This answered my question as to whether I want a bridge (new model) or without a bridge (old model). I think for buyers, these shouldn’t be seen as “new” as “better” but simply if you want a bridge or not. Personally, I like the vibrancy, sustain and richness the bridge-less lyre has, but the bridge lyre fares better with individual notes. It stands out more in the mix whereas the bridge-less the notes tend to blend together for that ethereal/cathedral sound. The bridge-less’ higher notes have that twinkling echo effect that’s just lost on the bridge model. Though, on the bridge model, you can hear the basser notes way more clearly. To each their own! If someone wants a sound that has less echo for you to add your own effects, go with the bridge. If you’re someone who likes the echo and won’t be doing any heavy post-processing, go with the bridge-less.
Both are beautiful lyres it seems to me. I prefer the sound of the old one, it has more softness and depth to it, in my experience. Thank you very much Maria for this comparison video.
Great video. I personally have two Aklots - the solid one you have with a bowl rather than a soundbox, and a deerhead one. Both sound great. Aklot seems, by and large, to be very good value for money. Thanks for putting this here.
Thank you so much for this comparison! I've been eyeing the original version for quite some time, and only just realized that it now comes in a new version as well. With the price difference I was curious, but after hearing them side by side I definitely know which way to go. I realize it's up to personal preference, but I MUCH prefer the more mellow sound of the original!
Oh man. They are very similar but they sound quite different. I think I'm partial to the older model (which is odd cuz I typically favor sound cavities opposed to flat boards). That lyre sounds really good though. Honestly, you can't go wrong either way. I just love the sound of lyres.
I agree very different and i actually alps prefer the more mellow sound :)but I agree you can’t go wrong with either one! Both well made an sound pretty. Good value for the money ! Thanks for watching !

Your videos are excellent I've watched a few, just one thing there is no such instrument as a Lyre Harp, only Lyres or Harps. eBay and Amazon sellers when they advertise Lyres or Harps tend to add both words to the description to attract more hits, the same way some sellers list Ukelele Banjo Guitars Basses.

The one with the sound hole sounds more like a harp. I’m glad I watched this before buying one. The other one looks cool but too twangy. I always wanted to learn to play the harp but it’s so big and not easily accessible and not easy to store so the lyre just seemed like a alternative for me.

Maria, is it normal for a 16 string lyre to have uneven string height? I have the Aklot w/o the bridge and the strings vary quite a bit in height. I am considering a Walter.T and hoping it might not have this issue. Thank you in advance for any help. 🙂
I actually don’t think it is supposed to be this way. It could be how it was strung but perhaps also because it is an inexpensive harp. I am sure a better oke might not have that problem. Good luck!
Do you think it would be possible to restring and change the tuning and put the lowest notes in the middle of the harp? I was wondering if I could do some kind of reverie harp style tuning, where one side is C, E, G, A and the other is D F A C? Thanks!
Funny that you should say that. I wondered the same thing. I can't see why it shouldn't work but perhaps you should call a place like harp kit.com or music makers. They are very helpful and actually sell harp and lyre strings. If you do. Please let me know. I might consider that myself.
@@MariaCalfaDePaul I sure will! I'm a Music Therapist and would love the reverie harp, but the price tag is too high for me. Now that a couple of months have passed, have the strings on your newer harp mellowed? Thank you for sharing!

Hi! I am a beginner lyre harp self-learned! Im trying to look for an affordable but QUALITY sound one that's 22 strings or more. Whats your recommendation? Does it matter if its nylon or metal strings??
Well nylon are usually easier on the hands and they are color coded so that you know where the C and the F’s are making it easier to navigate if you are reading music. Good luck
I have one of these (the solid one on the left) and I've put nylon strings on it. It sounds delightful and a lot more traditional because, back in the day, they didn't have metal strings! They usually used animal gut, so nylon is the next best thing and gives you that softer sound that you get from old/traditional lyres without murdering animals! YMMV as to which you prefer. I've seen some nylon/metal string comparisons on the Tube. You should watch videos like that to help you decide.
Yes I agree there is certainly a difference. I couldn’t quite place it. I also think the new one sounds brighter and the older one more mellow. Thanks for watching and your thoughts too !!
Hello, excuse me I've already bought this amazing instrument but when I started to know the notes I realized how play it, I mean if the Low notes are close to chest or the high note could go to close to chest or it doesn't matter the position?
