Spot on! Tremendous thought provoking podcast. New listener, following on youtube now. I have been fishing Lake Ontario salmon for 40 years and have the best and worst of it.
here some info for you .. of the 28000+ chinooks that went over the dam in fall of 2023. 26% were 1 year olds. 65% were 2 year olds and 9 % were 3 year olds.. these numbers are rounded up there were some 4 year olds but not many
I didn't hear "Canadian Lake Trout" mentioned once. If I was a US angler, I would be pissed right off on how much Lake Trout the MNR is polluting the lake with the trout nobody wants to catch. Twice as many Lake Trout plants than mishandled Chinook? And after 25", yeah Canadian Lake Trout start stuffing themselves on the Alewife & Smelt that should be going to Kings. The decline on salmon size mirrors the increase of Ontario Lake Trout stocking. Shocker, Lake Michigan is now the King of Kings on the Great Lakes. guess which lake doesn't share a border with Ontario?
I would like to add another interesting discuss point. Lake superior is having the opposite happening. Years passed chinooks on superior were smaller than lake o's, now superior is experiencing matures nearing 40lbs. Genetics? Cycle? Natural reproduction? More forage bait?

Fantastic. Thanks for your work. Do you know which genetic strain is stocked in the put and take? Do they have tyee genetics?
agreed
The 80's was great fishing...but almost every fish had Lampreys
That's interesting. I did realize it got that out of hand.
