I love mine! With the Bluebox and plenty of cables, you’ve got pretty nice recording rig! You just need an interface which I have 3 or 4 products that will be an interface if I need one. None of them bought for that purpose! The best part I was able to purchase mine brand new for I believe $145 on ZZounds’s outlet! Just what a great deal! It’s a fantastic portable for sampling, again just like the Bluebox it requires the right splitter cables, and neither are an interface but could be with a firmware update!

If you're having issues with getting an external microphone to work, through XLR input A or B, it's because the type of microphone connected (condenser mics) needs an additional setting turned on to recognize and record audio. Just press the phantom button and press on.
Thanks for the video. It was simple to understand. I have a few recording devices and I really like this Tascam dp-008ex which I use for quickly coming up with things always ready with mic on amp. All my equipment is hardware not software. Anyway, thanks again for staying direct and on point.
Hi there I found your description really good. I am completely blind and I am considering buying this device. Listening very carefully to your description I think it would be possible for me to use enough functions to record and mix. I really liked that the source menu did not rap between internal mike low and high etc so if I knew when I got to the top I could count the clicks. Some things would be impossible like seeing if I was clipping I would tend to verge on the side of caution here and put the input to low. Also source routing to the different tracks so input 1 to track 1 3 5 etc and that is fine if I do not change it. I do think this recorder with time learning menus etc could work. Thank you very very much for your excellent demonstration Joe

