EQ pedals are the one thing every guitarist should have at the end of their pedal chain, and the thing that is often missing.

    Yep.
    Helps me out.
People think the Boss are cheep.
You know what you are getting.
No matter where you go in the world.
A Boss graphic was the same !!

I love BOSS stuff. To my ears, thy sound great. And they are not that cheap either! Price tag is no indication of how a pedal will sound. I am a compressor junkie, one of the worst compressors I ever played was a very well known brand at over £200. It was terrible.

Crunch mode on channel 2 of a mark V is one of the most glorious and perfect overdrives ever created. I was SHOCKED when you said you didnt like anything on that channel.

Andy, firstly, thanks for a very informative and interesting video. I use a GE-7 but the amount of white noise was unacceptable even for a pub band so I had it modified by a mate with a Monte Allums kit and the difference is night & day, quite frankly. Mine's an old model so Roland may have introduced a modified version now but It definitely earns it's keep on my pedal board and they can be had second hand for decent prices.

Odd, I've had two 7's (one old that I lost) and a newer one and I've never experienced any noise in either. You're not the first person to mention it. I guess I've just been lucky twice.

Hi Gareth. I have just run a check on my GE-7 which is brand new. I have watched videos that demonstrate the noise you mention. Which is significant. However on mine, I cannot replicate that noise. Not even close. I tested with the Boogie and direct line with my BOSS GX-100 and high volume (or as high as I could stand). When you push the LEVEL control up all the way it gets noisy, but that is what I would expect from my strats single coils in an environment with screens and PC's etc. Nothing out of the ordinary. I wonder if BOSS have updated their components. I wonder if BOSS continually update their pedals when better components become available. Perhaps chip manufacturers update their own components as time goes on. That is certainly something I would do if I were running the company. Seems like a no brainer. I don't know how you would look into that. Many thanks for your very interesting comment.

Bless you for pointing out guitar players that encroach heavily into bass player territory (same goes for keyboard players with a hefty left hand) Find your frequency zone.

A graphic EQ pedal will also make your single coils sound more humbuckerish and vice versa 😊

With a great "clean signal" @ the front of Yr. board, ANYTHING is possible...especially if swinging a wide variety of "Axes"!! Running a GE-7 on my "Loop Board" and a Steve Stevens Archer on my "Band Board". VERY ESSENTIAL!!

ME unit. Different patches with different gain sounds, different GE settings, different compressor settings. Much cheaper, more robust, easier to use, and more flexible than pedals. With added bonus of built in tuner, audio interface, software upgrades, ....

I looked into that one. The reason I didn't opt for it is that as I point out in the video, below about 80hz, there isnt much going on that is useful. And at 16k your really just amplifying noise. The BOSS seems to cover all the main frequencies relevent to the fundamentals and harmonics produced by a guitar . The lowest note on a standard guitar tuning is E which is 82.41hz (the fundamental). Below that, the instrument is producing nothing musical.

Nice "travel log"/overview. Got one recently to recreate a Johnny Marr Smith's board. That 15db _cut_ could be useful dialing out problematic Boogie frequencies? Cheers, Daniel

I have been thinking about your comment since you posted it. I don't think people really appreciate what compressor pedals are primarliy used for. I have seen some very strange videos with some very strange explanations. So, you have inspired me to make a video of my own. Thankyou for your input and stay tuned.

Had to rewind to listen to that tasty 5+6 groove again!
I wonder if having a detente is more of a "tactile satisfaction" issue than a precision-related feature. I can see the case where it would be harder to jostle a zero setting band out of place with an errant toe with a snappy detente, but can our ears really tell the difference of a reset/flat response made by eyeballing it on a non-detente pedal?

    • @AndyDrudy
      @AndyDrudy  8 місяців тому +1

Ahh, many thanks. The whole piece is a mix of 5/4 or 6/4. I think 6/4 is an underused time signature. On a dimly lit stage the detent would be a life saver (I would imagine). With both pedals, very little movement in the slider creates a big effect so knowing that each sliders default is no effect (zero) is a good starting point. But point taken.
