AFF Level 3 - Overcoming Failure!

  • After two very successful AFF jumps, and a few minutes in the wind tunnel, I was READY for my AFF Level 3 Jump. However, upon release, I became unstable and ultimately failed my first attempt!
AFF Level 3 is the first student course jump where the instructors let you go, and you're required to maintain stable and maintain a heading. Upon review of my first jump's footage, the problem was obvious: not good enough leg awareness!
I went home that night and practiced my arch for an hour on my carpet in front of my closet mirror. The next day, I came back with a stronger body position with more positive legs.
I was nervous. Perhaps more nervous than my first jump. However, not nervous of jumping out of a plane, but nervous of failing! Sometime during the plane ride up for attempt #2, I turned my mindset from anxious to excitement! I realized, that the sensation of anxiety you feel in your chest is the same sensation you feel when you're excited, and the only difference between the two is mindset! I rode the rest of the way to 13k' with a smile on my face.
My turn. Attempt #2. Ready, Set, Arch! 4 Seconds. Altitude. Practice Touch. Altitude. Release...
    SOLID AS A ROCK!
Success! Pass! Canopy opens, and I'm more stoked than I was after my first jump. Not only did I over come the fear of skydiving, but I overcame the fear of failing, and overcame the doubtful thoughts that were most likely to make me fail!
Onto AFF level 4 and onwards!

Amazing jump and thanks for sharing!
I had a terrible experience on jump 1. I was going to go back and try again the next day. But after a few recommendations of doing tunnel, I spent 18 minutes in the tunnel. The instructor in the tunnel was great and the last two minutes of tunnel we spent them trying to get me off balance and recoup.
Went back for a retake and passed two and three without any issues. I would highly recommend tunnel time to anyone who is considering or is struggling with any of the levels. I know some that "get it" right away and don't take time for the tunnel but for the rest of us it is an amazing tool to help you.

    Very interesting, thanks for sharing.
I'm currently in AFF and had a similar experience but in Level 2 which I then had to repeat and then passed. It's pretty overwhelming with so many little details you need to remember up there and the arch body position just feels very unnatural in some way. After I failed I was pretty nervous, just like you - not because of jumping out of the plane but because of the stress and worry of doing a mistake again.

@@porglife4104 I'm really happy for you! I'm doing the AFF course, I recently failed the third level, I repeated it and passed even though when the instructors left me I had a slight rotation. On Saturday I should do the fourth level, I admit that I still have a bit of anxiety and I haven't yet overcome the fear of the door and the anxiety of the pre-jump. Let's hope so!
