Salmon snaggers and poachers on Lake Ontario Tributaries - Where do we go from here?
With the closure of the Ganaraska River to fishing until October 15th, questions swirl with regards to where poachers will go next. Fall is always a popular time to witness some of the most badly behaved in peak form, and this year has been no exception.
Still, what can we as anglers do?
In this podcast I discuss the problems that salmon face during their annual migration, and the problems that law abiding anglers are faced with when witnessing these crimes.
I also touch on the dangers of generalizing the behaviours of those who are depicted as clearly in the wrong, emphasizing that immigration and conduct issues are separate discussions from fishing ethics discussion that anglers can actually contribute to.

Relaxing River Carp Waggler Fishing - ASMR

Join me for a relaxing fish on a local river in the late-spring for some waggler fishing. I target carp, rudd, and goldfish in a 4 hour sprint. I did not include all of the fish that were landed, but as you can see it was a special morning! I am using a 9'6 medium light trout rod with 6 lb CXX monofilament line. The waggler I am using took about 4 grams of weight total. I have been enjoying spr...

Awesome. Really intrigued by the waggler. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for your help today . This worked well today … do you use plastic or glass Thank u
This was great, my rule of thumb is follow roygbiv accordingly to how much interference the water is having that day, whether its chop, and overcast skies. Fish will change their colors to adapt to their environment. For example kings or cohos will tend to have an olive green/blue back looking down on top to match the, and a silver white belly looking up.
Nice work my guy, can you show how you would apply a yarn to this or a bead
Deport these poachers.
Hey we can't do anything that would be racist! Diversity is our Strength!
Great video Lyle! thanks for spreading awareness
the thing is, they dont "think" they're above the rules; our politicians literally tell them and demonstrate that they are above the rules.
I'm old enough to be your grampa son.Been seein this stuff goin down since they first started stocking the lake w/ salmon, heck, the DNR encouraged snagging initially! Aint got nothin to do w/ any immigrants, white trash been doin it from the start and still do...
Waste a resource not correct the problem arrest the riff who pays to have all the fish cleaned just like you said Not your problem
Fish spond on gravel beds not limestone shelfs
All Invasive Ethnic Garbage is criminal. Why do you struggle with an accurate judgement. It is what they are, not a temporary condition.
Great video Lyle. Its good to raise awareness about these issues.
First off, great video. hit the nail on the head on this issue. I agree with your idea of the implementation of "tags" on certain fish or even rivers. Further adding to your idea of the tag system, it can be a double positive in potentially opening a catch-and-release season for Sturgeon after all these decades of it being closed.
Excellent podcast Lyle ! I'm so glad you posted this one about how our great fisheries are being abused. You're too polite although I understand why. I'm not far from the Cobourg site and as a real fisherman as many are , we all do our utmost to maintain our fisheries to the best of our abilities, but seeing this kind of activity more than pisses me off. I don't care who , what colour they are or what language they speak , wrong is wrong and these folks , even though they've been told snagging and netting is illegal they continue to do it with no regards for the law. Out here (east of TO) I'm told as you mentioned that the MNR manpower is lacking so yeah , maybe tags for individual rivers may be good but at the very least , post more signs saying "No snagging or netting etc. The MNR told my friend they didn't have anyone to send to Duffins Creek and to call the cops, he did and they said there wasn't anything they could do !! This I think ought to be fixed asap Anyway Lyle , thank you for posting this again and bringing this outrageous behavior to the attention of many more people Cheers Mike
I'm glad you touched on the fact that in many folks native countries, snagging/netting can be common practice. Catching and releasing fish can be frowned upon as a senselessy lost opportunity to feed families. I know lots of other nations cringe seeing fish released after being angled. I think finding a way to educate and better spread awareness about the fish and our laws is important. In many cases extreme patience and sensitivity is required before we jump to conclusions about poor angling practices. But we definitely have to keep working together to better protect our fishery and I hope we are heading in a better direction for the future of the fishery. I'm glad to see so many anglers putting in their time and effort to expose how bad the issues really are.
White is the last color to be seen deep
Haha....good job Brandon....
Great video, Lyle. Very informative. Do you have a video on the basic line rigging (leader/float setup, soup to nuts) for salmon and steelhead for drift fishing?
I don't get the "spots" thing...can you explain more? Who determines who "owns" a spot? If two guys find the same spot in practice...?
I didn't hear "Canadian Lake Trout" mentioned once. If I was a US angler, I would be pissed right off on how much Lake Trout the MNR is polluting the lake with the trout nobody wants to catch. Twice as many Lake Trout plants than mishandled Chinook? And after 25", yeah Canadian Lake Trout start stuffing themselves on the Alewife & Smelt that should be going to Kings. The decline on salmon size mirrors the increase of Ontario Lake Trout stocking. Shocker, Lake Michigan is now the King of Kings on the Great Lakes. guess which lake doesn't share a border with Ontario?
I would like to add another interesting discuss point. Lake superior is having the opposite happening. Years passed chinooks on superior were smaller than lake o's, now superior is experiencing matures nearing 40lbs. Genetics? Cycle? Natural reproduction? More forage bait?
here some info for you .. of the 28000+ chinooks that went over the dam in fall of 2023. 26% were 1 year olds. 65% were 2 year olds and 9 % were 3 year olds.. these numbers are rounded up there were some 4 year olds but not many
