Mate, it is another Nissan but the main thing is you got your Dad the most appropriate car for the money. He’ll be able to do the trips with you and that’s the most important thing!👍
Nice buy. You're right about the overall costs of making these more capable and functional, which many folk don't realise early on. In short, they cost heaps of cash to modify!
Great choice Tyler and Gary. Noting wrong with a crd, mines done 290k now. Definitely add tilix kit, welded intercooler, scanguage and egt gauge to the list as well.
The auto diesel has a good transcooler setup just needs the transcooler in the radiator bypassed. If you want it to shift a bit firmer you can unplug the plug on the firewall where the clutch master on a manual would be.
We love having Dad on the adventures Be interesting to keep it more average in modifications and see how far it can get Lockers, tyres , 2 inch lift, bush barriers , winch
the mux did wat it needed for Garry n now dad wants the next step in his touring/offroading life. looking forward to the build that Garry has in mind for the big Pat. so awesome Garry.
Front mount cooler and intake kit from fabwitz. Solid Tensioner pulley coz they grenade Superior 3inch lift New front bullbar and winch Lights Simple dual battery system Front locker DONE.
Also service the auto and by pass/replace the auto rad cooler cause it'll fail filling the auto with coolant. The engine? Well, it's a time bomb unfortunately so treat it very kindly.
@@ericjohnson6802 it's a crd mate not a di will last forever if he gets it tuned by someone who knows there stuff. Ie evolution tuning 👌 mines got nearly 400k and no blow by still kicking on with the stock turbo to 😅
Yep, keep the lift as low as possible. This way, it will still look good on 33s and will be more stable on the tracks than your GU. Just go longer shocks and keep it simple for now. Garry is going to love it! 😎
Might not be the best for content, but it is the best for your old man. Very realistic build too for the every day battler out there, keen to see it keep up with you guys 👌
The GUs are great 4x4s we went the same way from a 17 MUX to a 15 GU only regret is fuel economy. Our MUX was making the dreaded police siren sound in the turbo so it had to go, much happier with the GU.
I have a 2009 ZD30 CRD Patrol with a front locker on 33's and it's been an amazing rig, the engine does make me nervous at times but in terms of offroad capability it's incredible. Great choice Gary!
Hey Tyler and Gary, love the relationship you fellas have together and shared interests ! I owned a GU ZD30 for many years….. fantastic 4by out in the bush and on road everyday driving ! Absolute must have spare to carry is a genuine Nissan serpentine belt and tensioner assembly with pulley fitted (please don’t go aftermarket just don’t last) its not if - but when - the bushes and hydraulic arm of the assembly will flog out and give you trouble on the tracks ! Change just the tensioner pulley annually with all the off-road work you will be doing, Also doesn’t hurt to carry a genuine MAF sensor they can be temperamental and a show stopper too. All the best fellas….
Even though it’s another Patrol, the GU4 has a number of differences to your current GU, it’s a 3L diesel which is different to the petrol GU and and TD42 in the GQ. Looking forward to seeing the build!
Don't overlook the best upgrade after front locker - a valve body upgrade. This will give engine braking in 1st low, a massive benefit offroad. Maybe some 63% reduction gears as well, so Gary can go down and up knarly stuff easily. Throttle control - yes, helps massively on bouncy uphill stuff. Toss the factory intercooler because it's leaking and get at least a welded one. Check if it's got a Tillix valve to support the boost control. Put a second battery in the front wired in parallel so winching gets enough power supply.
I was thinking this exact thing on your last high country vid when Gary had to sit some of those tracks out. I honestly thought you would go down a different road than another patrol but i completely understand your reasoning as to why you got it. And lets all be honest, you cant beat a patrol for off road work. The mux has been great but its most definitely time.
Have owned my identical (2008 aswell) wagon but manual for coming on 7 years now and no intention on selling her any time soon. Have done over 120k on it (has near on 300k) and has been running 21psi factory turbo on a custom remap since about 230k with no massive issues. Definately get a boost controller if it doesnt have one already and maybe egr block and upgrade the intercooler even if just a cheap ebay welded item. Theres a reasonable these are so popular!!! Mine sees alot of off road albeit mainly beach stuff they are a great balance of capable off roaders and comfy long distance tourers!

