Drive your vehicle off-road in stock form. If you notice weaknesses on your vehicle then do the upgrades that will address that weakness.

    • @Kiddomike
      @Kiddomike 4 роки тому +1

Hugh Jazz That is what I did. I drive an FJ Cruiser and an LC 200 series all in stock form. I drove through rocks, mud, sand, gravel, rivers, and even lahar. The only weakness I noticed are the tires. The stock Dunlop AT22 tires are okay but having serious all-terrain (not even mud terrain) tires will be more than enough to what I go through. All camping gears fit at the back. So no need for additional storage system (for now).

      If we are being honest
I did all my first bush tracks in a CM Chrysler Wagon with a 265 Hemi
Tracks i still do today in a fully kitted out Landcruiser
There is something to think about there

Awwww but all the accessories make a 4wd look bad ass .

    • @Kiddomike
      @Kiddomike 4 роки тому +1

Ben Baker True! They look cool. However, try to avoid looking like a chump on the tracks. I’ve seen quite a few kitted-out FJ Cruisers with a lot of unnecessary accessories that got stuck on the tracks. The drivers just saw me go through the same track with ease on a stock one. Too many accessories made their rigs too heavy and they just spun their wheels.

I have a term for this that applies to camping in general: "The camping paradox": year after year we buy little extras thinking each item will make life that little bit better, and, taken individually, they seem like a good idea, but the secret to real camping is simplicity. Less is more: the pleasure is in getting away from it all, not taking it with you; less stuff to worry about = less worry and more relaxing.

  • @jramseya2d

You are so right most of the time I been on outback tracks and found busted down 4x4 were over weigh, the first thing I tell every before you do a big trip is load your 4x4 with all the gear, food, and fuel water and put all the people in the 4x4 then go to a Public Weighbridge, when you get home start weighing all the stuff take out, try to keep it about 10 to 15% under GVM

I carry what I need not what I want and it’s built for me not to impress anyone else , I’ve been waiting over the years for a video like this , it’s been long overdue . I’m old school with an old school diesel cruiser and the whole 4x4 scenario is out of control with aftermarket add ons/bolt ons , camper trailers galore and more traffic in our bushlands than Northbridge on a weekend . Bloody sad .

Yes, I've kept the weight a bit of a secret for some time BUT the issue is over. I was 4.2t once heading for the Kimberly back in 2017, since then I kept dropping bits off which counted towards all the changes I've been forced to make.
Please don't make the same mistakes I did, its a challenge to get a good solid setup light (near impossible for some vehicles).
So what is the weight now??? well thats still a secret because I've yet to proper confirm with full tanks (water & fuel, camera cargo & general gear) so stay tuned for that information to come. I do have a rough idea from a tip weigh station and its on the correct side of the numbers :D. Quietly confident is the shortest answer...

I’ve been to SA and weve off roaded waay out in the bush and we were out for 16 days straight. Super deep sand. We had a diesel land cruiser wagon 100 series and a 2011 suzuki jimny. We had lockers on the cruiser and we still got stuck once. Had front and rear bars with a spare. This thing was a lemon. We cracked the rear diff while 4wheeling. All in all, I’d do it again. I’d love to get out to Australia and maybe even meet you one day. It’d be an honor to 4 wheel with you. Anyway, that’s enough rambling for today. Bye Ronny -Brody

Ref. RVCS 0-4-6-Oct 19 paragraph 10, 10.6- There are no ADRs that require the gross combination mass (GCM) of a light vehicle to be certified by testing or evidence from a manufacturer. Therefore, the Commonwealth does not assess, approve or endorse any purported change to light vehicles’ GCM specifications by second stage manufacturers. State or Territory laws may impose requirements relating to changes to a vehicle’s GCM specifications.

Secondly, you're the only person we have come across in You Tube videos that has mentioned any concern whatsoever about GVM. We're astounded at the complacency of people who don't know or seem to care. It's good to see. Big 👍 from us.

Bought a Land Rover, it had bull bars and was based in a city here in the UK? whipped em straight off and sold em.
I work out in the woods so spend most of my time off road and never needed them.
Never had a roof rack. bolted on some decent cleats and carried big ladders straight on the roof, a full length roof rack cuts 2.4 MPG from a Land Rover. Good Video. Cheers

#10- Because remote area recovery is really expensive when you break your rig.
I put my 4wd on the weighbridge a little while ago and was just under GVM while being about 3/4 packed. Since then, I've been researching options to shed excess weight and trying to be smarter about what I bring. Packing when towing is also done very differently.
The biggest single weight saving can be realised by changing my drawer setup. I'd estimate that they would have to be close to 150-200kg. A set of aluminium drawers is closer to 65kg.

