as the silver Tyco sharknose with just the lettering and no striping, it may have been a kit where the owner just added the Tyco lettering. The early sharknoses were offered in kit form. So, it's possible the engine was made from a kit. Also, the wooden track maybe (?)Tru-Scale wooden roadbed on the Rodgers steam engine, and I'm guessing the engine was a Mantua kit steamer with the motor left out.
