"You would assume that a group on Tiktok that refer to themselves as 'Watertok' love the taste, texture, simplicity, and beauty of water" The community you're looking for there is the hydrohomies subreddit. They just talk and post memes about drinking water and it's so funny to me. They've found the simple things to to celebrate in life.
I thought it’d be about microorganisms in different bodies of water, since a lot of people tend to be afraid of them when they see images of small creatures with large antennae and lots of legs, but really they’re quite harmless. I thought that “watertok” would be educating people about that. Now I’m disappointed.
13:18 a lot of sweeteners used in these powders and syrups tend to cause diarrhoea (when consumed in larger quantities), so watertok is just how to make instagram “detox” teas (that are just laxatives) at home. a little treat every now and then is fine but these women are making huge containers and having multiple of those every day
It’s my understanding that WaterTok started among people who have had bariatric surgery. A known side effect is water nausea, which makes their already high risk of dehydration even higher. That’s why the focus is on sugar free powders and syrups. Then I guess it met up with Stanley cup mania and exploded all over the live laugh love universe.
I mean I make myself a big glass of iced tea every day to get more liquid in my system cause I find water hard to get down sometimes(I'm autistic so taste is weird for me) but like, I'm acknowledging that I'm drinking iced tea. I'm acknowledging that I put sugar powder in my water and it's a different beverage now. Still calling it water is such a weird way to go about tricking yourself into thinking it's healthy
The thing that gets me about things like Watertok is how something like drinking water is somehow transformed into an entire identity and actually leads to fad-buying and overconsumption (buying 8 Stanley cups completely missing the point of a reusable cup). Like you're free to drink flavored water it's fine, it's just strange to make that your only defining trait.
I'm curious what portion of watertokers are genuinely taking it on as an identity vs milking it for content (& money). Also wondering if the Stanley brand sponsors these people.
I love seeing them together! I feel like we rarely see Danny actually laugh because he doesn't laugh at his own jokes, but he's laughing with Kurtis ☺️
Beep bop... I'm the Philosophy Bot. Here, have a quote: "It is absurd to divide people into good and bad. People are either charming or tedious" ~ Oscar Wilde
I’ve seen this video more than i see my family (I live with them). Seriously my comfort video, I have to have watched it like 1-3 times a day for a couple weeks now.
At least they're ready to give their childlike innocence up, just to inform, educade and entertain us. By the way, the last water they've tried was just looking like poo-water. 🤢🤮
Genuinely delighted by the cinematography that went into that cursed hot dog water sketch, it's lovely to see Kurtis continue to put passion into his videos like this
Fun fact: even though the packaging says "0 grams of sugar/0 calories" there are still both sugar AND calories in those mixes. It's just low enough of an amount that the companies don't have to put it in the nutritional facts.
This feels like a group of people trying desperately to be a niche community but they've unfortunately failed by basing their liquid fandom on the one drink literally all people who lived ever drank
It feels like the world is ending: everyone is going insane..... Take something healthy and make it as unhealthy as possible: like everything else most people consume..... And this isn't even the worst of social media. I am not even on all those platforms because people make me want to NUKE THE EARTH.
There’s a joke that I use that I added that Kurtis quote to. “Have you heard the joke about water? Ah, never mind…You’ll see right through it. I think it’s pretty clear.” and if they respond- usually with a “wow, that’s so funny” (doesn’t matter if it’s sarcastic or not) I will add “WATER you tokking about?”
I'm pretty sure a lot of these people have eating disorders that won't allow them to eat an actual piece of cake... Side note, I literally can't eat sweets without drinking some water after every bite, especially chocolate ones. It just makes everything taste so much better.
I was laughing nonstop during the taste testing bit. Made me so happy I love it when people look like they're genuinely just having fun with each other
My only issue with watertok is how badly all these artificial sweeteners would DESTROY MY BOWELS. I wish I could use them without the stomach problems but no such luck. I wish there was more flavored and unsweetened stuff besides seltzer.
No, it started by someone who had undergone bariatric surgery, and it mixed wi the Stanley cup people and then it took off from there. It’s not “toxic diet culture,” it’s a trend started by someone who had undergone surgery.
@Jimmy as toxic diet culture (which encourages bariatric surgery which has a tremendous rate of regret and suicidality) has shown us with everything from Keto (which was developed by doctors as a last resort to treat seizure disorders) to taking diabetes drugs (which has led to a national shortage), what something started as and how it spreads is disconnected.
@@AntheanCeilliers saying something has roots in something means it started there. Watertok didn’t start because some woman wanted to go on a water only diet, it was started because she needed to stay hydrated after a surgery.
I'm genuinely curious how the watertokers using the syrups got their water to be that color. Kurtis overpoured the mermaid one and you could still see through the water....
actually part of that is likely due to food dye restrictions. you can see that the syrup is lighter in bottle too. the us has very lax registration on food color so food tends to be more vibrant. you can actually look at pictures of products in the us vs Canada or uk and the colors can be drastically different it’s kinda neat to look at. and yeah filters defo play a role too :)
Regarding the similarity to "Disney adults", I do kind of feel like Watertok has some sort of corporate astroturfing behind it. There's so much rampant hyperconsumerism on display, especially with specific brands like the Stanley cups and the branded syrups and powders that it's difficult to believe they all just randomly decided to spontaneously start a new TikTok trend without some sort of corporate backing.
Definitely sponsored by skinny syrups. It's insane how many they have, that stuff is STRONG! I put basically a drop (or, as close to a "drop" that you can get from a bottle) of their pistachio syrup in my smoothies or coffee, and it definitely overpowers the taste. And the people in the video are POURING it! I can't imagine how strong the flavors of those beverages are.
Danny and Kurtis trying the water "recipes" and joking around reminded me of doing dumb, silly shit with my friends at like 2am during a sleepover in high school and it's just so hilariously wholesome to watch

