Great video! I have one of these also. The sound is great for the price. Unfortunately, mine is back at Tascam being repaired for sticky buttons. I can’t wait to get it back.
Thank you and glad you enjoyed it. Agree they're great value for money. Luckily I've had very few problems with mine so far and I've had it for almost 5 years. I used the wrong smart card at the start, but since I've changed to the SanDisk Ultra it's been fine.
Hey man! I've probably come back to this video once every year since 2020, because this Taskam was my first home recording purchase, and I thank you for showing your entire process! I do have a question however, after you master one of your songs, do you just upload it directly to UA-cam?! I have been really struggling to find mastering programs that can get loud enough, but I figure if I already use this device to record, why not master here as well?
Glad it's been of help to you. Yes I master it and export the song from the Tascam to my computer in WAV file form. When I upload the song onto my computer I firstly convert it to MP3, as the Slide show creator I use only uses MP3. There are a number of free programmes online to do this, I like Online Audio Converter. Then I use another free programme MP3Gain to boost the volume. You'll need to make a video file which will be a picture file and your music file, to upload onto UA-cam. I use another free programme NCH Suite Slide show creator to make the video file, save it to my computer video files, then upload that onto UA-cam. Hope this helps.
Thought maybe I'd hear a Bay City Rollers cover! I'm just kidding, of course. Great video and thanks so much for all the great information. Now to go back to my Tascam and try to replicate. Thanks again!
Thankyou for your kind comment. No I used an AKG D5 microphone, going into an ART 30 Tube preamp, then into a Boss NS2 Noise Suppressor pedal. All are fairly low budget, £65, £39, and £75, but they make a big difference to the vocal sound in comparison to the internal mics.
Has anyone recorded synths with this unit? Would I set it to mic/line or guitar for the input? Also, say i record 8 songs for an album. How do i make sure they're all mixed and mastered at the same level? Like when i want to make an album, how do i check to see if all the songs are the same and not have some that are louder than others? I'm very new to recording, so i appreciate any help.
I've recorded keyboards a few times, not for my own demos but for a pals. Definitely use the mic/line input for that. As for volume levelling, I use mp3gain, which is a very handy free download and works a treat.
Yes I'll have to do a video of that, although my SR16 is ancient and some of the pads aren't that responsive anymore. Give me a week or so and I'll try to get something sorted.
@@Kevin.Hearty Okay. So far, my Boss Dr. Rhythm works. The bass works. I am having issues with my electric guitar now. I have a Strat and a Line 6 Spider I 120. I plugged my jack cable into my Headphones/Out into the Tascam Input A. Thing is I can barely get a sound out of my speakers connected to my Tascam. Am I doing something wrong here or do I have to chose another External Input setting?
The Headphones/Out like on most Amps, disables the Amplifier speaker so you shouldn't be getting any sound at all. If you mean that the Tascam isn't picking up any sound then you can select the medium or high input setting on the Tascam. My Boss Katana works on the low setting, as it has a compensated Recording Output. I'm not sure about a Line 6 as I have no experience with them.
If you use up all 8 Tracks you can bounce them on to 2 tracks, which will leave you another 6 free tracks to use again. I haven't done this on any of my UA-cam songs, but I did it when making a backing track for a friend, and it worked out fine with no loss in sound quality.
@Andre Shephard I think you mean after it is complete but as long as it has not been mastered you can continue to add & as @Fenderkev said you can "bounce" down the tracks to continue until it begins to saturate - rock on ~
Hi kev I have the same tascam and drum machine as you! However i can't get the drums to play back even though the tascam is picking them up. Do I need to use speakers with stereo l and r for this to work? At the moment I'm just plugging into a speakers aux in from the tascam headphone jack. Cheers Dan
I do most of my recording with headphones, although the drums can make you ears hurt after a while recording this way, so I understand why you'd like to hear them through speakers. I don't think there would be enough volume to drive speakers alone from the headphone socket. You would need to connect the line out L and R sockets via phono leads to an amplifier of some kind which in turn will drive your speakers. I use an ancient Sony Hi Fi amplifier for this purpose, and also for all my mixing too. You can buy a Hi Fi amplifier quite cheaply on Ebay which is where I bought mine. From memory mine cost £45, and it's 70 watts per channel, which is way more than I'll ever need.
Hi, I've just bought one of those but I'm lost when it comes to getting it to record anything. I have the Tascam plugged into my amp via the aux input. I'm assuming this will let me hear anything I manage to record on it. I want to use the two internal mics on the Tascam but so far I can't seem to get it to record. I've carefully followed all the steps shown in several videos but with no luck. I have the input setting on "internal mic" / low. My guitar is just plugged into my amp. I just want the internal mics on the Tascam to pick up the sound coming from the amp, but as I said, no luck achieving this so far. I'm using the SD card that came with the device. Would the problem be with that? Does it need formated? Because I've tried that too, after I tried everything else. Still no joy. Also, how exactly does a guitar plug into the device? What is connected to what? How exactly is a guitar plugged into the amp AND the device? I can't figure that out. The lead has 2 jacks, one in the guitar, one in the amp. If I plug the guitar into the Tascam directly then I'm not connected to the amp. Can you please explain? Thanks in advance.
