I don't know. The first 2 seasons were great, and this one started off fine until after episode 5. The writers just can't give any wins to Ed. Could of landed on the Moon, but didn't (yes I know Apollo 10 wasn't supposed to), Loses his wife, Could of landed on Mars, but didn't, daughter hates him, and now drilled for water, but that the writers took that away from him also. They just can't give one win to the veteran white guy, has to be the NASA diversity crew wins each and every time this season. Now, that I finished my rant I will say that it's still a good show, but I'm seeing cracks forming this season.

Theory and my guess on how episodes 8-10 will go, inspired from what people have been saying on the FAM subreddit.
      It's long
The drill is destroyed. Everyone at Helios base at the time of the disaster dies besides Ed, Danny, a few survivors (including Alexei for plot purposes) and the other guy who made it to hab 2. The MSAM is damaged beyond repair. Ed says something to Danny before passing out and Danny realises the severity of the situation, using whatever basic medical expertise he has from astronaut training to prevent further blood loss and keeps Ed alive for as long as possible. The NASA crew is devastated but cannot help because of a dust storm caused by the event. The reservoir of subsurface liquid water is inaccessible. The North Korean probe enters Mars orbit, and detects another site with water-ice near or within Valles Marineris. This data is shared with NASA, Roscosmos and Helios. NASA crew uses their mining equipment to mine and convert the water-ice to clean, drinkable water for the crew and whatever greenhouse they happen to have. A few days later, Aleida is at home “having a break”. Having heard the news, she drafts an idea to get the crew and supplies from Phoenix down to the surface. She does the calculations and experiments needed for such a plan and it would work. She goes to work and proposes the idea to Margo. Margo disapproves, but she tells her engineering team at NASA to find a way to fix the nuclear engines using what’s left on Mars. Back on Mars, all three crews receive instructions on how to recover supplies and crew from Phoenix. They get to work to refuel Sojourner 1, make fixes to the nuclear engines that should get them running (barely). Either Ed, Dani or Danny will fly Sojourner One to Phoenix. Danny volunteers and has to be a hero again. Sojourner One lights it’s still functional VTOL engines and ascends as far as possible. Once halfway in Martian orbit and on track to rendezvous with Phoenix, the VTOL engines (which may just be conventional hydrogen-oxygen engines, that’s what i think they are) shuts down with just enough fuel to land again. He attempts to start the nuclear engines, fails. Attempts again, fails. Attempts the 3rd time, it ignites. However, Sojourner 1 falls just short of Mars orbit because the repaired engine bell could not handle the heat and is permanently and irreparably damaged. Danny, still on track to intercept with Phoenix, asks Phoenix crew to match velocity with the remaining fuel. This manoeuvre puts both spacecraft on a collision course with Martian surface but gives both spacecraft 30mins to transfer as much cargo and crew as possible. They transfer all the crew and as much supplies as possible to Sojourner. Sojourner’s trajectory makes them overshoot both Helios and NASA bases but Danny performs a nosedive, taking them a few hundred metres away from NASA base, making all the crew but him pass out and some of the instruments on Sojourner fail from over-g. Danny crash lands on Mars but him, the crew and some of the cargo survive. (implied in the title of Episode 10), someone might have a child on Mars, most likely Kelly and Alexei. Political trouble on Earth (caused by both Larry’s scandal and Margo’s disclosure of confidential information to the KGB) causes budget cuts at NASA (Helios no longer has any contracts from the gov so they don’t have money) and Roscosmos gets budget cuts due to the failure of Mars 94. What’s left of three crews have to live on Mars and the season ends bittersweetly with part of the crew dead and the remainder having to survive on mars (with cargo shipments from NASA and Roscosmos every 2 years).
Post credit scene or ending of episode 10: In the 21st century (2004 because I like Green Day and it is a Mars transfer window), NASA and Roscosmos prepare to launch a joint mission to recover the cosmonauts and astronauts on mars. Everything looks great and the rocket carrying the rescue team/spacecraft lifts off but they transition to the same launch on a television. (2000s metal music cuts here) The television (possibly a 8K OLED in 2004 due to the advanced technology progression) cuts to a breaking news feed, saying that terrorists (maybe the same group involved in 9/11 attacks) have just bombed Jamestown and Zvezda. Cutting back to JSC mission control, the mission controllers have just seen the news and they are trying to focus on the rocket launch instead of the news. The rocket reaches space and is entering orbit, but suddenly we see a object (projectile/interceptor) approaching the rocket or spacecraft at extremely high speed on live feed. We hear a scream from the crew for a second, live feed goes black and there is a loss of signal.
i think what i’ve said actually happening is very unlikely, but i like toying with the idea of a rather dark ending.

