- In this video, we're going to reveal the secret to increasing your sales and profits on eBay by stop using free shipping.
Free shipping is a great way to increase your sales on eBay, but it's also a BIG mistake that can ruin your business. By stopping your use of free shipping, you'll increase your profits and protect yourself from returns through eBays Policies.
This video is a must-watch if you want to see how to increase your sales and profits on eBay by using smarter methods!
I don't do free shipping, but I also don't use calculated shipping because I live in the Pacific Northwest which makes my shipping more expensive then a lot of other sellers. To combat this I set up shipping policies and I charge $5.99, $9.99, $14.99 etc. Then I just apply the one that is the closest to what I will pay as a seller. Sometimes I make a little, sometimes I lose a little, but it's always close and it makes me more competitive. Great video. Keep them coming!
I like you strategy!
I use calculated as I am in SD the Midwest
I never do free shipping on anything because in my experience the buyers looking for something with free shipping have always been problem buyers.
That is also something to consider, buyer behavior. Excellent insight
Ummmm good point !
I never considered that by offering free shipping and if something gets returned, you have to refund that as well. What a great tip! I’m just getting started but more free shipping for me!
Good video, I stopped doing free shipping for the same reason. I don’t do free returns, I’ll refund any item for any reason an I have. It’s easier just to refund an let it go. I just think doing free returns invites to much mischief. That’s my thoughts your mileage may vary.
Thanks for all your videos and info man i always learn something new from you. Ive been watching your videos for a few weeks now and im excited to see the growth. I think youre gonna go far
Great sound advice! I’ve lived and learned the shipping woes on eBay and I too, rarely if ever offer free shipping. Thanks so much, love your content!
I have probably 8-10% of my items free, well included shipping.. My very first item I sold with free shipping was returned (pair of jeans) so now I'll do things like my own flat rate on hats..8oz box usually $4-5 so I do $14.99+$5 flat rate.. Recently started using usps select ground 2-8 days for heavier items to keep shipping a little lower.
Enjoy all your video's, I've learned alot so far.
I really love your channel. I would like to see you do some videos on sunglasses, small appliances, like the one you did on the remotes. I need help on how to look sunglasses. I have tons of them and can't get but a few to come up from the numbers on the frame. Going crazy.
I used to charge a flat rate for shipping but decided to test out free shipping instead. I increased all my prices and edited the shipping policy. Switching to free shipping more than doubled both my sales and revenue (literally) overnight. I think that eBay gives listings with free shipping and free returns higher rankings in the search results too. I don't think saving a few bucks on the occasional return is worth the sacrifice. I sell primarily sell a large volume of trading card singles though so the shipping is typically $1 or less for me.
I agree that for heavy/expensive to ship items it makes sense to charge calculated shipping, but for everything that's like $10-15 or less to ship, I'd argue to just do free shipping in order to get better rankings and appeal to more customers. Even if your profit is decreased by a couple bucks from shipping to a distant state, who cares? The point is to turnover inventory quickly and make the snowball roll as fast as possible. You said in one video that you make like $30 profit per sale on average with 30 sales per day (or something close, I dunno). If offering free shipping decreased your average profit to $25 but increased your sales to 45 per day would you make that trade? I would.
I think this depends on what you're selling. I sell small light items that are at most $4 to ship. I just add $4 to what I would have originally put on the item. Free shipping has made my sales go up quite a bit and I also now don't lose sales because people ask for combined shipping and then do not purchase anything, instead they just purchase because there's nothing on their end to worry about. I also have free returns because you have to have that to be considered a top rated seller. I have been protected multiple times that other sellers do not just because I'm a top rated seller. I understand not offering free shipping on certain things that are heavy or have a high return rate.
Great idea!
youtube gave me a little survey about your Channel! hooked you up real good buddy!! keep it up
I’ve just found you and your videos. You’re approach is awesome. I love your content. It’s very refreshing and do helpful. Thank you. You’re doing a great job for us resellers.
Great vid as usual. Always dropping knowledge!! Thank u for that. Always look forward to your vids.
