My family moved to Christchurch in 1962. My father was the USAF Supply Officer for Operation Deep Freeze. It was the most wonderful 3 1/2 years of my life. I will always be a Kiwi at heart. New Zealand is beautiful. I loved it there.
I was in New Zealand once...and have always told my friends that the people of New Zealand were the warmest, friendliest people I've ever met. Loved my visit there!
I visited new Zealand in 2020. Stunning landscape. Down to earth people. Low population, safe.clean and good climate. I love New Zealand. To me the perfect country in the world.
Thank you so very much for traveling by rail around NewZealand.! The country has fascinated me for many years. The trains have sure changed since i was last on then in the 1950s! Now i am housebound, so this was a much appreciated and fun excursion! Ive never seen so many sheep. We had cows here in U.S. A. In wisconsin. Very few sheep.

The family came back raving about how great a place it was.

It is such an awesome country. Been there twice. By far, the most beautiful in the world. Have been there twice and can't wait to be there again!! Love the vibe of that place, the people, the stunning landscapes, the way of life. I love Aotearoa!!
Even though I live in New Zealand, I had no idea these train trips existed. Thanks for the stunning views, something you can easily get by randomly sticking a camera out the window no matter where you go in the South Island. Jeb, you and Suzanne will have to start trying some New Zealand pies, stick to bakeries anywhere. I hope you guys have a wonderful time here and don't hesitate to stop and chat to any kiwi along the way. We are happy to make you feel welcome.
I fell in love with New Zealand and its people when I was there in in 1987. Your comment reminded me of the time I was in Wellington. I had arrived by ferry from South Island, and the hotel I was staying at sent a car to pick me up . The young gentleman driver could not get over the fact that I had traveled all that way from Chicago, just to visit New Zealand. He told me: "I've never even been off of North Island!"
Thank you for making it go off the charts within the unchartered territory of NZ railway, history and Hacienda. An entertaining and well made video. Thank you Jebediah. (I assume this is your real name Mister Jebb)
I visited NZ ,3 years ago before the pandemic hit. I traveled on the train from Christchurch to Picton. I am still amazed at the beauty of NZ. The scenery is just gorgeous. The people are so warm and friendly. I consider myself lucky to have done this journey. I am from India. Beautiful NZ, and beautiful people. It's a great country. Thank you, I relived my journey from Christchurch to Picton.
New Zealand is all the best parts of Canada brought together into two islands. I spent my first week there watching the scenery, couldn't take my eyes off everything around me. I was there for two weeks, and wished I had two months to explore. One of those few places that I will 100% go back to.
I did those two journeys in the opposite direction about 18 years ago. The transalpine had a carriage at the back with a u of windows and seats which was where I sat. And saw penguins on a beach near Kaikoura from the open carriage which was amazing on the other train! The open cars are truly fab! Two of the best train journeys I’ve done!
New Zealand has been on my bucket list for years. I can't wait to experience all that gorgeous scenery for myself. For now though, I'm stuck living vicariously through your adventures. :) Thank you for taking us along on that beautiful train ride!
Boy OH Boy, you and Susan brought back some memories for my wife and I. Back in approximately 2012, we took one of our many trips to New Zealand. Believe it or not; I had lived in Australia for about 50 years and NEVER wanted to visit NZ. I eventually took my first trip to the North Island after my daughter & her husband and grandkids moved over there. That first trip as the start of some 12 trips were eventually made across the "DITCH". In 2012, the "Bride" and I (yes we had been married by this time for 40 years) decided to travel from Christchurch; down the east coast of the South Island across to Wanaka, then down to Queenstown; the Fijordland, and up the West Coast to Milford Sound, up to The Franz Josef Glacier and carried up to Greymouth where we turned Right and headed for Arthurs Pass then onto Geraldine on the west coast after which we went back to Hokatika and Greymouth via Arthur's Pass. We travelled on to Picton and Nelson then came down the East coast though Kiakoura. I immediately recognised the Town of Kiakoura, the railway line and the very roadway we drove down. WOW the memories came flooding back. We overnighted at Kiakoura and carried on down to Christchurch where our journey began. We spent a wonderful three weeks on the road, visiting other places like the Fox Glacier, Lake Pukaki, Mt Cook, Tiamaru, and many more places. Looks like we are going to have to get to NZ again. Many thanks for sharing our wonderful journey with us. Best Wishes mate!
Glad you enjoyed your holiday Angus. I live in Geraldine, which you mention in your narrative. It's great to see the number of tourists travelling through Geraldine rapidly increasing now that NZ is open again. Since retiring a couple of years ago we have travelled extensively around NZ and marvel at the spectacular sights you went to and that we barely knew existed even though we've lived here most of our life.