PJ being able to walk up to the people in the base implies that PJ is pretty advanced for the time. PJ's real-world contemporaries don't seem to have some kind of program to make them walk intentionally to people, but just roam around. Maybe artificial intelligence technology has gotten somehow a little advanced compared to our own to allow PJ to have a program to act like a living puppy...

@@mmabri I disagree about the "wins". I think we've seen through the series was that Ed was an honorable character that people still respect and which he himself commands respect. I don't think his character is written in such a way as to disadvantage him completely. I feel the writers are setting him up for a tragedy, and I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing character-wise.

So let me get this straight. Ed caught Danny high, and was straight up insubordinate to him to the point of almost coming to blows. But lets not only keep him on duty, but put him on monitoring an important thing that will cause the drill to not blow up.

I was absolutely furious when Ed didn't completely ground Danny for his continued insubordination. It's just ridiculous writing to say that Ed would've just slapped danny on the wrist for his actions especially given his military serve. I love this series to death, but what the hell kind of creative storytelling is that.

I totally agree with you! IRL, on such a sensitive, potentially deadly, Mars mission, someone like Danny would've been under house arrest, confined to quarters, locked up, until he could be sent home. He's a danger to the everyone on the team and a threat to the success of the mission. This part of the storyline is so fabricated, so fake, and irritating. So Hollywoodified.

Season 1 was Deke Slayton, season 2 was gordo and Tracy, and this season will more than likely be someone on the Mars mission, probably ed since he's pretty old and he wouldn't have much of a purpose in season 4

a very small but important detail, Ed tells Danny "you don't think i've seen a pilot on go pills before?", go pills are stimulants used by pilots to stay alert for extended periods during missions, having served in Korea he associated the effects of the oxy with severe exhaustion caused by overworking rather than abusing medication, taking that into consideration it made sense to take him off flight duties instead of removing him from the crew entirely, also go pills were officially banned in the early 2000's in our timeline so it's possible they are in use in the FAM timeline

    • @PetePeppers1

That's an interesting observation. Since we know what Danny is up to I hadn't thought about Ed misinterpreting what was wrong with him. Doesn't really make me like the decision more, but it does mean that he may have reacted differently if he knew he was mixing opioids and speed.

    Some thoughts about this episode:
    - Ed should have relieved Danny of his duty and send him back to Phoenix. Keeping Danny on Mars any longer will endanger the safety of all astronauts. The ending proves this. If Ed dies from his injuries, then it's his faults for not taking Danny's reckless actions seriously.
    - The whole conspiracy thing with Jimmy and his "friends" is cringe. We can clearly see that Jimmy hasn't got over the deaths of his parents yet. He's a timid, shy and depressed person. His friends are just using him. And also, why is he living at his sister-in-law's house? He's got an IT job, then he should have no problems making enough money to rent a appartement. He's better than that, and he really needs help.
    - Margo will soon be exposed by Aleida. Aleida is determined this time, and she will not stop until she finds out who the traitor is.
    - Larry did a very stupid thing, and that could cost his wife and the Republican party the chance to win in 1996. Having a affair is bad enough, but having a affair with a White house staff while your wife is the President of the United States and lying to Congress afterward is unimagineable.
    - How couldn't NASA, with all of their rovers, landers, orbiters and scientists, detect the presence of a huge lake on Mars, while the Soviets can? It seems hard to believe.
    - There's no way Ellen could turn up to the house of a citizen in the middle of the night like that (and Pam seems really surprise). Everywhere POTUS goes, the Secret Service will always be one step ahead to check for threats. At the very least, Secret Service agents would have block the street, surround the house and notify the residents of the POTUS's arrival. An also, journalists would be surrounding the site. Being a president, you can't just walk up to a private home like that without the whole world knowing.
    - We can see that Ed's decision to take Danny along is a mistake. It has to do with Ed being a test pilot. He does dangerous things, takes risks, thinks quick and hopes for the best. But now, it seems that he has ran out of luck. Taking Danny along is a risky endevour, and now it pays off. I agree with Poole on her decision not to take Danny along. She plays by the book and follow guidelines, and now she's right.

