#84: Offensive and defensive options from the hand post single.

  • In wrestling we are taught to snap people down so their hands go to the mat. There’s many reasons for this. One is that when his hand is on the mat, his back is now parallel to the floor, which takes away his power. Another reason is that now I can control his hand and prevent his offense. In general, I want my wrestlers to keep their hands off the mat when they are working on shots. It opens up a whole series of things for the defensive player that he did not have until his hand hit the mat. If you’re very high level, you know the risks. But if you aren’t, this is a good fundamental thing to understand and avoid. Stick to the fundamentals. Do the John Smith outside single finish. Do the cutback if he isn’t stuffing your head. You’re unlikely to recover a high head position when the defensive man is doing the proper defense and stuffing your head.

      Lol!! Not sure what there is to say. Everything I am showing here is classic wrestling techniques that we start showing to 10 year old kids. I was going to show these techniques long before he showed it. Even if another collegiate wrestler is showing it, that doesn’t mean it’s the best option for new wrestlers to go to when they get resistance. There’s just too many things that open up for the defender
      I am just here to teach classic wrestling to BJJ people because they want it. They should be getting instruction from an actual wrestler, not someone who calls themselves a wrestling coach and was never part of a wrestling team. That’s like lying on a resume. I don’t teach classic BJJ because although I do BJJ, I am not an expert. And bro, it’s even worse for judo. These people trying to teach judo is painful

      Lmfao!! Funny thing is I was actually going to make a video about hands on the mat a long time ago and got hurt. Then while I am suffering from post surgery, I am watching people show that recovering head position and am like OMG man, please stop that rarely works without opening up more issues.
      Then I started converting over VHS tapes and saw me doing it a bunch of times. I need to make a montage video of me breaking the grip and using the front headlock to the back off the hand post. So many times I scored off that. Stick to the basics. If you have to let go, then go to his hands, not the mat

      Hey bro, um, just wondering. What are your thoughts on this technique from a failed crackdown high crotch finish. I'm just asking because I see you talk about having to stick to fundamentals and things that work for mortals and not just the elites (I.E jordan burroughs), and wonder if this gets your seal of approval for being usable by mortals like me.

    • @josephbreza-grappling9459
      @josephbreza-grappling9459  4 місяці тому

      @stinkysteve8392 legit bro! Because a good wrestler will block the elbow and prevent the transition to the double. I actually did a transition to the single on the last video I posted because he had a wicked crossface and I wouldn’t have been able to get to the backside. So, it depends on what defense he is doing. A lot of people nowadays don’t sprawl and crossface. They hang over the back. But if you wrestle with an oldtimer like me, we will go to the sprawl and crossface, which will make this transition harder. So, it always depends on what defense he is doing.

  • @Forrizzledog
    @Forrizzledog 4 місяці тому +1

    Hand hits the floor = that hand is bearing substantial load from the whole system (weight+ driving force of the grapplers)
    Hands locked on leg = the grip/leg interface is bearing a majority of the load from the whole system. Defender's leg is less free to move. When your hand hits the floor he gets more mobile because a lot of the load just got redirected from being aimed at him to being aimed at the ground.
    I think, lol.

    • @josephbreza-grappling9459
      @josephbreza-grappling9459  4 місяці тому +1

      Yes. And the load is then transferred to the lower back and the posted hand, which weakens you and limits mobility

      Definitely changes what you want to do with it. The wrestling for BJJ is essentially folk style wrestling. But of course there’s not as much of a threat of going to the back and that changes shit. Just like how Alec said, ok I don’t like where this hand post single is going, so I am gonna two on one and pull guard. And he will keep that two on one and it makes everything more difficult

And he had different sequences for whatever body type the opponent has, if he is bigger or smaller and what not.
    I am currently at a judo gym where I am probably the best (thanks to you. I can beat all of them even though I don't weigh much) (I am in a country where grappling is not that popular though).

    Something I've always wanted to ask a high level wrestler is, how legitimate is no gi Judo? My thinking was that wrestling would look like no gi judo if it was effective at a high level. From what I've seen it mostly doesn't, so no gi judo is just wrestling but putting too much attention on moves that aren't high percentage.
    On the other hand, this channel frequently mentions judo more than any other wresting instructionals I've seen. Thoughts? Glad to see you putting out wrestling videos again.

    • @josephbreza-grappling9459
      @josephbreza-grappling9459  4 місяці тому

      The judo in noGi has the same issues with wrestling in noGi. It’s primarily taught by people without a judo or wrestling background, so they make thousands of mistakes.
      I had two high level judokas on my college wrestling team and they were frickin awesome man. JFlo is also awesome. The difference is they are masters of judo and wrestling. Not just some guy who thinks footsweeps look cool and so they teach them with poor technique. So if you want to learn judo, learn it from a judoka. If you want to learn wrestling, learn it from a wrestler. And you can easily modify the judo to use without a gi. Watch JFlo. He is the man for that

    • @CHEWYCHEWYQQ
      @CHEWYCHEWYQQ 4 місяці тому

      @@josephbreza-grappling9459 Love watching Jflo's channel.
      I guess my follow up would be how important is no gi judo if you're trying to learn takedowns for nogi. From watching your videos it sounds like the most useful move is uchi-mata as an underhook counter. Where would you rank that in the list of most important moves? Compare with fundamental moves like double legs or snap downs. Would it be top 5? top 10?

    • @josephbreza-grappling9459
      @josephbreza-grappling9459  4 місяці тому

      @CHEWYCHEWYQQ I think that is honestly impossible for me to answer, because there is no such thing as a top 5 or 10 move out of context. It is always context specific.
      Uchi mata is also a wrestling position, we just call it a whizzer kick or elevating with the whizzer. So, you really need to learn a bunch of things that play into situations for what he is giving to you. A good example is ippon seoi nage. It’s a great takedown, but not if he is backing up. He has to be pushing. Even better if he is circling behind your back.
      I am doing what I can on the channel to provide systems around certain positions so that you have an understanding of what is available offensively and defensively.
      I would say that I honestly think judo has a steeper learning curve. When I do judo with judokas at my club, I can’t do shit when they are skilled. I feel like the technique needs to be super clean or it doesn’t work. I feel that for noGi guys, teaching them how to wrestle with a good system, which starts with having a fantastic stance will get them very far very fast. The problem is sifting through the bullshit online. People can’t “sell” the fundamentals I am teaching as well. I guarantee you that if I started posting high amplitude risky bullshit throws, that my channel would take off. But I refuse to do that. I am only doing this to give people a good foundation. When I am satisfied with the quality and quantity I have taught, I will stop doing this. It isn’t worth it. It takes a lot of time, I don’t make shit off of UA-cam, and I end up dealing with people who don’t know shit but have big mouths. So one the library of information is to my liking, I am done

      @@josephbreza-grappling9459 Thanks for the detailed responses, a lot of good information here.
      One thing I'll say is that one of the things that drew me to your channel is that you approach it as a part-timer. You don't use weird gimmicks to make new videos and you focus on fundamentals.