If you're using the internal mics I'd try the High setting rather than low, and adjust with the gain control. My Tascam is connected to an old hifi unit I have via the aux OUTPUTs on the Tascam, although you can hear anything you record with headphones, there's a mini jack socket on the back of the Tascam. I used the rec out socket on the back of my Boss Katana for guitar sounds. Connect a lead from that into the A channel plug socket on the Tascam although you can use the B channel if you prefer. Just make sure you change to the B channel with the assign button. Hope this helps.
Looking through the instruction manual I see nothing about changing tempo. I've never done it, so I stand to be corrected, but I'd say no you can't change tempo.
Do you mean with a guitar or keyboard? Yes you can as the DP-008EX has seperate 1/4 inch jack sockets and XLR sockets so you can record a mic or instrument of your choice at the same time.
QUESTION. I hate recording dry guitar strings. Can I record with guitar effect pedals plugged in or will it screw the sound up. I like heavy gritty sounds ( distortion,Fuzz,BlakMagik.) as the Tuscan doesn't have a built in Guitar Modulator. ???
Not a great idea to record with the guitar plugged into just a guitar effect. It will be very tinny sounding in my opinion. Most of my recordings are done with a BOSS ME70 which has COSM Amps, (Amplifier simulation), or in later recordings directly from the compensated output of my Amplifier. which in my opinion gives a much more realistic guitar sound. Best option of all is to mike up an actual guitar amplifier, but I don't have the facilities to do this as I have to keep volume at low level unfortunately.
but wouldn't one stomp box that costs almost 100 dollarssound just as good as a guitar multi effect pedal whats the difference in sound quality for recording?
What you need is a multi effects pedal with COSM Amplifier simulation in it. Plugged directly into a recorder it sounds like an Amplifier that's been miked up, which is a lot fuller sounding than a single effects unit. Small Amplifiers like the Fender Mustang, or the Boss Katana have compensated recording outputs that when plugged directly into a recorder also sound similar to the sound you'd get if you miked up a larger Amplifier speaker. You used to be able to buy single pedals that were Amp simulators like the Session JD10, but the majority of multi effects units now have Amp simulation which have made the single units redundant. Something like the Digitech RP55 is well under $100, and has multi effects and COSM Amps too, so you don't have to spend a fortune to get one..
What if i made a beat on a sampler/sequencer that has 8 tracks. I know I can only record 2 tracks at a time. Is it possible to record the remaining 6 tracks of the beat and some how sync them so each track is on beat? My concern is that I'm not playing a live instrument to a drum track. I'm playing samples already programmed to the drum track. So essentially it would be like the drum machine playing a different sound on each track in perfect timing to the drum machines sequencer. Hope that makes sense
I don't think the TASCAM has a sync function, but as long as you had a click intro to lead you into the start of the rhythm track, you could maybe record the remaining tracks manually. Even to record 2 tracks simultaneously you would have to somehow split the tracks into input A, and input B from your sequencer, as if you just plug into either A or B, the 2 tracks will be exactly the same. I assume it has 2 outputs for stereo playback? I must admit I have no experience with sampler/sequencers.
Fenderkev yeah I was thinking of doing the same thing. Can I trim or move a recorded track forward or back like if the track is slightly off beat? Thanks
There is a copy/paste function on the TASCAM that may let you do this, but again it's something I've never tried. When it comes to recording and song writing, as you've probably gathered I'm definitely old school. :)
Great video! I recorded a 2 min song, and everytime is mastering it, it stops at 23 seconds. When i export it, 2.3 sec gets only exported. I'm using a 4 gb card, as it came with the device. Do you have a clue what's going on? Thanks
Glad you liked the video. You may not have enough space left on your SD card.. Get yourself a 32GB card, the SanDisk Ultra is the one I use. Between mixes press the redo button twice to clear some space on the card, or all your mixes remain on the card until you turn the Tascam off and restart. . This should solve the problem.
You can only record 2 tracks at a time, although I record one at a time. It's just a matter of building tracks up. Drums first then Bass, guitars, and finally vocals. Hope this answers your question.

Is your bass plugged through an amplifier or directly into the Tascam?
Directly into the Tascam with the guitar setting on the back selected. There is a Mic/line setting too. I also turn on the Bass compression as well.

does the unit have built in distortion or did you have to go external?
No, all the guitar sounds come from my Boss Katana 50 Amp, plugged direct into the recorder.
Hey. Maximum length of each track is limited to SD card only or there are some other time limitations?
I have a 32GB SD card with about 14-15 songs all 3-5 minutes long so I'd say maybe 45 minutes maximum? Depends on how many tracks you use too.
@@Kevin.Hearty If the card is empty, is there possibility to record straight 2 hours on 1 or 2 channels?
I've reached 45 minutes with 7 to 8 tracks used, so it may be possible, although I couldn't say for sure.
