Greetings from somewhere beetween Annecy and les Glières ! I wasn't expecting to hear this word "Glières" from an english video even if it is on the resistance, took me some times to catch it (I use english history videos to improve my english - nice pronounciation of the french names). It was a good story, well narrated, who made me want to know more about this event, thanks for the sharing of this story !
Our vision is to ‘inspire people to discover and understand how many of the most compelling narratives of human endeavour and experience have been, and continue to be, shaped by arms and armour’. Since opening in 1996 we have always used drama and demonstration at our sites in Leeds and Southampton as a way to engage and entertain audiences; to illustrate how our collection has been used; and share the impact it has had through history. During lockdown, both our team, and those audiences who have consistently responded positively to drama and demonstration have had to make greater use of our digital platforms. We regret that you were dissatisfied with this dramatization of a primary source contextualising the use of arms and armour at a pivotal moment in world history. For reference, the weapons in the event described by Henri Girousse, although in only one case identified by make, were in the case of the maquisards most likely French Lebel and Berthier rifles, supplemented with Sten guns provided by the SOE and OSS; and Kar 98 rifles, MP40s and MG42s in the case of the German soldiers. You can find these items in our online collection. Unfortunately, the only weapon actually named by Girousse, the ‘20mm canon’ is either a Flak 38 or a Flakvierling, which we do not have in the collection. We strongly recommend the Present Arms series, currently running on Facebook, for more details about some of these weapons. You can find an article about the Sten gun written by Keeper of Firearms Jonathan Ferguson on our website with the title From toys to Sten.