I live on the east coast and most of my customers are on the west coast. Free shipping would kill my profits.
I was just listening to a podcast earlier and the discussion of free returns came up. This seller does not offer free shipping but offers free returns. The question asked of the seller was did offering free returns increase sales. The actual owner of the business was not on the podcast today and the workers did not know. What are your thoughts on this? I think it would open you up to all kinds of ridiculous returns.
I would love to know the answer to this question as well.
Great video, I am new reseller & have been doing free shipping so I totally understand more. Looking forward to the next few videos on shipping !
Great videos your putting out. Full of top notch info. Thank you.
Free shipping is only hurting the average seller if they don't understand how to implement it and aren't doing enough volume for it to make sense. First and foremost, some sellers think that free shipping is truly "free", which is mistake number one. Free shipping from a seller's perspective is just factoring the cost of shipping into the item price to present a single number to the customer. Many people subconsciously prefer $25 + free shipping over $20 + $5 shipping. Not to mention that eBay's algorithm favors free shipping listings.
If someone is going to offer free shipping, then they need to factor in the average price an item would cost to ship, only specify "standard shipping" instead of USPS Priority or any of the other services by name to give you the option of using any service First Class or better, then count on enough volume to create a "win some / lose some" scenario. In other words, if I lose $3 on 100 orders because they each went $3 over on my shipping estimate, then gain $3 on the next 100 orders because they went under, everything cancels itself out. If someone lives in the dead center of the US, then it's even easier since the max shipping distance for a domestic shipment is going to be significantly less than someone on a coast that may have to ship across the country.
There are plenty of ways to skin a cat in this game and free shipping is a highly effective strategy if you know how to correctly utilize it.
Such good information! You haircut is looking sharp 👍🏼😉
Invaluable insight to me at this time. Thank you so much
This depends on your item costs and profit margin. Since all of my items are under $15.00 at a PM between 500-1000% I can't afford not to do USPS FCM free shipping. Sure, I have about a 5% loss for all the reasons but still come out way ahead. Also, no returns and yes on refunds has kept me a happy and profitable seller for several years.
I don't do free shipping. I use calculated shipping + a handling charge that covers the cost of my box or padded envelope and any anticipated padding like bubble wrap and peanuts. I frankly don't care if I might lose a sale here and there with a handling charge (normally like 85 cents). The handling charge just adds into the calculated shipping charge as seen by the buyer in your listing.
I've been preaching this for years. Free shipping doesnt work for most items i sell. I do offer free returns but the discount from ebay for offering free returns has paid itself probably 1000's times over than any return shipping i've paid. I will offer free shipping sometimes if its a light item and thats what other sellers are doing. It seems the few returns that i do get are often times an item i had free shipping.
Great Explanation, Thank You
Is “no return” policy hurting my business?
I only use free shipping with video games where I know that the weight is below 4 ounces and the cost is around $4. That is the market for VG and buyers will generally toggle free shipping on with their search. I would normally bump the price up a little to recoup some of the cost. $14.88 with free ship reaches more buyers than $10 +4.88 shipping. You have to be careful with massive markdowns though.
If I want my listings only sold to buyers in the 48 continental States, not Hawaii and Alaska, how to set up this policy to let the shoppers know? Is there something in the setting or in the listings I can do to specify that policy?
Yeah I learned this the hard way too unfortunately haha. I do offer free shipping on most items still, but only if I calculate that it's worth it.. (like if it costs $20 to ship the item, and from looking at the competition I believe i can get $40 more by offering free shipping).
Interesting video, thank you.
I wonder how those top sellers for example are able to do most of their items 3.50 ,4.97 ,4.40 $ and free shipping. On books for example, dvds ?????
I offer free shipping on 95% of the items that I sell and when I say free I mean it is calculated into the price for the item that I’m listing if at all possible. my logic is free shipping just looks more appealing when people are scrolling through their search results and I’m sure there are also a number of people out there, however many, that filter search results based on whether or not the shipping is free for what they are purchasing. One thing to note I think is though that I almost exclusively sell trading cards, except for the rare occasional item that I might list that I find to sell. So my cost of shipping is quite low almost always, including the materials that I use for shipping the trading cards. Great video though! Thanks.