Great news for the old fella and great to see him getting his own big rig!, good plan keeping it as a "smaller" patrol. Please please please throw the factory alloys in the bin BEFORE one parts company and leaves you on 3 wheels with no warning. Well known issue fo a reason: Basic cause is over tensioned wheel nuts distorting the rim but theres more too it. Squashed and distorted wheel nut seats not allowing the rims to abut correctly on the hub face, or allowing the domed nuts to bottom out and feel tight, but the rim isnt actually under tension and then works the nuts loose.... At 100kmh if your lucky you will feel a slight warning wobble before they go walkies. If your not, you will wonder wtf that thing was off to your side bouncing through tree tops before you slam into the ground....
That is soo cool! Reminds me of my father, who decided that it's time to buy the harley he wanted his whole life at the age of 77, after he'd seen me, bringing my big twin home. 😊👍🏼 My Parents bought a campervan also, after we'd gone on our first trips with the offroad caravan and we met on several trips with them now, what is great for the whole family😀👍🏼

Those 4 speed autos are very highly geared in low range (only 24.6:1). A set of reduction gears and/or regear diffs to 4.625:1 will really make a difference.

Great buy TT, I've been driving and racing 4x4s in Aussie, US and Dakar..and after working at the Nissan HQ and speaking directly (well through interpreter) to their techs in person...NOW I have 2, modded and unmodded. The ZD30 is a great engine, the CR models are not so much a problem..after you do the small changes and basic mods, you'll get great life from them...there are ZDs out there with 700,000 KMs and still going fine. Re the ZD30 engine, many bag it from the past and the DI versions which due to its glow plugs remaining stuck on on occasions causes the 3 piston to crack and shit itself. What people do not realise is that it is a very strong engine so much so that it's standard internals can handle up to and over 500hp!!..at the end of this I'll post the proof of a guy I know, he drives a 450hp ZD30 race 4x4 WITH UNMODIFIED STOCK INTERNALS..and goes hard at each race meet. I know of several in the UAE that are used in dune climbing with over 750hp and one that's 525hp which tows the 750 to competitions and it has since last weekend now is over 300,000kms! What I can recommend to prevent issues are the most important and cheapest - firstly, do the block EGR, then the Swirl mod..exhaust, then replace the IC to either a larger top mounted or go for the front mounted..seeing he's not turning into a full modded, a good quality top mount works fine which is same as what I use. There's a number of other mods, most are cheap which make the GU as tough as where together with its over engineered components, add all Superior Engineering mods and it makes one of the top 2 4x4s you can own... Another Nissan..yea! Nice pick up. Looking forward to seeing how your dad mod's this GU. I just purchased a clean low klm, Navara this week... Already added new A/t's 👍👍
As solid as these are they don't do tough tracks with mild mods. had a 2008 aswell for 5 years, setup like a tourer and it just didn't perform with the weight, size and lack of power. That said I have a ti 2009 tb48 that build with no intention of touring, flexy lift, 35's and barwork it puts my old gu to shame.
Would have been nice to see another landcruiser on the channel. Sure its hard to find a diesel auto landcruiser, but thats all part of the build right? And we all know Demis 80 isnt gonna see the tracks it deserves to see. IMO the Di 3 litre got a bad wrap because people were trying to drive it like they usually did a patrol. Sure theres a few mods that can keep it alive, but the biggest way is to not drive it like a patrol when its an overstrung overworked undersized engine.
As much as I am "Ugh, another Patrol 🙄", all that really matters is that Gary is happy with it, and it'll be good seeing him joining you on some of the tougher trips where the MUX couldn't keep up. And there's definitely an advantage to him having a Patrol along with you and Birdo, It's a familiar platform (even if it's a different engine), and you can share the spare parts load between vehicles when travelling as a group.
The Jeep Wrangler would have been good and aren't as unreliable as some people think. People often complain about stuff breaking on Jeeps, but then give a blind eye to stuff breaking on Toyotas and Nissans when they go wrong. However, where you are, I think you made the right choice with the Patrol as it would be better supported. While there are excellent parts and accessories for Jeeps in Aus, the best stuff always found in US and you would be looking at having stuff shipped over. It would not have made much sense.
Stock GU on 33s is significantly more capable and more durable than a modified IFS ute on 35s. I did similar, had the a PX1 Ford Ranger, thought IFS was suitable but instead found out CVs are consumable items.