I’m so glad you are now onboard with the travel light mentality. When I saw how loaded to the nuts your truck always is and after a few years of that you cracked your frame, that was hard to take. I learned in South Africa long long ago, LIGHT IS RIGHT. Everything gets more stressed, breaks easier and gets stuck more easily when overloaded. I’m a mountaineer and backpacker as well so I’m very aware of how all the little things add up. I’m quite weight conscious when I pack my cruiser up for long trips and I always do better than the overloaded/ fully loaded cruisers and get far better MPG too.
Cheers bru, love the channel 🍻

Good on you Ronny for talking about legalities (Now address big lifts & 35s I dare you 😜)!! Been saying this for ages & how the industry should change so people don't see the image of a Chinese steel factory bolted to a vehicle as being the only option & move to aluminium as standard for the big components like barwork & racks but without the BS exotic price tag for using it instead of steel.
For a fun game, next time you see an ARB, TJM etc. fully kitted rig at a show, particularly GU & 80 series, ask them about GVM & watch them squirm 😀

That's exactly right mate! When i bought my 79 i optioned the heavy duty alloy tray, not steel. Unless you're carrying super heavy stuff in it you absolutely don't need a steel tray! I got a full sized checker plate canopy fitted on the tray and i weighed the rear axle at work and it's only 120kgs heavier in the back. About the same weight if just the tray was steel! And i won't be loading up the canopy with heavy stuff, just chainsaws, camping gear etc. all light stuff. You just have to be smart in how you go about it.

@@phantomwalker8251 I've been running a 2" lift, 33s & have been offroading all over Oz. Admittedly I don't do 'challenge' tracks as a general rule unless they go somewhere worthwhile (Barkley River Jeep Track excepted, yes I did that with 2" lift & 33s in one hit) but then neither do 99% of people who build a truck that looks like a challenge truck, is completely illegal & unsafe purely because they've seen it in a magazine or social media. People forget their vehicles spend most of their lives on the highway & have to meet the requirements set out for roadworthiness as your desire for a few hours of offroad fun doesn't exempt you from anything.

it's to easy to get carried away with the mods before you realise how heavy you got your rig for sure.
The tip I liked best was "Don't drive like a Dick"
Maybe you feel invincible in a 4.5T monster truck, but being illegal and causing a fatal crash will fuck your life big time.
Just chillax and enjoy the ride, your supposed to having fun not competing in a race to death.
Coincidentally we just back from a 6000km holiday towing an off road camper (btw only slightly over weight) and looked at the crap we were carrying and decided to remove most of it.
We did usually 200 to 250km a day, (yes even coming back along the Nullabour) found some fantastic campsites and had zero problems with the vehicle.

Reason #10: Most of the "Tacticool" and gear we buy because we saw it at Overland Expo or on UA-cam, you NEVER end up legitimately using after the initial "try it after install" and it adds up & becomes a colossal waste of money which could better be used on gas or travel visas or a nice dinner out. I learned that lesson building several Jeeps....just emptied every pocket. We're still modifying but we are keeping the new build a 2017 Toyota Tacoma very light. Great video Ronny.....Cheers from Canada!

As an American off-roader I have always just been blown away buy the things that other people in the world pack into their trucks. It happens here too, with the people who go glamping. Myself, I fit everything I need into my 06 Jeep TJ 2 door. Instead of an awning I have a plastic tarp with para cord. Sleep is taken care of with a 3 man tent, a lightweight folding cot and a sleeping bag. Clothes fit into one dufflebag and my food into a coleman extreme cooler. I like to have a lot of suspension flex so I can take on tough trails and I can't do that with a six ton truck.

A lot of people don’t realise in order to increase your GVM they subtract the additional weight from the vehicles towing capacity to maintain the GCM so if your original towing capacity is 3500kg and you get a 500kg GVM upgrade your towing capacity is now 3000kg. Great video Ronnie 👍🇦🇺

I've got the RTT and drawers in the back of my ute, with a drop down slide and fridge. I'll use my RTT if I am going to be spending a few days at the one camping spot.
However, if I am just going for one night, or out wheeling and a different destination every night, I'll take a swag and stretcher.
The best tip I have, is if you are going with friends, share equipment, figure out who has what and each take different things. Rather than everyone bringing a fire pit, table, pots and pans, share it around between each other. This will cut down on weight for everyone.

I've been watching your videos on and off for a few years now mate and I am happy to see you have come to this video. So many of the videos I have watched I cringed at the amount of weight adding accessorizing (to be the man with the most amount of gear) and thought to myself, all the gear and no idea. I've grown up in remote Aus and done a lot of remote 4WD'ing and learnt very early on, once you start loading her up, stuff WILL break and it will be a whole lot harder to fix. That's great mate and just a friendly tip. Always upgrade suspension last, after you've added all the weight to your vehicle that you want to add. Then do the suspension last so your suspension specialist can customise the right springs for the weight of your vehicle. I see a lot of people making this mistake and having to re do their suspension after added accessories. Cheers.