Yep trading cards, most video games , and small NEW items are times I would use free shipping on
I never do free shipping. It discourages multiple item purchases.
Hi there.
I have EBay store from japan.
I set up free shipping to US.
Mostly good customer, but some people send it back for just didn’t like it.
I seals big items each item were $100-$150 just return shipping.
I lost $600-$800😢 par years😢
I worry about if I set up No free shipping
US people don’t buy it from Japan.
The only time I ever did free shipping was when I had a quantity of 50 of some skin care product where I knew some buyers would buy multiple so I wouldn’t have to deal with potential combined shipping discounts
I have only used free shipping once and it was a disaster. End result I had to pay to sell the bundle of items to the buyer. Not little fees it was a fair chunk of money. Needless to say never again.
It happens glad you learned and moved on and are still here today!
Same reason i dont do free returns.
That reason alone is why a majority of refunders will use “product not as described” when returning. They put it back onto the seller and eBay is Pro Buyer.
All my items are free shipping free shipping does allow the buyer to be honest why the returning that you take that away and instead of them saying they just don’t like it you’re going to get a INAD
Agree 100% on not doing free shipping!
Could you share your opinion on the following: I believe everything sells eventually so I am trying to increase the number of listings I have (I am an everything seller-but try to avoid junk junk) to increase # of sales per day. What do you think about this?
I slightly disagree yes most things will sell eventually but if too many people see your items and click away without purchasing eBay will begin to scale down traffic. It’s not a big deal at first and is almost un-noticeable but as the junkier listings grow usually the traffic slows. Just something to analyze and think about. But I do have a goal of continuously growing my store to increase sales. In a perfect world you be able to keep find more items with fast sell through rates
@@JrideFlips thank you for your thoughts! I am still learning a great deal and I appreciate the feedback!
@@rebecasantas3444 of course! Keep doing your thing😊
Just because something can/will sell that doesn’t mean it’s worth your time.
@@rebecasantas3444 you’re thinking of it all wrong. Just because it might eventually sell at some point, it doesn’t mean it’s worth listing. Stick with items that are worth your time instead of listing anything and everything because like he said eBay is going to start slowing down your traffic.
i can not agree more with ur statement.... Free shipping only hurts the bottom line...
I have like 4 Kirby vacuums. Still thinking about selling them locally.
Those are some big boys I’d do local lol
I don't do free shipping.
I tried it on shoes, because lots of others do it. It's to easy to lose money if your not paying attention when you get offers.
One more reason not to do free shipping... the cost of shipping increases over time. So if you bake in the cost of shipping into your listings as time goes on your profit goes down as shipping costs rise. This increase in cost is cost of packing materials AND cost of postage. If you have a small number of items you may think you can adjust this manually but the longer you sell on eBay the more likely you are to grow your inventory into hundreds or thousands of items.
Thanks!
No problem!
@@JrideFlips You're the man! very thankful to have found you and your wealth of knowledge keep being awesome! Love the Thrift store Vids! so quick and precise! would love to see more posted!
There is nothing wrong with doing free shipping, especially because you can bake the difference in your price. If I I have a pair of jeans worth $30 flat, there is no difference selling them for 21.99 +7.99 shipping, or selling them at $30 free ship. They're worth $30 no matter how you slice it. Just my opinion.
Did you listen to the part about returns?
@@JrideFlips yes. You said returns happen. So if you lose here or there so be it.
I am a top rated seller and do not offer free returns. Buyer pays return costs.
I do not agree. I don't have business. So I have to pay shipping on Small things no since thing.Ebay is big Company they should do Free.
Yeah but you really shouldn’t be getting that many returns. If you are getting enough returns that you even have to worry about stuff like that, you’re doing something wrong. Should be an extremely small % of your sales
I charge shipping on most items. 😊
I believe you’re better off doing so!
