This must be the most important video I have ever watched in my life. This goes way beyond of just training. This is literally a reference of how to accomplish anything in life. Thank you very much Mike!

Hey mike I listened to this video over half a year ago and it’s changed my life thank you so much for making it. I used it for much more than lifting, I applied it to many things in my life. I would like to shake your hand someday
motivation is the final frontier, one tip I always loved to hear is that you got to do the training for you. Comparing to others is all find and dandy but dont lose sight of the fact that all the time and effort spent in the gym is for YOU. We all "bleed and sweat" in the gym to better ourselves.
Great points. Few personality traits bother me as much as people with a "if I'm not first, I'm last" attitude you describe around 14 minutes. I see it everywhere with guys in their late teens and early 20s. They've got to be perfect, the absolute best, or they think they suck. This applies to all forms of competition with young males, not just training.
We're often raised to be that way. I was raised to believe to be a failure, a burden and despite knowing that isn't the case, getting positive feedback whilst successfully having cut out the bad almost entirely, it's completely shaped me and is rooted so deep it's present daily. My mother smartly tied it to my chronic pain, disability and autism, which I'm slowly shaping into mile-stones I'm overcoming step by step, but on bad days "literally anyone can do everything better, more efficient, with less effort than me." So I don't blame men, who are already wired more competitively, to then be raised competitively to be so hard on themselves. I'll even look at other people less fortunate one way or another, old age, obesity, disability etc. working out or being active or even being out on their scooters and I just wanna (air)highfive them and tell them they're amazing, but I rarely tell myself. Leaving this weird it's my strongest driving force and my greatest demotivator risk balance. (Hence my whole life is build on habit and I'm freaking terrified having to adjust my gym-habits due to new restrictions but eternally grateful I get an hour a day rather than done.) Being in competition with no-one but myself is something I remind myself of every single day, multiple times a day, I have to. But it's hard, we all want to excel. I am lucky it's made me very humble, I praise others for what they achieved and don't experience jealousy much and when I do it's not for long, I think if I did, it'd break me, now I just keep slugging along focussing on short-term victories. (I might be addicted to progressive overload, hence having to half my work-outs is gonna be... interesting. We'll see how it affects me.)
I've worked around bodybuilders for over a decade and trust me, if they look their best and don't win, they rarely get down on themselves. Generally they trash the judges or start some sort of conspiracy theory and/or blame "politics". They get their egos blown so much and so often, the narcissism is strong and they lose perspective and lose touch with reality.
Man really didn’t feel like going to the gym today but this helped me get motivated. Well more like pumped up when I was already on my way. I’ve got a streak going and today will be the seventeenth day in a row… can’t let the streak die hahahaha even on a dragging head hurting morning like this CANT LET THE STREAK DIEEEEE
Passion took me over recently, going 2-3h a day split over 2 windows, now I'm restricted to 1h a day and I'm quite scared of the adjustment. I hope it will be a good learning moment to get more efficient, pick up ignored aspects at home (stretching) maybe get creative with bodyweight, focus stronger on rest (my sleep has been a bit slacking.) If nothing else I'll be less exhausted during the day. I don't even have goals, I'm just in love with the activity and the progress. My whole life is based on habit and loving the progress, I suck at setting goals. So I liked hearing your point of view on that.
@C. W. We do have coaches at the gym that make a plan for everyone (you can still do your own thing but for safety reasons they assign a plan and make sure you know proper form / equipment usage etc.) Including goals but I'm kind of impossible to work with. My disability and chronic pain make it hard to apply their expertise to me. Like somehow my leg press PO has exploded to a point I need flexibility asap or my knees are going to suffer. But my biceps are a fucking nightmare (to keep equal at least) because my left arm has spend 20y either holding a crutch or on a keyboard... It's got zero range of motion, let alone strength. With my issues being mostly lower body I didn't expect that... And I can't set an aesthetic goal, my body has been my prison (bed-bound for nearly 20y) for so long... I cannot see it as more than a vehicle that's finally moving, how it looks to serve that function best is whatever. I *hope* one day my mind gets used to it and I can set aesthetic goals too.
