Hi Stuart. You "kerfed" that wood roll to bend it over the barrel. Thats what we call it. Now maybe i taught you something 😉😅 Great work.

@@slbleadworks Hi Stuart. i have been to college quite a few times in my life. 25 years ago i qualified as an electrician. About 22 years ago as a carpenter and about 12 years ago as a plumber. So if there is any knowledge about those things you need , i can pay you back. 😅
* in case you didnt know, the reason its called kerfing is the thickness of a saw blade is its "kerf" kind of obvious im sure but there it is. I think technically the kerf is the channel left after the cut but its pretty much the same thing.

@@slbleadworks Getting messed up for life from a fall from height is certainly one of the downfalls of roofer/lead worker, but according to the UK government you are just as likely to suffer such an injury from a pissed off co-worker in what they term an "act of violence" ; and are much more likely to suffer such an injury from tripping over your own feet or shit you leave lying about on the floor level you're working, 8% vs 33% www.hse.gov.uk/statistics/causinj/kinds-of-accident.pdf
Note: I see you were working in the rain and that is probably normal given the weather in the UK , but be careful. Don't want you falling down.

Once all the free edges are dresses down they turn into the copper edge just using your hands and some heat to soften the lead.

Do you burn the clips onto the lead down the bays. You said you tagged clips for over the overcloaks, but i'm thinking with 400mm laps, the clips are all burnt on.
Gotta admit, i never folded the lead clips so there was room for expansion, but it makes absolute sense to do so. Weird that you mostly follow how you've been taught, and it takes a good while to change how you do things.
But anyhow, more good tips.....and the work looks outstanding.

Yes all the clips were burnt on. The lower you can get them the stronger they will be.
And it’s very important to leave the 6mm expansion gap on the clips. I quite often look up at dormer cheeks on other jobs and you can usually see where the lead has expanded and contracted and pushed all the clips out making them useless.

The soakers on the front aren't aluminium are they ?
I think they are aluminium or zinc. I know both cause premature corrosion to lead. So they are covered with building paper.

Hi. Can you show a step by step way of best way and where to cut your lead to do the best chimney gutter back? Iv recently started to try and weld as I did it in college 20 years ago but I don’t know the best ways to do certain things? Much appreciated if you could👍👍

Thank you. I think there’s certain courses you can go on. But really you need to be an apprentice or work along side a lead worker.
superb leadwork as always mate, you make it look like a work of art,
the only thing l wasn't sure of was the slaters felt going under the pipe and your lead at the back of the bay, I'd of rather of lapped it over the lead, just in case a slate or ridge ever gets damaged above it, if one did the rain could run down the felt and under the lead. Still amazing skills though pal
Thank you. I quite enjoy doing barrel dormers. Especially with wood rolls and not welts. Yes your 100% right. The roofing felt should go over the lead. The carpenters pinned all the felt down when they installed the pipe at the back. The roofers told me they are going to put felt over the top before they slate these.

Is it ok to use bituminous building paper under lead,
I see you have used it here but I was told never use any bitumen under lead due to the temperature the lead can get to.

Yes this is the underlay that is recommended. We used to used felt. But this is so spongy and sucks up the water too. Also a nightmare to cut 🤦🏻♂️.

I know nothing about lead, so please forgive me for the stupid questions. Are those ribs necessary? Why can't you just have a flat overlap?
Hay no worries thank you for your message. Well you can either do it like this or something called a welt. You can never flat lap lead. The water will always find its way in.
@@slbleadworks That makes sense. So the lap isn't welded then? I assume that allows for expansion and contraction.
@@olafbigandglad yes the wood rolls or the use of welts allows the individual bays to move. We are only allowed to install lead up to certain sizes. For this as it was code 5. The maximum is 1.2 square meters.
Right thats well impressive mate i love what you do good welder good lead man but please with the back upstand lap the felt over mate please not doing any good going down the back of the lead
Hi thank you. Yes the carpenters didn’t lift the felt up before fitting the tilt fillets and back channel. So when the roofers come back I’ll ask them to put some felt over the back up stand of the lead before they slate.
Many times I watch clips of you, but I do not understand since you only show us at the beginning and the end, I mean the time of installation, do not film the clip, is there a worker with you?
Unfortunately I work on my own. I try and show as much as I can whenever possible.
