I played AOE2 as a kid back when it first came out and i used to blame my slow internet.. your videos got me back into playing again and it turns out im just terrible at it. I love how easy you make things look. Going to hunt out your patreon and get hold of those cheet sheets to see if i can beat hard consistently. Thanks for rekindling my love of the game
This is extremely helpful. I've been playing ranked games for a couple years now and have over 2000 ranked games but still struggle with some of the basics. I've definitely learned a couple things from this video!
Nice video Hera ❤ could you do something similar with a scout opening? I always struggle with the transition to castle age. With archers, it's good to keep producing while going up and researching crossbow. With scouts? Do I keep producing them while going up? Do I safe the resources and build knights? Then the opponent could overwhelm me when breaking the walls like he did here and I just started knight production
I used to think I would never be able to beat the Extreme AI, but after months of playing the game, I think it’s surprisingly easy once you get the right strategies and execute them well.
Hardest spams hella stuff, you just need to know the right units to build against any given opponent and roughly the correct ratios to build them in. Easier said than done. But you should know what your generic “strongest army” looks like vs civs you have little to fear from. But some civs may require you to have different compositions for an ideal setup if they pose serious challenge to your fundamental units. And then roughly what ratio is needed between melee/meatshield, ranged, and siege as you change between defending, advancing, besieging, marauding
I'm currently fighting Hardest on like 80%/20% win ratio - whenever I lose, I restart the game and either try to win it right away, or save it at the beginning so that I can attempt to win it later. I usually lose when I let the AI breathe, so it's often a practise of being super aggressive and always producing units.
Just close the opponent's gates with walls and plant towers outside. Their whole boom and development will stagnate. Then add monks to convert everything inside (or soften the base with ranged siege or whatever). Then take your time to build your giant doll house and Imperial super-army before breaching the walls. OK, that qualifies as "cheesing" and exploiting weaknesses of the AI, but in my opinion, the AI has unfair advantages too... 😁
This has to be the smoothest tutorial I've ever seen, yeah maybe there is a couple of steps, but when you play like ten or fifteen games you start to do things automatically so you now can focus on the more attention demanding things like micro
Found this video after struggling against hardest AI and you make extreme AI look so easy! Really useful guidelines here and seeing you make minor mistakes is reassuring, like I don’t need to be stressed about doing a perfect game. Maybe someday I’ll be up to extreme
Waiting for the day when you can select Hera or Viper or any other player as an AI, which has learned from all their games. Imagine playing against yourself or the "yourself 6 months ago". Would also be cool to have an interactive "Helper" in your game telling you things like "Your opponent has skirms, I recommend siege", "Options where to build your next TC" or simply highlighting your civ's strengths etc. Would be amazing way to learn the game. Anyway :) Great video!
Hey Hera, could you consider doing playthroughs of any of the single player campaigns that you like? I think it'd be really fun to watch. If you happen to find them too easy, maybe you could create your own challenges or your own unique spin on things with some commentary
@@HeraAgeofEmpires2I haven’t seen anyone speedrun them as well as they probably could be. It’d be cool to see how fast you adapt to the objectives and multitask different objectives You can probably beat most levels within 10 minutes!

Hello Hera, would you consider making a video about building placements and/or map control ? I think it's an interesting topic both in arena and open maps. More often than not I find myself questioning where to build what.
It would be interesting if Hera make a low EAPM rank game challenge (like 20-30 EAPM). This challenge could demonstrate the potential ELO of low EAPM players.
That could be a nice mod. Each players starts with a limited number of actions and they get new possible actions at a fixed rate. Actions would be a resource that trickles in.
To get the achievement to win against the Extreme AI, I had to totally cheese it. Picked Michi and chose Huns as the Ai civ, since they haven't got Onagers and the Ai can't treb cut through trees. I opened a narrow way and filled it with halbediers and Longbowmen, the game took a few hours but I got it :)
Pretty funny how extreme AI is hopeless against mangonels and don't even bother to try picking them off with vills but the moment they see rams they go berserker.
