  • Over a year ago now I purchased a severely damaged Rivarossi Atlantic for dirt cheap, and was disappointed when it arrived nearly decimated. After being told the chances of repair were slim to none, I decided to try my hand at rebuilding this incredible piece of Rivarossi’s legacy.

Thank you for posting this video. The pictures of the internals are going to come in handy.
I just picked up one of these myself. Friend got 2 from his grandpa and sold one to me for $25.
It ain't very good. Missing the trailing truck and fireman's side valve gear, and the cylinder block is showing signs of early-stage zinc pest (which my friend decided to "fix" with a frankly insane amount of super glue. Looks like he gave it a super glue bath), but the frame is somehow intact and the motor runs smoother than silk.
It's gonna be a fun project when I eventually get the parts I need, and unless I somehow get one of the even rarer Hiawathas, it'll probably be the rarest HO locomotive I'll ever own.

I collect old radios and have a few Bakelite radios. I have seen other collectors restore the Bakelite cabinets, they can take a shattered case and make it look like it never was broken. However I believe, from what I remember, their methods involve sanding which would have been extremely difficult on this with all the molded on details. You did an amazing job restoring that loco Dan!!

That is Really cool you were able to fix that, basically from the ground up. It looks and runs fantastic now, great work. These are the people in the Train community that we need, people to restore these things people like you and me. Keep up the good work Dan.

You did good on that one, you can't even tell it was broke in half. Especially considering the price, I would have done the same thing, repair it to working. Bakelite is not too difficult to repair, sometimes superglue works, except if there's tension on it. I'm going to have to find one.

Wow, that's amazing how something in shipping got destroyed and probably would never run again, but it did run once again, and I would call that "lucky 4-4-2 that could" or "lucky 4-4-2 token"

I actually got 2 of these last month in a lot for $30 one was missing half the rods and both had only the tender shells. But the locomotive had very little signs of sink pest and the only problem for one was the motor had no more ball bearings. But the shell and cosmetics for it are perfect

Awesome video Dan. I really enjoyed how much time and effort you put into the engine and how long it took you to get it. Someday in the future I'd like to meet up sometime And talk to you in person

Yo my dawg... have you ever considered after super glue repaires putting some very tiny bits of bondo over it and they sanding with 6000 grit. Then painting it so its flush? You have automotive experience now so I would consider giving it a try!