My little list of "needs" vs "wants". Touring in Australia, at least, you need front end protection. You need good tyres. You need auxiliary lighting. You need a suspension upgrade. Depending on how remote you're headed, you may need a UHF. Pretty much everything else is nice to have, as far as mods to a vehicle go.

Still building my touring/daily driver, supercharged 2H diesel 60 series, cut to a 4 door with tray and 75 series front springs and 79 series rear springs, with the rear diff moved back 700mm, modified brakes and an exhaust brake too. Will have the GVM, GCM upgraded to suit as I need it to tow 4 tonnes occasionally, as I have a vintage tractor I will take to shows. Been a bit crook so I'm over a year behind where I would like to have been. Love the 60 series, super heavy duty chassis, truck diffs front and rear and a truck gearbox and the 2H with a supercharger you cannot go wrong.

#10: big rigs = more gear as you said... which also equals more complex stowage plan, more hassles accessing gear, more time spent packing it, cleaning it etc etc. All of which leads to LESS time using it.
    Love your work Ronny.

After every hike we would empty our gear on the floor and put to the side the things we took and never used. A lot more than you’d think. You can do the same on a day trip vs an extended trip. I always pack accordingly with a check list for both.

So one of the keys I've been trying to stick to is reducing weight and maintaining usability. I have a roof top tent, bed bars and some lights. I have been able to keep the weight low, but I'm still at limit of GVM or GVWR reducing everything to backpacker type stuff and only bringing heavy camp stuff depending on the situation. My fridge is a little over 50 quarts capacity, my fuel is 18 gallons plus a 5 gallon fuel can, but I've been setting it up to run with most of the weight slightly forward of the rear axle, at worst. Weight distribution is as important as weight amount.
I think a good instructional video would be how to pack your truck/SUV to get the weight centered or better distributed.

Thanks for taking the lead on this Ronny! 4x4 should not be about "looks" that is just pansy. it should be about 4x4ing reliably, safely and causing minimum damage to our wonderful country. Sure the aftermarket manufacturers glamorise their wares, as they should, but that does not mean we let the brain take second place to ones member.

Thank you so much for doing this video. Finally someone makes a case for a lightweight set up. It seems like much of what is driving the fad of “overlanding” these days is the gear. Some people seem to outfit their vehicles for expedition use only to take weekend trips to places they could’ve taken a minivan! It may look cool but setting up your camp takes a lot longer with all that crap, and requires much more space. Why pull a trailer weighing thousands of pounds and killing your mpg in the process and limiting where you can go, so you can use your expensive fancy kitchen just to make instant oatmeal?!?! I don’t get it. A roof top tent limits your mobility. When you’ve got camp set up, you can’t go hit the trails. You’re stuck. If you break your camp down then you run the risk of losing your camp site. I’m in the states and I use a swag and a small kitchen set up in a mostly stock 4Runner. It’s never kept me from going anywhere I’ve wanted to go. I don’t have anything on the roof. Just upgraded tires, no lift and stock suspension. Works great for me.

Thx Ronny for a real thought-provoking video about vehicle weight. Made me commit to weighing mine on next trip for a reality-check! Great work.
Not sure about the "not speaking to the camera moments" in this edit, however, given its a one-on-one conversation. Might be much better suited to your modifieds, or trip vids where there are more people in the conservation. Just a suggestion... Love your work.

Funny you mentioned the Tritons breaking at the rear, not sure if it was a Triton but I saw a dual cab ute with its back broken on a tilt tray tow truck earlier in them in week, assumed it was on a Cape York trip. Last trip I made up there decided to only 1/3 rd fill the water tank at home , then filled (plus extra 20lt containers) up 2 days later, saved carrying maybe 130kg of water on 800km of unsealed and sealed roads. Makes it easier getting up hills , noticed fuel economy improvement too.

Reason # 10 - and I like many of the other ones posted here too - is because when you are trying to stay light , you pay more attention to WHAT you are building, and WHY. In my experience, whenever you put more thought into something, it comes out better. Have a "no compromise rig" - well, smart folks compromise - and well, failing to balance performance, need, capacity and capability isn't very smart. Thank you for an awesome series, I'm currently building out our 4Runner (Surf/Prado? for you guys?) and resisting the urge to do what everyone does and install 1,000lbs of protection - on a vehicle with only 1600lbs cargo capacity :)

I crossed australia, covering 13,000km total partly on dirt roads last year towing a 1500kg camper trailer. Never even considered GVM, GCM limits at the time, afterwards worked it out and was likeley extremely close to GVM probably just exceeding it, and the only real "upgrades" we had on our Nissan Patrol was an ARB bullbar and a steel roof-rack. We carried some jerries of fuel and water, tools and recovery bits, nothing excessive (so I thought), but it was so easy to load right up to GVM limit specially with a high ball weight.