Spot on! Tremendous thought provoking podcast. New listener, following on youtube now. I have been fishing Lake Ontario salmon for 40 years and have the best and worst of it.
Fantastic. Thanks for your work. Do you know which genetic strain is stocked in the put and take? Do they have tyee genetics?
agreed
Great info package for a newbie! Keep it up.
The 80's was great fishing...but almost every fish had Lampreys
That's interesting. I did realize it got that out of hand.
Great video! I have these lakes and Rankin River very high on my "to do" list.
Lyle, I have been jigging lakers in northern Ontario for a few years. I prefer hunting for fish rather than trolling for them. I have had best luck on my home made tube jigs. This year is my first year back at salmon since 90's. Yes I am trolling but keep wondering why are we not jigging? Thanks for the encouragement! I fish near Bowmanville.
Really nice to come across this. I spent much time as a youth on the harbour fishing for various species, but the channel cats were always a thrill. You certainly had some success, and they are sure an exciting fish. As an aside, i think as a young lad you might have been a friend of my father, who died in 2003... went by his middle-name, Digby.
@@squirrel-eatingjon2514 hey there, I remember Digby fondly. My dad and I would go visit and help with appointments groceries etc. He always had stickers or little toys for me when I'd see him. Hope you are well!
@@lylegayder One of the subjects that came up often in my chats with dad in his later years (i had been in Alberta for years by then) was this lad "Lyle." He always spoke of you with the greatest delight, about how much he enjoyed knowing you. I remember this distinctly, as there were not very many kids he bothered to mention at all. You made an impression on the old man and difference in his life. I am grateful for that. You are Freda's nephew, no(?) Pardon my memory, as you know it's been years. I was always very fond of Freda, we stayed in touch regularly on the phone until she passed, and i would visit her when i was in the area. Anyways, i was just surfing youtube to see if anyone out there made a focus of catching channel cats at Jordan. Enjoyed the vid very much and then saw your name and thought "No way!!!" So brought back more memories watching this than i anticipated. I am doing very well out here, yes, thanks for asking. It's great to see folks with the passion of yourself and your friends (you are in good company!) really making something beyond the average of it. That's where a person needs to focus their life indeed - on their passions. If you're ever out Alberta way feel free to give me a shout, i live in some nice country with lots of great outdoors and good trout waters. A good bud of mine is also very keen on catching sturgeon in the southeast of the province, something on my own bucket list. Thanks, Lyle. - Jon
Great content! Been doing this a long time along the West Michigan Coast...do you remember what the surface temp was that night?
Great to see you back making videos Lyle !! That was a nice laker buddy !!
Thanks Mike!! Glad to have the opportunity to make this one...busy these days!
This looks like a ton of fun. What rod would you recommend?
7 to 7.5 ft medium heavy spinning setup. 3000 size spinning reel and high vis yellow braided line. This gives you enough backbone but enough feel to work the jig
Living the dreaaaaam
I love Half Hitch tackle in Panama and Destin Florida The tourists locations “the cities) are great places to go and feel bad about spending your money because you get treated horribly BUT AT HALF HITCH I always get treated with respect like a family member 😍😍😍 so avoid the rest and spend your money at Half Hitch who also has online store.
What lure are you using please?
The "Don't worry I got it" line at the end was hilarious. I use it too. Or if someone's being really loud ill say. "There's a hammer in my bag if you wanna use that instead" Thanks for the great video. I enjoyed watching it.
I enjoyed the fish ID game, bring Faith back for more
Great info- where did you ordere that colored map from?
Just making the connection. Good to talk to you today at the Niagara Fishing Tackle Swap. Keep up the good work. !
I would like to know where I could purchase glow tape for a flasher. Thanks
Peter's Tackle in St. Catharines has lots as does Grimsby Tackle in Grimsby. There is also the option to buy online at luremaking.com
@lylegayder Thanks, my brother. Be well and be safe.
Interesting. I think i will look into it
WARNING: It's addicting haha
That's one epic day's fishing, Lyle! 1st time I've seen European style coarse fishing practiced in the USA or Canada, with great competence I might add! you obviously have some great waters out there. Carp are probably the most popular fish in the UK but their distribution tends to be concentrated in heavily stocked and fished "commercial" day permit ponds, or in exclusive syndicate owned private lakes. Carp angling is a separate branch of UK fishing really, with waggler enthusiasts (a smaller, older and maybe eccentric group 🤣) tending to target the smaller, wilder fish such as Roach, Rudd, Perch Bream etc. Fascinating to see the evolution of these styles across the pond. very nice Rudd there too (???) mid winter here now and getting interesting content for utube fishing is challenging 🤣Have a great new year, subbed 👍👍
Many thanks Soultrader. These are all "wild" fish with many interesting hybrids caught each session. We often catch rudd mixed in with brown goldfish / f1 and ornamental goldfish as well as the odd mirror and ghosties. Studying and practicing this discipline has taught me many important lessons that have transferred to the other styles of fishing I do and guide. I'm not sure any eccentric admits to be one too frequently, but, there is a spot in my heart for the waggler!
Dont get me wrong ! Theres plenty of float enthusiasts here but those of us who prefer the smaller wilder fish (carp are mostly hatchery reared here) or "silvers" tend to be thought of as eccentric! 👍
A perfect day out there!
Birds chirping, no wind, and bitey fish.
Great that you are fishin european stule in usa !!! Didnt think no one does it there
We have a small following here in southern Ontario Canada. I'm one of the youngest that fishes this style locally in Niagara and love it very much. Glad this view reached across the pond!
You werent kidding that bite was fire
It sure was! Nothing like a corn bite