@@StudioonaStick Wow thats a good playlist, thanks for that and for responding! Maybe I’ll bump up to the 006 or 008 someday.. Question; I sing and play the guitar and have not yet figured out to record a song I’m doing that we plan on attaching to a UA-cam video whether is better recording quality to use the internal mics or the inputs for guitar and microphone (which I haven’t understood how to do both at the same time- guitar and microphone with the inputs)… Or is it best to record guitar only then add the vocals on another track? First Timer on this and I really appreciate your instructions. I had an XLR and a line in on input B. Uh, no. Found out that was not possible. One at a time is good! :) Thanks so much.
Hoping someone can help me on this ? SD card in and formatted. I have created the song space, Using the internal mic low, with headphones I can hear my singing or tapping, arm track 1 and hit play & record. On playback there's nothing. And of course the monitor volume up. What am I missing please ??? Thanks
Make sure you check Input Assign, A/B Then make sure the red light is on when you are "recording". I have failed at that a few times and now I consciously press and hold Record first and then press play.
Joe, I'm a musician and as writer, not a techie. I thought the Tascam would be a stand-alone solution to recording. The TRUTH is that without a computer, it is a lump of plastic, a $300 doorstop. It will not help you create anything. This is a fact that I don't see in any Tascam marketing, or in the manual. YOU have shown this, and thank you, but where do the Tascam people show their machine connected to a Mac or a PC? And where in the Tascam manual do they EXPLAIN how the Tascam interacts with the computer? They don't--and I think this is why, from many You Tube comments, you can see that many, many people have no idea how to use the machine--and toss it in the closet. A recorder is to CREATE things. It is used by creative people. The Tascam may be an electric engineer's idea of heaven, but it is a bitch for almost anyone else. So, Joe, could you make more videos showing how to use the Tascam in the creative process. How to lay down some initial tracks, how to label and save them, then how to make some changes in them, and save and label those, and so forth. You have done a nice job in explaining how to reverse engineer a master back to an earlier state, for instance. And how to export songs more simply, without mix down or mastering. But I think a full video taken from this point of view would be great. It might get thousands of Tascams out of the closets. And if you have any talks with the Tascam people, ask them to put down their slide rules and surge meters and make machines and instruction manuals that speak to their customers--people who make music.
Thanks for the comment Erik, I plan to exactly what you just described. We are in the process of setting up a studio to facilitate the process. Don't really need one to do so, but it makes the process go smoother if you have a nice layout and you're not constantly moving, plugging, unplugging gear all the time. Pretty well along the way in the process and I'm about to post a video on how we constructed our bass traps. Hopefully we can inspire.
Maybe call it the MUSICIAN'S Guide to Tascam. "I'm going to show you how the Tascam recorder will ENERGIZE and ASSIST you in the creation of songs and in the capture great music. Joe, If you do this, Ta-scam, I mean Tascam, should pay you six figures for handling the job their marketing department didn't do.
Hi Joe, yes, so thankful for your tutorials. Joe, I have a question. I must have done something, but I do not know what I did. But, right now, this is the situation. I record a track or tracks. I go to mixdown, setting my volume levels. I go into auto master. Then, when in auto master, on both natural and maximum, the output volume level is booming above what I had set the volume levels at. My eq's are all off. Anyway, I would be grateful for any help. Thankyou.
Really helpful thanks. I'd like to input music from a separate source i.e. a CD player, or PC sound card L/R stereo. How would I do this please? Thanks.
Hey there...once you hsve a track down, how easy is it to transfer the track onto a computer? If i wanted to make a song i wanted to post on Instagram, could you please explain how i could do that? Please and thank you 🙏
HELP! I have a mastered song complete and I have tried taking it from the recorder to a computer with various different USB cables due to I don't have the original cable that came with the recorder and it will not work nothing pops up using Windows 10 on the computer at all and nothing pops up on a bigger better more expensive up-to-date computer as well. I cannot figure this out I just want to share this song but I cannot do that until it gets off that recorder. any thoughts or is there a certain cable that will only work with this recorder that came with it that I just don't have?
I have had that problem and mentioned it in a video. The cable has to be data capable. Failing that, just turn off the Tascam, take the card out and put it in a reader attached to the computer. (Edit, most computers have an sd slot built in.)
I have a drum machine, would it be possible to plug it into this and record directly through it? If so what cable would I need and where would I plug it in? Thank you so much for making this by the way, there’s so few videos on this thing and it looks great.
Almost certainly, you would most likely just use 1/4" instrument cables, most drum machines have 1/4" line out jacks. Then you would plug into the Tascam's 1/4" inputs, get your gain set and record to 2 channels. Of course If you like you could just record to 1 channel. Thanks.
So, I borrowed one of these from a friend, and as far as I can tell, unless you get complicated and use the "bounce" function over and over, this is actually a 2 track recorder because it records on odd and even numbers whether you want to or not. Say, drums on track 1, guitar on track 2. Try to record vocals on track 3, and it records those vocals into your drums on track 1. Am I missing something?
I have an older DP-008 that I bought years ago but never used due to the dearth of tutorials (like this) and not having the patience to slog through the manual. How does this “EX” model differ from the earlier model? Is it worth upgrading to this? Btw, GREAT video!
The EX has Input effects (EQ, Compression, De-essing and Exciter) that you can apply to tracks as you record them. Mastering effects, same effects that you can apply after recording and mixdown. Stereo WAV Import so you can bring in pre-recorded stereo tracks. Thanks for watching. If you have any other questions ask away.
Rarely do UA-cam channel hosts reply to questions-much less so quickly. Thanks!! Would you say that your tutorials can apply to the DP-008 (as far as the recording process) other than the new features you mentioned above?
You're welcome, thanks for watching! Yes the 008 and the EX are the same otherwise and the majority of the videos will apply. If you look at the Playlist here...ua-cam.com/play/PLLggLUPHVoiPzTDd76u78ISh13HN7IMgm.html All of the functions are listed in the description on the left. Look for any function you need to learn and go to the video it's in. Go to that video and in it's description you'll find the chapter timestamps so you can go straight to what you're looking for.
Great advice. I recorded an acoustic track to one of the internal mics, but I can only hear via headphones. Can I play it back and listen without headphones? And yes, I'm greener than grass when it comes to recording.