While I understand that a lot of folks don’t understand why the show is turning so soap operay. But the full realization of the characters are realized by these storylines. The show as a whole is showing the full breath of this alt timeline. If we go back to the very beginning the Soviet landing is for me the US losing both the moon and the Vietnam War. The Russians too have become not an “old sick man” on his deathbed, but if you remember the Soviets under Gorbachev has turned into the dominate economist power. You might have noticed they know have influence in every sector of the world except Western Europe and the US and Canada. As an old guy I remember well when Cuba was under Soviet control. Now imagine Mexico, Central America South America and all of the Far East. We were crazy nuts from 1946-1990 with a never as strong as they seemed Soviets. This dread over casts everything.
As for Ed the loss of his son is something a man like him never “makes peace” with and only become a deeper and eventually overwhelming completely dipilitataing “disease” not unlike cancer. At this stage Ed is so crippled every decision is going to be a bad one. Staying too long with a bad choice is a prime example. I think FAM is one of the finest shows written. One last thing about ALL the characters. Everybody’s in control…until they’re not. And we are close to that point.

About the water - Helios’s drill is shot, but NASA came to look for water and obviously they have the ability to drill, so they may be the only hope for all of them. The whole Helios-USSR agreement goes out the window and NASA is in the driver’s seat.
Ed lost a lot of the traction he had gained by confusing picking a fight with Danny over disciplining him. It seems that his tough guy, test pilot persona leads him to do stupid things. Compare with Dani (although her deciding to land in a storm and subsequently wrecking the ship was not the best move). The NASA crew has kept on task.

This season = soap opera in space. Any mistake has an exaggerated effect. Simple, but interesting issues could be used for plot conflict but instead each issue is blown up into an unbelievable issue. It's concerning because these decisions seem to be made in the plot writing process and not post-film or with editing which means the writers could be running out of good ideas or are making the wrong decisions.

So sad to see the person that I really really love and respect giving away information to the Russians, it’s been heartbreaking to watch. I wished this episode spent more time on Mars and less with the Earth subplots. I'm curious on how such a small group of people could set up such a large drill that was somehow brought down from orbit. I know that finding water was a key part of the mission for everyone, but the size of that thing and its swift construction seems absurd. For such an undertaking there would have to be specialists such as hydrologists and drilling engineers. But maybe the lack of that expertise brought on the disaster that ended the episode?

Yeah Gordo fell pretty far, it just wasn't putting other in danger far. He also took himself out the the equation when he did start lossing it on Jamestown. Danny is turning into a legit psychopath, his obsession over Karen not helping either( still a super weird pairing). personal thoughts:
i think that everyone will be alive. BECAUSE:
    1. one of the scenes shows a moving cosmonaut in a dust storm, and for now we have not yet seen that scene, unlike others.
    2. its a dust storm, but i believe that the suits would be rather slightly damaged, than broken apart
    3. its 99.9 percent sure that danny will be... well... fucked in the next episode.
EDIT: i forgot to say: THERE WILL 100% SURE BE A SEASON 4!!! there has been a word from Apple that it will happen. but we don t know when it will begin or what it will be about.
i think that in season 4 there will be:
Orion capsule and the SLS, Due to the mentioned self-sufficiency of NASA
most likely a large colony on mars surface
Jamestown will most likely be abandoned (cmon man that station would be almost 40 years old at that point)
ive noticed something in the last 3 seasons.
season 1: very late 1960's and most of the 1970's
season 2: late 1970's and most of the 1980's
season 3: late 1980's and most of the 1990's...
i think you know where im going with this...
season 4: (most likely) late 1990's and most of the 2000's
Last note: season 4 will release most likely on Christmas 2022 or Summer 2023

I am worried that Danny might get away with everything if Nick dies as well. However part of me wants to believe that everything they do is logged electronically for "black box" like reconstruction if something large or small goes wrong. Meaning in this case the communications switch being switched on then off then back on would be logged chronologically along with all other sensor data related to the drilling mission. Now the data isn't going to show who flipped the switch so Danny could blame Nick but I dont think anyone would believe him. I just hope the show breaks from its normal trend of fast forwarding significantly in the next episode from where the previous episode left off because the events are too important to skip over or fast forward through.
I do have a feeling that if Danny is held accountable for his actions it will become the next "NASAnon" conspiracy (as Pete named it). They will say either he is being blamed & discredited because Dannys crew got too close to the truth or because he himself found out the truth.

