Poly-Fil, Purigen, Chemi-Pure Blue, and Marine Pure don’t remove green water algae or brown tannins long term. The only all-in-one filter media which does that, plus polishes the water, clears out detritus, removes odors, lowers ammonia, phosphates, chlorine, nitrites, nitrates, etc. - is Marineland’s Zeolite Blend. Too many items to list as far as its capabilities, and it’s amazingly cheap.

Still with the Brightwell? It may start out fine but melts away to goop in your sump. Go with Marine pure. It's kinda crumbly at first but only while you handle it. Once in place its perfect and doesn't turn to mush.

I use marine pur balls for my nitrate export. I have a very small sump and seems to be no flow around it so is it okay to add a small wavemaker in the sump? Also did i I hear you say that studys didint show denitrification? They were a elevated and I have no corals yet and just 3 fish an d turkey baste most leftover food which isnt much. So probably shoulnt have nitrates, especially if these were working, but week before they were zero I think(hard to judge color) I change filter socks every 3 days and they are very dark at the bottom which is so weird being there cant be much to break down but this tells me time to get someone over to hook up my skimmer! Just learning all this stuff!

What are you supposed to do when the gfo isnt spent but phosphates start to rise a little? I checked mine the other day and it was 0.09 so being the high grade gfo is expensive I idnt want to throw it away(plus was only about a month old) so I just added a teaspoon more to a 36 gallon. Is that when I could use the phos e? I just dont want to have to dose it daily especially since I do everything by hand! I run gfo in a bad in my filter sock. and one in a chamber in my aio. I used to add phosguard but last time it didn't work at all! I also used to use chemipure elite and just stared using brs!

  • @karennation3580

I use chemi pur elite for po4 but po4 slowly starts to rise. What should I use until its cash? Is the phospate e good for that or should I just add a little phosguard? Also can adding bioballs cause a mini cycle? I have heard of seasoning them with mb7 first. Do you know of the technique to do that? I think I might have caused a mini cylcle adding them and also sand that wasnt live plus big frag mounts (made of cement or ceramic) that hold 3 and some hold 5, they sit on sand bed. I used them for acclimating my corals. Is it not advised to add fresh frags plugs that arent alive? I have some soaking in my 7 but dont know the ratio or if its doing anything at all. I have some corals die after adding that stuff when my parameters are good. I also added some to my sump a while ago that should be good to go!

Waste away totally destroyed my flourishing mixed reef. I wanted to get rid of a little excess algae the crabs weren't getting. Once I dosed it, my corals literally and slowly wasted away until it was just a clownfish. I had zoas, monti, euphyllia, you name it. No other changes to husbandry, and my tank I didn't add it to is fine.

What is the point of bioballs if it dosnt lower nitrates and phosphates? I have been using them with no luck and just bought a huge bag because I thought maybe they were to old plus wanted to try in a nano AIO. I know they up bacteria but i thought it was the type of bacteria that consumes nitrates. Is it helpful in anyway if you have plenty of sand and live rock? Should they be replaced at some point. The ones I have in my tank now and thought of replacing might be very old because I bought preowned live rock that came with a lot of them.

    • @jjmccloud

Bioballs aren't good for much of anything in the reefing hobby, they are good to support large bio loads in fish only tanks and what not but even for that nowadays u have the marine pure plates and blocks that do twice as good in 80% less space.