I'll start off by assuming that you are using the rca line outs into some type of amp to speakers or powered speakers? Make sure that the master level on the Tascam is turned up and carefully turn up the track level.
Awesome video! On mine, I set it up accordingly, I could see the meter jumping when I clapped, after recording a few test claps, there was no playback. Almost like it didn’t record. Any ideas?
Be sure you are pressing the record button first and then the play button, then make sure that the light is lit on the record button. You might think you are recording when you really aren't.
That was it! The record button didn’t light. Tried it again and bingo! Thanks so much! And thanks for taking the time to make these videos. They are extremely helpful!
You're welcome! That was the first mistake I made when I got mine. That's why in my videos I make it a point to say "Hold down record, then press play". Thanks
Menu Erase Check song(s) Execute Speakers depend on your budget, how much would you spend? Probably the cheapest decent monitors would be around $100 new.
And last question does it have to be a two sided RCA or can you use one side RCA out to a 1/8 Bluetooth speaker because I can't get anything to play back for me
Hello, i speak inglish just a litlle, so.... Ihave a question. When you recording a voice or an acustic guitar in stereo ( with the internal mics) the machine put this in a one track or two tracks??? band other, you can rec an acustic guitar in mono or stereo using one or two internal microphones or just one option??? thanks man
Doing research I am barely getting into audio and I want to do a podcast could you record 3 inputs of microphone I herd something in the beginning about 2 channel A & B, more clarification
2 at a time is the max. I would recommend a usb mixer for a beginner. Even a Behringer or Mackie would do nicely. Just make sure you get enough xlr inputs (4 would be what you would typically find available) and that it has usb out. Then just plug it in anything, even your phone, open a recorder and mix it all up and export. Any other questions, ask away.
I wanted to ask you a question. I can't hear my recording on my head phones. I can hear the preloaded recording song though. BUT, anything I recorded I can't hear. I'm old 66 so technology is not my friend. What can I connect this machine to to hear externally the recording so I can play along with it to get the next track TIGHT?! I don't have fancy equipment monitors etc. I have a unit I used to connect to my Android phone via 1/8th inch imput that has a amp volume and tone controls that I used to listen to UA-cam music videos to so I could play along with songs. Can this be plugged into the phones jack and I could listen that way? If you could help with some advice I would be very grateful! Thanks Ray Boston Massachusetts
Thanks for the video!! It's been really helpful. I do have a problem though. I am using a Fender Strat with a Line 6 Spider IV 120 for an amp. I connected my amp's line out into the tascam's line in A for jack cords. As we speak, there is no sound coming out of my speakers, nor my amp and nothing got recorded. Can you help please? :D
Things I can think of... Make sure that the cable you are using is the correct one. Make sure that the track that you are using has the correct letter assigned to it, A or B, and that Input Setting is set to External Input/ Line/ Low. If that doesn't solve it, see if you can plug the amp into something else like a powered speaker, mixer or stereo and check if it will work through something else.
One other thought, the Line 6 output may be stereo, if so, using a single mono cable out could negate the signal. My Boss Katana is like that, so to record with it, I use an 1/8" stereo to two mono 1/4" splitter and use one or both external inputs on the Tascam. Or I plug the two mono jacks into a splitter that combines the 2 channels back into a single mono 1/4".
There's no pause, but you can simply hit Stop and then start back up again without rewinding. It's bound to be a tricky move and will probably take some practice. Thanks for watching.
@@StudioonaStick Hey, thanks for the quick reply. I am thinking of purchasing the DP008EX and noticed that the my trio is 24 bit. I was not sure if I could record direct from the trio to the Tascam. BTW, your videos are very good. You know your stuff!!
Thanks! Two possible options. First option. (Easiest) Plug the line out of the Trio into a line in of the Tascam, arm that track and start recording on the Tascam, play the Trio loop/sequence live into the Tascam. Second option. Record the loop/sequence to the Trio sd card. Convert the file to 16 bit 44khz with an app or program (there are even online options) import file to the Tascam.
ps - i love the internal mics.....but you get a lot of noise turning them off if you are dropping in for a part .....i think it must be worth getting the footswitch
I have gotten pretty familiar with the interface by now, my problem is getting the levels right. I am plugging in an acoustic with pickup directly in. Between the TRIM on input A/B level on the device, the volume on the track, then the guitar, then the MASTER volume, it is always off. It's always clipping, but when I lower the input volume, then I can barely hear it. The Master volume seems useless, even at max I can barely hear it. Is there a tutorial on getting the levels just right?
Directly into the inputs. There is no send / return or effects loop. There are some decent reverbs assignable to any or all channels. There's also compression with several presets or manual threshold, ratio, attack and release settings available to a single channel. Also an exciter, and a de-esser.
These little tascams are workhorses. We just recorded our album using one of these. @MNDTRVLRMUSIC Used the built-in mics for the drums in stereo and then tracked the guitars, bass, vocals separately. It is definitely possible to get a decent sounding demo or album with just this and maybe some mastering after for that final touch. Highly recommended 👌
I got the internal mic to pickup my test sounds while recording, but there is no playback sound in my headphones or mixer when i switch. What am i doing wrong?
@@StudioonaStick I hit the play and record button at the same time.I have a recording i can see the meter on tascam lighting up when i hit play.I dont get it.The rca jacks in back of recorder go to mixing board but i get no sound.I currently have my computer sound going to my mixing board and i have sound no problem. There is something amiss here.
Make sure the output "Master" and the track faders on the Tascam are turned up, (obvious, and you probably already did.) Try a different channel strip on the mixer? Maybe you are in a channel that is usb/2 track and you need to depress the button?
How do you remove a dub over? For instance, if I record a rhythm guitar part then I record a solo over it then decided I don't like the solo. How do I remove it?
@@StudioonaStick "Shure" passive mic trying to record a cajon. By itself it will pickup fine. I have 4 other channels recorded. I test the volume on the cajon and it is OK. When I start playing the other 4 channels with the red light on the cajon channel, it no longer picks up a signal Even if I tap the head of the mic it won't pick up a signal. I tried other channels too but no luck. Kind of strange. I'll have to try micing just the cajon and recording. thx
I will double check. I'm a pretty smart guy but do dumb things sometimes. I may make a short video clip to explain better if the gain isn't the issue. thx.
I went through your video but I can't seem to record with my electric kit. A Roland td17. Are some of these tascam recorders not compatible with electric kits? Does anybody know