Congratulations Gary on your new vehicle, at least we know Tyler will have a few old replacement parts lying around the shed for emergency use! LOL No seriously mate enjoy to the max, looking forward to seeing your first adventures in it!
Hard to tell for sure on the phone screen, but intercooler looks to be leaking. The factory crimped ones all do it. Might be worth getting replaced or tanks welded. Make sure you monitor auto temps, boost, EGT.
@@TylerThompson90 yeah it's a weak point as they're just crimped in from factory. If oil getting out so does your boost! Pretty cheap to get the tanks welded up or there's a heap of drop in replacements. I got a series 2 HPD but prob wouldn't do it again (scoop is massive). Definitely recommend using a Dawes or tillix or similar for boost control too. Intercooler, boost control and monitor EGTs and they go forever.
Great now everyone will be chasing a gu patrol. lol. He won’t want to drive the mux anymore. Once again thanks for the great and genuine content. Can’t wait to see what it can do.
Go Gazza. Mate, I'm right with Garry in every aspect. We had the forefather to the MUX, the mighty Isuzu built Holden Jackaroo, truly capable truck, loved them. Then went to 76, man are they the most overrated hyped up vehicle, Jackaroo was so much better, so sold 76 & went back to "Jack" until my son, yes "My Son" talked me into a new GU ZD30 CRC auto, yes the auto was my option as I love auto off road, wife wanted auto but & here's the big but, as the GU model run had finished dealers were stuck with auto's, manuals had sold like hot cakes, so we found it really easy playing dealers off against each other, all wanting to off load their old auto stock. Between inland dealer, sth coast dealer & central coast dealer (NSW), we wrangled them all down to $48,500 on road, but drove off the lot, brand new on road for an agreed $49,000 from central coast dealer as theirs was silver, not white hence we paid $500 premium for it, hahaha. Mine is a feb 2016 build so has a few additional tricks added in the last of the run, but I can vouch, Garry will be pleased as punch with this truck. I installed secondary fuel filter & catch can ASAP as I was aware of Grenade namesake and figured I'd stop any injector complications from new. I truly curious how well it runs 33" as I've never ventured past 32", auto fusses enough on 32", hence 33" would be annoying I'd suspect. Edit: Tyler, just noticed it's running original front mud flaps, have to question the 33" tyre claim as 33" tyres tear the original moulded flaps off, even brand new 32" muddies give them a hard time alone. You guys will be blown away (wrong choice of words) wrapped by the ZD30 CRC as I have been, it's a strong donk. Wealie. NB. Likewise we held onto Jackaroo untill rego expired, then sold it to a mate whom was more obsessed with the Jackaroo model than I was, hard to believe, but yes, there are so Jack phonetics out there.
These things are rare now .. any channel doing these over a 79 is automatically 10 plus bonus points in life this should be awesome

Keen to see the build on the patrol 👌
Keen to see you guys put it through its paces! 💪🏼
Thanks man!
Nice 1. Cant wait to watch Gaza get it on the tracks
Oh nice! I was actually looking at this exact car and thinking it would be a good buy for anyone looking for a GU.
Good choice 👍
Congratulations Gary on your new vehicle, at least we know Tyler will have a few old replacement parts lying around the shed for emergency use! LOL No seriously mate enjoy to the max, looking forward to seeing your first adventures in it!
Thank you!
Hard to tell for sure on the phone screen, but intercooler looks to be leaking. The factory crimped ones all do it. Might be worth getting replaced or tanks welded. Make sure you monitor auto temps, boost, EGT.
Yep has developed a small oil leak so will have to do something with it at some point
I would of loved to see him get a front locker in the mux, but patrol will be a good thing.
Great now everyone will be chasing a gu patrol. lol. He won’t want to drive the mux anymore. Once again thanks for the great and genuine content. Can’t wait to see what it can do.
Cheers mate!
Sounds like you got yourself a good deal mate! It currently has 285/70R17 on it I believe which is a 32.7 inch tyre
congrats!
Hmm KN filter oil.. not sure if it's a myth but get the maf sensor cleaned. Definitely install egt gauge on that engine.
Yeah my oiled filter killed maf sensor so went back to stock one!!!!
Music used by Mitsubishi Motors Australia- love it.
Good one Garry👍👍
That’s clean GU now let’s modified it mate full bar works and maybe changed it to a TD42