I really enjoyed reliving my trip from 2006 through your video. I took 9 weeks off work thanks to a decent boss and as part of my round the world trip, spent a month in New Zealand, I did the greymouth trip on the same day they had a motorbike race on. NZ is a great country and should be on everyone's bucket list
I'd imagine the gentle rocking of the train will make one sleepy. Jeb you do love your outside observation deck- hair blowing and face kissed by the cold😁. Always great to see Suzanne enjoying the adventures👋🏾😊.
I visited NZ two times and travelled a bit in the North Island. The natural beauty is absolutely fascinating and I'm glad I saw the South Island through your lenses Jeb. NZ has a place in my heart that can't be explained. What beauty at every turn!!! Feel gutted to see the devastating effects of recent floods in Auckland, Coromandel and other places. Wishing the restoration starts soon.
Jeb, New Zealand has the most fascinating natural scenery I have seen outside of the USA. The train ride you took from Greymouth to Christchurch is among the most scenic and iconic train rides anywhere around the world. I loved the South Island and Christchurch. However, I was there before the big earthquakes rocked that beautiful city where in the City Center was awesome colonial architecture. Would I go back to New Zealand? You bet, and I would do it immediately if I had the chance to go. The people of New Zealand were the friendliest I have ever met in all of my international travels. The one takeaway I have of New Zealand is it's a gem in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean where the seas can get crazy. Btw, the weather reminded me so much of the Pacific Northwest here in the USA.
New Zealand is the world's most spectacular open air museum - an absolutely glorious mish mash of plate tectonics and millions of years of rain and wind.
Bought back some great memories of my one and only trip to the South Island of NZ . I was amazed by its natural beauty and its beautiful people too . I’d love to revisit one day , but in the meantime your wonderful video will at least give me joy . Thanks Jeb and Suzanne .
Years ago I lived on the West Coast of the South Island. I loved the fact there were trains, and got so used to hearing them day & night. I took my school ages daughters on the Transalpine right in the middle of winter. As we left Greymouth it was drizzling, as we entered the tunnel is had become sleet. On exiting it was like we had been transported to Narnia. It was magical. All the road passes were closed, so in Arthur's Pass we picked up about 4 loads of bus tourists. We stopped once for the tracks to be cleared, but it was extra time on board. Absolutely loved it! A few years later did the Coastal Pacific to Blenheim. Gorgeous! One day the North Island Overlander!
New Zealand 🇳🇿 has always fascinated me. I don't even know why. I love New Zealand 🇳🇿. Thanks for sharing. Much love from Johannesburg in South Africa 🇿🇦.💖💖💖💖🙏🙏🤝🤝
Hi Jeb, Welcome to NZ. Great video and thanks for reminding me how great the scenery is ( you forget when you see it all the time). I hope you both have a good time for the remainder of your trip.
Thank you so much for showing the world how beautiful my country is! I live further south of Christchurch! The Tranz Alpine is on mine and my husbands bucket list this summer. I have done the Coastal one a lot as a child, there was also a train that went further south, from Christchurch to the bottom of the South Island but unfortunately that was stop a decade or two back!
Just discovered the channel, and can I say... as my back issues are making me less and less mobile, watching videos like this makes me feel like I'm there, ON these excursions. I've even teared up a time or two, tbh. Thank you Jeb and Susanne for taking us along with you. 😍
Just came back from a week in NZ. The National Parks on the south island are incredible. You should have journeyed a bit further south toward Queenstown.
Was there many years ago. I discovered there that I loved lamb and ordered it every time I was able to. All the food was wonderful. People friendly. Sheep everywhere. Thanks for sharing this train trip.
As a kiwi I can confirm that my country is beautiful and I would love to go on this train . We have good scenery and im very grateful to be from this amazing country ! Love from New Zealand
I am from PAKISTAN.Although I know very little about New zealand. This rail journey was so beautiful. Your commentary was very informative.Great to see this beautiful country.❤
So beautiful to our beautiful country through your eyes. Makes me appreciate that we have something really special. I wish we had more trains. We used to be able to travel the length of the Country by train but sadly not now. Enjoy your kiwi visit and come back soon.