  • @mclark42

Because this is such a great show, I never expected the writers make Ed do something so completely out of character and downright stupid as to allow an insubordinate drug user to monitor a critical operation. Danny is seen to be drugged and almost assaults Ed in front of the crew, but no one bothers to secure the pharmacy and Ed doesn't follow thru on his threat to confine him?!? At least the guy whose toy dog Danny smashed would have been wary enough not to turn his back on him during a potentially fatal drilling operation. Bad writing.

NASA-Anon, lol. Jimmy and his friends are so obnoxious; I really hope this storyline pays off. Why is Jimmy living with his sister-in-law when he apparently has a pretty good IT job?
It seems out of character for Ed to let Danny stay on the job when he's being erratic and insubordinate. During their argument I was sure Danny was about to blurt out that he's the one who slept with Karen. I still find it hard to believe that in all these years Ed has never badgered Karen into telling him who she slept with. Especially since Ed and Karen are still so close. Maybe she would lie, but I can't see Ed not caring to find out who it was.
I have a feeling the explosion on Mars will turn out to reveal some reservoir of underground life or some other big discovery.
I'm curious where the Ellen and Pam story goes. The world seems almost more homophobic than it was in the real 1990s. Maybe Ellen comes out, quits the presidency and joins Helios to go to Mars.

This whole show has gone off the rails. It was a space show with some good drama. Now it's a soap opera with space sprinkled on. In the previous episode, both crews looked crazy by committing to a landing during a dust storm. Are we expected to believe these trained professionals would risk the entire mission and the lives of their crew just to be 'first' ? I don't think so. I was willing to overlook that because the landing sequence was well done. But this episode just takes the biscuit. We're at Prometheus-level competency here. These people would have never been approved for spaceflight, let alone a mission to mars.

No emergency stop on a piece of drill equipment? Really? And why is the equipment not self contained like any piece of mobile equipment with no access to infrastructure would have to be? Would the writers of the show please move into the real world and maybe report for a visit to a factory floor or better still, a real world drilling operation? Other posters here have pointed out several of the many bad decisions the characters make for the writers to move the plot along. This has consistently been a turn off for me.I really think the premise of this show is genius, and the actor's performances are great, but the execution continues to let it down big time for me: A bit of random debris crippling and endangering a whole space station? Amateurs! I can't relate to any of the characters, they are tools for the writers random whims and genuinely unsympathetic to me. The Stevens brothers are obnoxious. Danny's only plot purpose is to set off a number of disasters. Gordo was never astronaut material. Ed was a crazed violent monster. The trope of humanity going into space and then going stir-crazy (but apparently only the menfolk ) is just so lame. That statue of Gordo and Tacy is so...... Soviet Union, third reich'y in it's ghastliness, and what is the point of removing it (other than it being ugly)?

How do you think larry and ellen had a kid? Was it artificial insemination or did they have the secks?

Probably they at least tried the 2nd - for political reasons.
The oval office is worth some occasional bouts of heterosexuality.
Artificial insemination, only if the old way didn't work out and they found a reasonable medical excuse to accede to the procedure.
Alternatively, adoption - if Ellen was fried barren by space radiation in her somewhat less than optimal travel to the moon .

What on Earth (rather, on Mars) has happened to the writing on this show? This episode is so badly written that I suspect someone has left an intern high on opioids and amphetamines in charge of writing it. Not counting leaving Lt. House MD in charge of a critical operation (pun intended, more on that later), how about: 1. why land the roundabout so far away from the sick bay when the commander of the entire damn thing is that badly injured? Instead let´s park far away and walk!!!! 2. No failsafe or backup controls ON THE DRILL? What kind of terrible design is that? If the witers want some clues on how to create a survival crisis, they can find it at the excellent series MARS (from having the commander die to finding water to running out of power to a crazy member of the crew screwing up and killing people). And, in closing: who is in charge of security at NASA? A couple of hippies comes in, steals a statue and gets away with it? Really? Seriously? Philip and Elisabeth could have sent Henry to extract information from that dumb Margo.

Pretty sure that's meant to be Karl Rove, not a Karl Rove-type..