I like how the AI refuses to micro vs pros :). LOL just did this and shot 3 mangos at a clump of like 20 archers and hit like 2, shot them in different spots too
Genuine question. How smooth would this go w/out micro, because I am TERRIBLE at micro. I can barely manage to go between town and army while staying focused. I'm at a point where I can beat hard AI about 40%-50% of the time. I can't even see how I would possibly beat Extreme AI. More background: I started playing this year and have about 160 hours in game.
Anyone noticed the last couple of days a significant increase in AI strength? Me and 2 others have been playing against Hard AI (HD version) for a while now, and lately it seems the difficulty has risen!! AI with 110 villagers, constant production and so on!!! We used to win almost easily at this level and now we struggle! 😅
AI (CD) and AI (HD) are from the original and HD version of the game and doesnt really get updated afaik. Their play also relies on cheating on resources and such... I'd recommend playing against the modern AI instead as they use legit strats that you can learn from and get better at yourself :)
I actually beat the Extreme AI as a 500 ELO player with Persian douche. If you TC drop a spot which reaches their TC and berries, they will keep suiciding villagers and you win. I know it's cheese, but at least Ruben will be proud.
I kept trying to finish him in fuedal, but he would always have a massive army of skrims and archers and would mop my army, then come and slowly kill my base. Now I know to just kill a few villagers and then go back home, wait for xbow, then come back and mop the fuck out of them
the easiest and most fun way for me is just spam monks and f3 for pause, so you can target fire every single monk, then unpause. thats also the way I beat every single campaign on hardest difficulty.
Hera out here easing past extreme AI while making a video and heres me playing against standard AI while being G-fueld to the max and getting demolished 😂 crazy how people can be so good 👏
Dude I swear to god I cannot get the archer rush to work above moderate AI. Even with 7-10 archers massed in late feudal, the AI always comes with 20+ units and overwhelms me :(
19-20 vil Arch rush is about all you can do to reliably take down extreme ai. Its almost always going to make a bunch of scrums and a few archers around the same time. Its not that engaging since you can just make archers and jump to castle and overrun them. But if you try to go like classic 30 vil castle age you will get overrun everytime. The actual trick here is alot of early pressure. AI doesn't hang with that very well since all it really knows how to do is snowball. The sooner the better for ballistics, if you still have a deathball its basically game over.
Could you go through what keybinds/clicks you're doing? I noticed you're setting production buildings to hotbar, are you always clicking that and queueing units in the background, e.g. with the mangonel?
Im trying this on hard difficulty, and at about 26 minutes i have 20 or so crossbowmen with the first two blacksmith upgrades and thumb ring, and they have like 10 light cav and 25 archers/skirmishers, i try my best to fight them but im getting ahhnialated. Do you have any advice for me? I am very new to the game, started about 2 weeks ago but im doing pretty well keeping my tc and archery ranges producing at all times

In my experience, towers, towers and towers, the AI doesn't know what to about them. You can build up behind them, and advance under the cover of ever more towers.
@@HeraAgeofEmpires2 One thing the AI will never be good at is mangonels and scouting. The attack-here-button is something the AI doesnt have which makes it cheesy imo. AI walking braindead under the tc which is getting shot by the mangonel. Every early aggression seems to be kind of cheesy but I get the point of this video to get ready for multiplayer where early aggression and magonels are essential. But if it's just about beating the AI, like in the title, a tower rush is completely valid imo. invariable_outcome1678 is just to good for one AI 😉
I have accidentally beaten extreme AI when I was trying out a tower rush (I can't even beat Hard). Then I got disappointed by the AI and felt like a cheater. In case you don't understand why I played against extreme, it was a 3on1 with two friends (though they didn't even interact with it yet).
I can beat the Extreme AI, but only if I'm aggressive in Feudal Age and manage to do some damage or at least harass its Vills. If that doesn't work and the AI is "left alone" to boom, I can never beat them in late game... I would love if you could do a video, where you deliberately don't attack them early and try to beat it mid-Castle Age onwards.
So well thought out, everything is optimised but I have a question, if you were your own opponent for this game, how do you think you could have won against this strategy?