Which is hilarious as you have a PM that bangs on about climate chain and taxes methane on cows. Yet apparently the benefits of actually having a decent rail system and running trains seem to have missed her right by in her virtual signalling frenzy
@@xr6lad Clearly triggered by a woman in control eh. Actually the rail system was mostly killed off previously by centre-right governments. If you had a half-open mind, you'll discover the current government over the last 5 years has invested nzd billions in upgrading tracks, signalling and rolling stock, mostly for decarbonising freight transport. As a platform for further investment. Kiwis travel by plane or car as NZ's geography is mountainous. NZ is not Japan or Europe having only 5 million people over the size of Italy, Uk, Japan, California etc. What's Australia or the US's excuse for poor rail infrastructure? I've travelled Amtrak from Montreal down to Miami, from New Orleans to LA and it was a pretty dire experience. Dirty carriages and piss poor food offerings. Sketchy rail stations especially late at night. And in Australia, what passes for intercity travel (the 50 year old XPT) is a sad joke between Sydney and Brisbane. Delays.delays and oh yes, yet more delays. Till they just gave up and the last part of the trip was by bus from Casino to Brisbane. Clapped out infrastructure in countries way richer than NZ. Just sayin'....
You sound so witty, informative, and at the same time so genuine.. Loved watching your video. Hope I can travel through this beautiful journey sometime.
It's really amazing! 🤗😍 And not to mention, your presentation skills made this more engaging and made me watch the entire video without even skipping a single second ❣️ Love from India 🇮🇳
You should also try Via Rail Canada's The Canadian Train, which runs between Vancouver BC and Toronto, the trip takes about 3 days, but it's also pretty scenic.
Thanx for the great video. For those interested the locomotives on these trains are General Electric U26c (U Boats) purchased between 1972 and 1977 and have been rebuilt several times. Originally they were 2700 HP and now are 3000 or 3300 HP. There are 57 new 4000 HP locos from Stadler Rail on order due 2024 to replace the U boats. Also the NZ rail gauge is narrow gauge of 3'6"
I did the TraNZAlpine about 20 years ago and spent most of my trip in the open observation car. It was freezing, but the scenery was well worth it! Put a driving or campervan journey round the south of the South Island on your bucket list as well. The scenery is simply stunning!
I LOVE New Zealand! I would love to go there someday but since that is unlikely in my lifetime, I want to thank you for taking me on this trip with you. By the way, you really should go see Hobbiton while you are there. It is the set from Lord of The Rings and they have built it into an actual town instead of the set props they used for the movie.
Great video Jeb! I was waiting for this one! I was booked to take this train trip last year when Australia and NZ briefly had the travel bubble open but we had to cancel after covid snuck into Sydney. The views looked magnificent and I'll have to check it out next year!
Been to NZ five times, with a North Island train ride in 1995. Beautiful place. One add-on. There is a braided valley; the Horcones Valley; in Argentina leading to base camp on the south face of Cerro de Aconcagua, the highest mountain in South America.
G'day Jeb & Suzanne, what a treat to see you guys back in the Southern Hemisphere and in one of the most beautiful countries in the Southern Hemisphere, NZ. I hope you guys enjoyed your trip in New Zealand. I hope the next journey, whilst you're in the Southern Hemisphere, is in Australia (I think you've been to Perth Jeb?) I think Australia has awesome train, plane and road adventures ( I may be a little biased, I am Australian.) Can I suggest a Queensland journey from Brisbane to Cairns or Sydney to Adelaide? Or Adelaide to Melbourne?
Wow, what an incredible journey. Your 2-day train adventure across New Zealand was absolutely mesmerizing. The breathtaking scenery, insightful commentary, and your enthusiasm made it feel like we were right there with you. Thanks for sharing this amazing experience with us. Can't wait to see where you go next.
Great stuff. I’m guessing the lack of food on the TranzAlpine is because the train travels from Christchurch in the morning and will have been depleted by that. I had a similar experience on the Northern Explorer where they ran out of almost all food. You’re animated maps are cool - can I ask what software / plug-in you use to make them? 🤔
The New Zealanders built these scenic coaches themselves funny enough. The tunnel was closed to rail passengers when we were there, you had to ride a bus around.
There is a funny story about why the coaches were built here. It was thought at the time that the ex-British Rail Mk II coaches couldn't make it through the #1 tunnel on the Midland Line (the one the Tranz Alpine goes on) and so the team at Hillside had to design their own carriages, albeit heavily influenced by the ex-British Rail Mk II dimensions. Seemed to have not been an issue as the ex-British Rail Mk II coaches are now used as baggage cars.
Great trip thanks Jeb! ...another bucket list trip for me... maybe one day. I really liked the look of their menu, good quality, simple food.. no burgers or junk food excellent well done NZ!!
Great video. As a New Zealander you did a good job. My only question is, did you make it on to the ferry between Picton and Wellington? If not, this is something you must do when you come back next time. The views, especially up Queen Charlotte Sound are amazing!
You and Suzanne make such a lovely couple, and you should feature her more in your videos. She's a delight to watch as she seems to enjoy the trips as much as you do, if not more. Another good one!