one of the most inspirational videos I have ever seen, never expected that, thanks Mike im 42 and the strongest and fittest I have ever been in my life .......I still suck though! ;-)
I have no goals. I just want to be my best self. I was challenged at work to a body weight competition and failed miserably. That was my motivation. Honestly, instead of trying to find something to do, I just have to find myself in the gym and do more than last time. It's great. Loved this so much I ran it back. Great stuff from RP these days.
As the late John Medows ,God bless his soul said,if you want to advance and push through, let lose negative people from your environment!! This apply to every aspect of life, work, relationship, training .....shitty lazy people will drag you down with them.
After the initial inspiration phase, as motivation periods wax and wane, I have found now that it's the day-to-day habituation, through a dedication and identification built up over months/years now, that puts my training as an almost automatic activity for me that I enjoy engaging in as part of my lifestyle. I rarely now need any special psychological arousal to go about the routine of resistance and cardio/aero. training every scheduled session/day AND adding in fun irregular events/workouts/endurance activities to spice things up occasionally. This is part of the joy of having a true passion for something rather rather relying on perpetual search for some "mountain top" experience or epiphany.
16:17 Although the coolest people arrive late anyway, there is a third possibility if you really don't want to miss a minute. Instead of choosing between gym and club, choose between gym and shower. If you look good enough you don't have to smell good, baby! Now that's real motivation.
If you Listen to Static-X, Discipline is on the right track! PUSH IT And, man, i started brushing my teeth more often because of these videos! It pretty hard to have questions when you already pretty much answered every one of the questions i was already asking myself before watching your videos 98% of the times LOL
I'm a 45 year old female who lifts 4 days a week in the gym. During lockdown in the UK I had my kitchen, a combination of dumbbells up to 24kg, a mat, a footstool, UA-cam and an iron will to keep whatever gains I had left. I started running and saw great effects. Nothing should put you off.
I dont remember last time I have been feeling pumped to go to the gym, and I am relying solely on my discipline and habits to go workout for about 3 years now.
I used to really have motivation to keep going while listening to music, but the most motivated I’ve been is while listening to the sopranos while I work out and I have no idea why
I tell this to every friend who asks me if they can start coming over and using my gym when they ask me how I have stayed motivated for years... "It's not about motivation. It's about dedication." You're never going to be 100% motivated, 100% of the time and that goes for ANYTHING in life. Your job, your hobbies, your non-fitness goals, etc... where you make the most progress are those days you feel like absolute dogshit, or have no motivation - but you _do it anyway_ Motivation only gets you through the first week, month, maybe 3 or 4 months. DEDICATION gets you to year 3, 5, 10...
Man,I train daily. I walk mornings for 1 gour and at 5pm i do weighlifting x 5 days a week. Im tired to thr point i cannot fall asleep at night. I wonder if I overdo it. Desperate to lose some fat which is impossible for me. I tried everythibg you said. However, I loke to train whether i lose fat or not.
Oh man, i feel out of topic but i will pull it out since u spoke of brushing teeth. I have been working out using the versa grips not to be limited by my forearms for awhile, works like a charm and its very cool. One of my molars actually broke because of some dumb duck bone. Now im totally limited by my teeth grind as i do heavy exercises. Im biting on something using my fronth tooth now so that i dont grind the broken tooth, because the only time it hurts is when i put jaw pressure in my workouts. That truly ends up limiting my reps at a certain point if i dont use some tissue but i might eventually hurt the other teeths. I feel a bit stupid for this question, correct me if im wrong to do the jaw thing... Is this just a bad habit to tighten the jaw or is there some science behind that ? Thanx for helping out Doc! Best teacher ever. Peace. -Rock