This definitely makes me a hater but I do not comprehend the Stanley cup trend. They’re fine but the only real advantage I can give them is they fit in cup holders. But they accomplish that by having tiny bases so they tip easily which is an issue because just using my eyes I can tell they leak. I use a generic insulated water bottle it doesn’t fit in a cup holder but that also doesn’t matter because it’s leak proof and still has a straw. And keeps stuff cold/hot slightly longer cuz no leak. Are these Stanley cup people aware that there are a million brands offering the same features for at least a little bit cheaper. Fuck I can’t believe I just had a 2 paragraph rant about how a water bottle is just fine 😂 They’re actually not even that expensive for the product, just like 5-10 bucks more than average
We don’t own any stanley cups but my wife has 2 water bottles, one for work and one for home. She has ADHD and will easily forget to bring water with her/stay hydrated, so having them both in specific places helps her stay healthy. I cannot IMAGINE owning more than 2 though. Or like, maybe you keep a second one for when the other is in the wash, or so that you can fill both to take on a trip or something? But nobody could possibly need 8+ on their own.

Mango mango mango😈
The woman pointing out that this has roots in toxic diet culture is spot on.

I think she put an orange filter over and made everything brighter
actually part of that is likely due to food dye restrictions. you can see that the syrup is lighter in bottle too. the us has very lax registration on food color so food tends to be more vibrant. you can actually look at pictures of products in the us vs Canada or uk and the colors can be drastically different it’s kinda neat to look at. and yeah filters defo play a role too :)

Regarding the similarity to "Disney adults", I do kind of feel like Watertok has some sort of corporate astroturfing behind it. There's so much rampant hyperconsumerism on display, especially with specific brands like the Stanley cups and the branded syrups and powders that it's difficult to believe they all just randomly decided to spontaneously start a new TikTok trend without some sort of corporate backing.
not to mention all having the same brand of bottle
edit: I'm dumb and noticed you already mentioned this lol ignore me
Their definitely getting paid
I’m sure some on them are sponsored. The other ones are building their resume
This is genuinely good analysis. I think you are right. It makes too much sense.
Danny and Kurtis trying the water "recipes" and joking around reminded me of doing dumb, silly shit with my friends at like 2am during a sleepover in high school and it's just so hilariously wholesome to watch

it’s definitely ‘i’m bored and have too much money to waste’ behavior 🥸 also they all just want attention even if they look like dorks getting it 💀 not to mention all the plastic they waste 👩💻
The best ones are when they pour a plastic bottled water into their Stanley cup. First time I saw it I was like 🙃
This definitely makes me a hater but I do not comprehend the Stanley cup trend.
USA has weird problems.