Jeb, you have a pleasant and comfortable voice and a talent for narration. Suzanne has a sparkly voice and enthusiasm that is infectious. Great duo and couple. I could easily watch longer videos.
Hey guys, thanks for a great video of the land I grew up in. I'm now living and retired in England. I grew up in Christchurch and spent many holidays in Kaikoura and Picton. Thanks for taking me back to many happy memories of the country I love ❤️
Thanks, Jeb for showing us the great pictorial landscapes of New Zealand. What a jaw-dropping sceneries of South Island. The bloopers were also very comical.🔴
I really enjoy your videos, especially when you can travel with Suzzane. Your enthusiasm for Travel is so much fun to watch. It's really great that you are now including Rail and Ferry Travel. For me flying is usually fun, but the best part is after landing and exploring. You cover both extremely well. Thanks for another great travel experience.

Im glad you enjoyed some of our trains. Sadly our train services are no where near what they used to be. We hope they will improve over the future.
Which is hilarious as you have a PM that bangs on about climate chain and taxes methane on cows. Yet apparently the benefits of actually having a decent rail system and running trains seem to have missed her right by in her virtual signalling frenzy
@@xr6lad she continually disrespects the Crown as well
@@xr6lad She is a poster child on the WEF website, need I say more?
That is the greatest train ride in the world!
Thank you, thank you for that brief trip to my beautiful homeland. I cried and sighed.
Live 20mins from there
WOW! I envy you!@@jennyosborne6571
New Zealand is on my bucket list. I enjoy watching everything about the country. This was amazing. ❤
Great video Jeb! I was waiting for this one! I was booked to take this train trip last year when Australia and NZ briefly had the travel bubble open but we had to cancel after covid snuck into Sydney. The views looked magnificent and I'll have to check it out next year!
Did ya like the sheep mate lol
Hope you’ll add it to your next itinerary! It’s such a great way to see the country!
I hope the next journey, whilst you're in the Southern Hemisphere, is in Australia (I think you've been to Perth Jeb?)
I think Australia has awesome train, plane and road adventures ( I may be a little biased, I am Australian.) Can I suggest a Queensland journey from Brisbane to Cairns or Sydney to Adelaide?
The KiwiRail logo is really well done and I keep focusing on it
The New Zealanders built these scenic coaches themselves funny enough.
We did! And that video will feature next week!!
@@GreenerGrass - Are you doing the Northern Explorer train from Wellington to Auckland?
You and Suzanne make such a lovely couple, and you should feature her more in your videos. She's a delight to watch as she seems to enjoy the trips as much as you do, if not more. Another good one!
You have so much money!!!!😮
Why do you think he has a lot of money? Bc he travels so much? We don’t know his finances and it frankly isn’t anyones business.
@@kristygunterman You can’t always travel for free…so yes, he has lots of money because he travels a lot. He doesn’t work in the travel industry.
He is earning money through these videos
Jeb, you have a pleasant and comfortable voice and a talent for narration. Suzanne has a sparkly voice and enthusiasm that is infectious. Great duo and couple. I could easily watch longer videos.
Hey guys, thanks for a great video of the land I grew up in. I'm now living and retired in England. I grew up in Christchurch and spent many holidays in Kaikoura and Picton. Thanks for taking me back to many happy memories of the country I love ❤️
Love Suzanne’s sudden pop ups
I love your videos, but I also love that you travel as a couple that obviously likes each other! So refreshing and fun!
Now there is a chance people will know where Blenheim is. Fantastic
2006 we did this same trip , so beautiful . Greetings from Germany
Yes, my husband and I have been to New Zealand four times we loved every minute of.
I love NZ . Have done these rail trips before and can’t recommend them highly enough
Thank you for coming. Hope you had a good time. Safe Journey..
This is such a lovely video! Well, it's on my bucket list now. I adore train rides! Better than planes any day.
Thanks, Jeb for showing us the great pictorial landscapes of New Zealand. What a jaw-dropping sceneries of South Island. The bloopers were also very comical.🔴
I had the pleasure of visiting New Zealand. This was 1 of the many highlights of my visit!
Love you both. Enjoy.
Excellent video.
Great video of the trans alpine express. Brings back memories of taking the train from Greymouth to Christchurch years ago
35 million sheep (at least) with almost 5 per person, New Zealand is amazing. Great job capturing its beauty Jeb. 😊
More cows now than sheep.
I was just talking to a friend about visiting NZ and what's the first thing I see??? Beautiful!
I’m a kiwi living in New Zealand 🇳🇿 but have never been on these train journeys yet. Tranz Alpine looks by far the best. Been down the west coast too by car.
Thanks for an exuberant commentary. It's easy to see you both enjoyed yourselves which surely is the whole point of traveling.