First Timer on this and I really appreciate your instructions. I had an XLR and a line in on input B. Uh, no. Found out that was not possible. One at a time is good! :) Thanks so much.
You're welcome! Glad it's helping.
Very detailed...Thanks sir
Thanks! You're welcome.
Fantastic tutorial, cheers.
Thanks for making it easy.
Hoping someone can help me on this ? SD card in and formatted.
I have created the song space,
Using the internal mic low, with headphones I can hear my singing or tapping, arm track 1 and hit play & record.
On playback there's nothing.
And of course the monitor volume up. What am I missing please ??? Thanks
Make sure you check Input Assign, A/B
Then make sure the red light is on when you are "recording".
I have failed at that a few times and now I consciously press and hold Record first and then press play.
awesome tutorial, thank you
Joe, I'm a musician and as writer, not a techie.
Thanks for the comment Erik,
I plan to exactly what you just described.
@@StudioonaStick Thanks, Joe!
Thankyou.
Thank you for your excellent help
(Edit, most computers have an sd slot built in.)
....great video info ... Good Tips , how to avoid disasters...!!!... The manual can't beat that !!!....haha
Thanks.
@@StudioonaStick thank you! Gonna give this a try.
YOU ~ ROCK ! ! 👍
The EX has
Input effects (EQ, Compression, De-essing and Exciter) that you can apply to tracks as you record them.
If you look at the Playlist here...ua-cam.com/play/PLLggLUPHVoiPzTDd76u78ISh13HN7IMgm.html
All of the functions are listed in the description on the left.
@@StudioonaStick I'll do that. Thanks mate.
Thank you
You're welcome
thanks..very useful
Glad it was helpful!
And thanks!
Thanks
Can you copy and paste on here? Can u shorten you recordings like cut the white noise of the beginning and ends of my recordings
Yes, you can do both.
Great job.
Thanks!
how to delete on the tascam dp-006 ? and what kind of speakers can we purchase in stead of using the headphones ? please
Menu
Erase
Check song(s)
Execute
Speakers depend on your budget, how much would you spend?
Probably the cheapest decent monitors would be around $100 new.
thank you that worked , can you send me a link for speakers please thank you

