I’ve had HO trains since 1970. There are so many times while running or working on old TYCOs, Life Likes or AHM models I feel like I’m pulled back into time, for just a brief moment. 🙂
Hey Mark, great project - thanks for sharing! I really enjoy just having these upgrade videos on in the background while I work here. It's great to see an older, lower budget car get some life and quality parts added to it, too! I'd never seen the wheel truer before, either. Neat tool! Those metal wheels rolled so nicely... it definitely did its thing!
Nice job! Oh this reminds me I still have a Difco dump car to weather for my FGLK layout. I've seen you use that Tamiya panel liner before. Now you've convinced me to give up on the homemade India Ink stuff and get the real deal. Really like that you've found your own unique weathering techniques. If a fabric pen works - it works! Nice job showing that MicroMark wheel tuner. Great application for it. As far as using stuff you have on hand - I'm all for it! I thought the pace and tempo of the video was right on point. Really enjoyed it. Take care - Bill😎
Thank you so much! I’m one of those guys who saves interesting plastic or metal pieces I find at work, home and even walking around somewhere. You just never know what you can make. I bought that Panel Liner for its intended use, just making fine molding lines stick out more, but when using it, I used too much. I got all over a car and that’s when I thought to use it for weathering! I get a kick out having a high end model running along an inexpensive (if not free) model that I put a little time and effort in.
@@MyFingerLakesRailwayLayout At the moment that’s gone no where. My wife and I went shed shopping and I found one we both agree with. Then the hot water heater went and we are looking are having our roof replaced. That put the shed on the back burner.
CP has air dump cars like this in BC for dumping rock reinforcing tracksides in the mountains. There also a dead one in the OSL yard in Tillsonburg Ontario
I have an air dump car I haven’t built yet. I thought about doing air containers, but I took the easier route. I saw this at as some one off car that would be found on a lonely spur.
Holy cow mark that turned out great. Was wondering how you could make a cheap tyco worth running on an awesome layout look good. And you did it. Not a kids train no more. Great job. Great video...
oh fabric markers too? okay! I did grab some fabric sprays from a garage sale to help break up solid colors on layouts; do you do anything with sharpies? I use em on some soft plastic lures to get some crazier custom colors.
I haven’t used sharpies for weathering. I’ve read the Sharpies oil paint markers are nice, but they are as expensive as The POSCA markers. I love the DecoFabric brown paint marker. I use to be able to go to Michaels and get one or two. Now I can’t find them there.
A fun little project 👍 Looks 1000% better than the original 😉 I like your weathering techniques and upgrades. I was just up in the gold fields of Colorado last week and your load looks authentic 👍😎🚂
Thank you! I think it’s been over 5 years since I was in Colorado, so I was trying to remember what the soil was like. I’ll be doing another upgrade on a third car I got in the auction!
This car was part of a toy train set marketed by the name on that car. There is a UA-cam video entitled "TYCO Clementine Train Set Commercial" in which the use of the fictitious car is demonstrated. It was designed to be filled with a loader that came with the set and unloaded exactly as you demonstrated - by manually tipping the upper part over.
I really hate talgo trucks (trucks that have the coupler attached). I always cut them off and body mount Kadee couplers. I also change out the plastic wheel sets for Walther Proto 2000 metal wheel sets. Now I've got a box full of plastic wheel sets but I'm saving them for flatcar loads and gondolas. Cheers from eastern TN
I’m not a fan of Talgo trucks either. Sometimes it’s just easier to use them. A few months ago I gave a big box of plastic wheels to a friend who owns a train shop. I already got another collect of plastic wheels started!😀
Just the word TYCO takes me back years and years... nice way to it , looks good 👍 😎 Darrell

This was fun to play around with. That truck tool is great if you do a lot if upgrading. As you saw the car rolled so easily after.
@@MyLifesTracks It sure did! Looking forward to the next one!

@@MyLifesTracks any update on a possible layout? I know it would be so cool! Good luck🍀 - Bill

@My Life's Tracks Bummer. Maybe you need to realign your priorities: 1. Layout 2. Roof 3. Hot water. Hope this helps - Good Luck😎👍 - Bill
Great job, Mark. the weathering looks good and the load looks like trailing from the mining prosses. Thanks for sharing this project with us, David.
Thank you David. I’m glad you enjoyed it. It was fun just to try various stuff to get the final look.

Thank you so much!
That looks pretty neat! Nice! 👌
Thanks Buddy! It was fun to make. I’ve started work another car from that auction lot.
@@MyLifesTracks You're welcome! Oh sweet man, can't wait to see how it turns out!
Awesome man...can't wait to have more time to do stuff like this. Have a great day!!
Thank you! You’ll have a blast doing this. With inexpensive cars, who cares if you mess up and you learn a lot while doing it.
Nice video of the upgrade of the Tyco car. Have a nice day.

Thank you! I think any rolling stock can be upgraded and made cool. Plus, it’s a fairly inexpensive way to make nicer pieces.
I have the same one! I'm in, let's go
Do you have all the pieces that came with it?

interesting job on that car Mark! came out very nice :)
Thank you. I see this car as being on a mountain spur on some unknown railroad in the mountains.
That would make a good work train consist.
@@michaelquinones-lx6ks It would! Paint it grey or a boxcar red with a MoW on the sides would look great.

What trucks did you use please? want to do a conversion myself ,thank you!. Great to see your process for upgrading your rolling stock New sub
Thank you. I just used the trucks that came with it. I did replace the Walthers metal wheels I put on in the video with Kadee ribbed wheels.

I have another version of this car that came with glow in the dark ore. I remember as a kid seeing commercials for model train sets on TV!
I actually have the train set not in great shape but still have it
Had one of those in a Tyco train set
I see these all the time at train shows.

Did you check the coupler height?
@@davidbarrera308 Yes and they are at the correct height.