Drush or maybe m@a or scout rush to delay his archers to arrive to your base so you can wall up or even tower your gold. This is at least how i would have counter it.
Scouts into skirms or just pure skirms on defense, but then arch player switches to stable or longswords in castle. Game is very complicated at high level, no one strategy auto wins against another
@@HeraAgeofEmpires2 The opponent had a bunch of skirmishers, but they failed to meet in time where they were needed most. Also, unlike human players, the AI never walls properly.
You can assign a number to a selection group with ctrl+#. For example, your scouts can be storaged on 1, archers on 2, etc... and all the buildings have special letters. Select a TC with "H", barracks ctrl+b, etc. Check out option - acces keys in game.
I really don't know how to beat the AI in hardest difficulty even. Rushing is a very viable strategy but in the long run I just really don't know what to do... I wish I could do all of this stuff at a good pace. It's really frustrating not having the skills to pay attention to everything at once.
Honestly, this is the video I've been waiting for. I can defeat the Hard AI. It's like some Harry potter stuff with every single patch... AI is getting harder. 😅
but if Ai surrounded by walls its hard to win for even advanced players because extreme ai is making things in fastest way they dont have tactics also but they are in your wall in a very short time
I tried it, but my archers ran through the opponent's horde of skirmishers on their way to the opponent's base... Maybe that's what the scout is (was 😖) for. I made almost no damage, and the AI beat me to Castle Age and breached the walls with knights, then killed my villagers with cavalry archers. GG Of course, there were a few details I could have executed better (constant production, building farms rather than floating wood etc. 🙄), but on the other hand, I added deer pushing to boost the plan!

it would take a bit of organisation, but you let the 'picked winners' make a group and you give them like a week to decide when they'd wanna do it (at times when you'd be playing anyway) 2 days after you picked the winner (could be at end of vid to boost the 'time peeps watch a video'), if sb hasnt replied, you draft new random peeps to fit into the missing one.

@@HeraAgeofEmpires2 The opponent had a bunch of skirmishers, but they failed to meet in time where they were needed most. Also, unlike human players, the AI never walls properly.
Teaching anything makes you better at it. Teach some 1k rating stuff please, also Ill sub for your PDF once I get paid
Now we want to see how to beat extreme AI without producing military units XD
Great guide, thank you!
someone should tell him that this is goose and not sheep. he even makes the gaaa gaaa sound
Which command or keys do you use to move the screen back and forward between your army and base?
You can assign a number to a selection group with ctrl+#. For example, your scouts can be storaged on 1, archers on 2, etc... and all the buildings have special letters. Select a TC with "H", barracks ctrl+b, etc. Check out option - acces keys in game.
How different does the HD version of extreme AI behave? Is it harder to beat?
Just watched this and beat my first extreme 1v1 straight away
I recently stared beating hard but this video gives me hope to improve
My strat to beat extreme AI:
Play skirmish game with 25 pop space, all map visible, start in Castle Age and use monks to convert all AI units. 😁😁
I really don't know how to beat the AI in hardest difficulty even.
Rushing is a very viable strategy but in the long run I just really don't know what to do... I wish I could do all of this stuff at a good pace. It's really frustrating not having the skills to pay attention to everything at once.
I learned a ton just now! That was awesome.
Honestly, this is the video I've been waiting for. I can defeat the Hard AI. It's like some Harry potter stuff with every single patch... AI is getting harder. 😅
make a video vs. 8 EXTREME AI PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE it would be so funny
I love this game. I'm 50y old. I can never be so quick.
but if Ai surrounded by walls its hard to win for even advanced players because extreme ai is making things in fastest way they dont have tactics also but they are in your wall in a very short time
You make it look so easy.
Solid guide Hera
I tried it, but my archers ran through the opponent's horde of skirmishers on their way to the opponent's base... Maybe that's what the scout is (was 😖) for. I made almost no damage, and the AI beat me to Castle Age and breached the walls with knights, then killed my villagers with cavalry archers. GG
Of course, there were a few details I could have executed better (constant production, building farms rather than floating wood etc. 🙄), but on the other hand, I added deer pushing to boost the plan!