FUCKIN THANK YOU!!! I was getting so angry but you made it so simple!!!
And last question does it have to be a two sided RCA or can you use one side RCA out to a 1/8 Bluetooth speaker because I can't get anything to play back for me
The 1/8" on the speaker is most likely stereo, so I would go dual RCA to trs 1/8" so you can hear both outputs.
Thanks for watching.
is there a video on how to use the copy paste, copy insert functions?
Copy paste yes, I'm going to do one on copy insert.
@@StudioonaStick thanks for your replies!

Hello, i speak inglish just a litlle, so.... Ihave a question. When you recording a voice or an acustic guitar in stereo ( with the internal mics) the machine put this in a one track or two tracks??? band other, you can rec an acustic guitar in mono or stereo using one or two internal microphones or just one option??? thanks man
One or two, you choose by arming one or two and selecting the given mic. Same for question 2. Thanks!

I'm liking this, it's worth a look.
i have the DP03 - am very happy with it - can you tell me if having the sliders/faders is the only diffrence between the 2 different 8 tracks ? thnx
The 3 is a really nice machine.
It has a lot more features on the control surface, less menu diving than the others.
Thanks for watching.
Thanks Ray

You are my go to for my tascam 8 track👍👍 how come when I undo or edit/erase a track, it defaults to my b channel
@@StudioonaStick I do get sound if Input it on external line HIGH though
Try switching the switch on the back between Mic/Line and Guitar, if you already haven't.
Can you pause the song while recording if you are a little off step or have to catch your breath or something
There's no pause, but you can simply hit Stop and then start back up again without rewinding. It's bound to be a tricky move and will probably take some practice.
Thanks for watching.
So I have a Trio band creator. Is it possible to import like a 12 bar blues bass and drum track to the tascam?
Not import, but direct record. Plug the Trio output into a line input on the Tascam and record the loop.
(Easiest)
Plug the line out of the Trio into a line in of the Tascam,
arm that track and start recording on the Tascam,
play the Trio loop/sequence live into the Tascam.
Second option.
Record the loop/sequence to the Trio sd card.
Convert the file to 16 bit 44khz with an app or program (there are even online options)
import file to the Tascam.
ps - i love the internal mics.....but you get a lot of noise turning them off if you are dropping in for a part .....i think it must be worth getting the footswitch
They work great, I like them too.
Footswitch is cheap enough, I use the Amazon brand and it works perfectly.
Thanks for watching.

Very helpful!! Thank you!!
Where can you plug an fx pedal into this?
Directly into the inputs. There is no send / return or effects loop.
There are some decent reverbs assignable to any or all channels.
There's also compression with several presets or manual threshold, ratio, attack and release settings available to a single channel.
Also an exciter, and a de-esser.
super helpful!
Most excellent.
Thanks!
Not clear on your set up. Make sure you are firmly pressing the record button, and then the play button, let me know...
@@StudioonaStick That was my problem, i didn't see the master.Tech support fixed it for me.It's been years since i used a recorder.

How do you remove a dub over? For instance, if I record a rhythm guitar part then I record a solo over it then decided I don't like the solo. How do I remove it?
Say I recorded a track I was happy with, then another track over top that I didn’t like. How would I delete it?
Can't get it to pickup anything percussive. Is there a trick or just won't do it?
What are you mici’ing? What mic are you using?
@@StudioonaStick "Shure" passive mic trying to record a cajon. By itself it will pickup fine. I have 4 other channels recorded. I test the volume on the cajon and it is OK. When I start playing the other 4 channels with the red light on the cajon channel, it no longer picks up a signal Even if I tap the head of the mic it won't pick up a signal. I tried other channels too but no luck. Kind of strange. I'll have to try micing just the cajon and recording. thx
Are you sure you have the gain up enough on the input?
I will double check. I'm a pretty smart guy but do dumb things sometimes. I may make a short video clip to explain better if the gain isn't the issue. thx.

how do i cut a song from 045-1:30??? like cut that whole section out?
Hi, We should ask to Tascam to introduce an update to system, may be useful the possibility to visualize the "time" in Bars and Beats and not only with hh:mm:ss:ff
Cool idea but I'm not sure if they could make the existing display do that.
