- Luciano Pavarotti sings Scarlatti's song, "Già, il sole dal Gange". This was recorded during a July 31, 1976 recital in Salzburg with Leone Magiera at the piano.

When we were freshmen in American college music programs, singers used to plod through tons of these simple little Italian baroque songs while dreaming of being allowed to sing Verdi and Puccini arias someday. Then we watched videos of Pavarotti singing "Tu lo sai," the simplest of them all, and it was a revelation. These little songs are full of nuance, longing and joy, and he never brought one bit less to them than he did to "Nessun dorma" or "Che gelida manina."
Finally! Someone that sings this like a real Italian...like he is. Love it!!!

The tone in his voice influences a feeling of warmth and depth that can't be captured, merely mimicked. Such a light, charismatic voice, that has flirtatious undertones which grasps the strings of my soul.
I'm heading to state for my solo and ensemble competition tomorrow, and this is one of my songs. I love hearing how he sings it, it brings so much joy!

Yes of course I've heard and seen him since the early 1970's and met him at a private party through a friend of his when I worked in radio in the 1960's and 1970's that comment I made in error! .@@The_juice132
While most of his better quality recordings were from the 80s to 90s, young Pavarotti's voice was truly something else. So naturally sharp and crisp.

What charm, what wealth of melody and tone. The pianist is remarkable. Two minutes of magical joy.
The pianist does a nice job--except for the wrong note near the very beginning, around 0:02. It really hurts.

I’ll be singing this for solo MPA. I have never heard this man sing before but his voice is quite joyous and puts a smile on my face. I hope to do the same for all that hear me sing this piece.

I learned my first aria 10 years ago. This one. Every time I had to sing this, I'd always try to channel my inner Pavarotti. Frankly I did that for every Italian aria I sang.
When it comes to tenors in Italian opera, I think Pavarotti is the gold standard.

The problem of using only the last name - Scarlatti - is that the family has a lot of composers... this piece is from Alessandro Scarlatti, father of Domenico Scarlatti, most known of the public.

I don't know this song at all, but just listening to it, it sounds like it's full of trills that he's glossing over.
But honestly, when you're Pavarotti, you can do whatever the hell you want with the music. At least, that's my view on the subject