This must be the most important video I have ever watched in my life. This goes way beyond of just training. This is literally a reference of how to accomplish anything in life. Thank you very much Mike!
on granny shit so inspirational i ran 100 km in 2 mins and went to hit a pr of 400 kg on bench
Yes, the psychological implications of understanding this are vastly applicable to so many parts of life!
shorter video is 50+ minutes. love it
Bro what’s long for you is tiny for Doc
His diet motivation video is under 40 and the content is nearly identical.
"This is a shorter video" he says right after I checked the run time and realized I don't have time for a 50 minute video before my workout.
Listen to it WHILE you train, IQ 1000
And it's twice as long as the diet video lol.
Sounds like you need 'step 1: Inspiration' to watch the video 😆
Listen at 2x speed
You have a gift for speaking and getting a point across. Clear, controlled, concise, comedic. You also have this very friendly vibe which also makes it even more fun to listen and learn. Free of ego unlike most Dr’s. Thanks for the uploads!
Dude Mike. I can’t think you enough
Honestly you can apply this logic to almost anything
Your videos motivate me.

--- 6 Constructs of Adherence ---
1. Inspiration (the initial spark to get you to start) [lasts for a very short time] -> associate with other inspiring people or personally experience the consequence of *not* starting
2. Motivation (the inner desire to want to train) [it waxes and wanes] -> set realistic goals and recognize how you are accomplishing them
3. Intention (a commitment to execute a plan) [you still have to do the work) -> make a clear plan of what to do so that you can accomplish the goals
4. Discipline (willpower to meet your intentions) [you can't sustainably grind it out forever) -> adhere to the plan even on your low days, use strategies to pump yourself up when you need it
5. Habit (automation of the process) [something can be habitual but you may not love it -- it may feel 'mechanical'] -> the process is just something you regularly do, no big deal. less willpower required. high level of adherence here.
6. Passion ("I love this process! I go out of my way to do this.") [takes months and years] -> have fun, take breaks, be of service to others
I’ve never seen a breakdown like this!! Can be applied to ANY goal! Let’s Go!!
It's insane how you can be so informative while keeping it very easy to follow and also crack some jokes throughout, you are incredible
What a great FREE video. This is like college level structure and and excellent motivation advice. You just have to ACTUALY DO IT.
How does this video only has 24k views..
Literally the only video I have watched on YT that's over 30mins.
"..discipline is using willpower to fill in the gaps on your low motivation days to make sure you meet intention." 👏
0:13 "This is going to be a shorter video" - turns out to be 14 minutes than the last, nearly an hour... welcome to Mike-land!
Hey mike I listened to this video over half a year ago and it’s changed my life thank you so much for making it. I used it for much more than lifting, I applied it to many things in my life. I would like to shake your hand someday
Great job. What have you made significant progress in and what was it?
Congratulations man.
I consider this video essential to understand how I work. Thx Mike.

I'm going to come back to this video and the dieting one as long as UA-cam exists.
Yeah... Here I am once again.
Passion took me over recently, going 2-3h a day split over 2 windows, now I'm restricted to 1h a day and I'm quite scared of the adjustment. Dr Mike has a compelling analogy for literally any situation
one of the most inspirational videos I have ever seen, never expected that, thanks Mike im 42 and the strongest and fittest I have ever been in my life .......I still suck though! ;-)
The only RP video I knew I didn’t need, lol. Training = sanity
truth ☝
Use it for anything else that you need work on
I have no goals. I just want to be my best self. I was challenged at work to a body weight competition and failed miserably. That was my motivation. Honestly, instead of trying to find something to do, I just have to find myself in the gym and do more than last time. It's great. Loved this so much I ran it back. Great stuff from RP these days.
So then your goal is doing more than last time, which is the best short term goal to have! 😉🙏❤
The 5 people who downvoted must find all of this completely obvious and intuitive - I found this incredibly, incredibly useful. Bless ya Mike

Don't need motivation to train but the thing he said about PR's deserve a like on its own.
Dr mike, this really could be a book on motivation.
The best lecture ever, cheers
Fun fact I went to the local YMCA through the entire pandemic 😅 24 hour access
This is some grade A content. Can’t believe it doesn’t have as many views
Best video I've watched in a while!!!

Thank you Doc ! Gyms are closed again in France and it's hard to stay committed when the intent is no longer available

THANK YOU DAD
best video on this topic i've ever seen
Dr. Mike casually swimming around, fully dressed, brushing his teeth in the morning. Standard.
I needed a lot of motivation to watch this 52 min video....
This was an extremely enjoyable listen.
Great video man, really made me inspired to continue my training, gonna get me some good intensions for it now :)
I used to really have motivation to keep going while listening to music, but the most motivated I’ve been is while listening to the sopranos while I work out and I have no idea why

Literally just finished brushing my teeth then watched Dr. Mike go on about not caring what his coworkers think if he brushes his teeth or not lol
It could be really great if you post those vids on Spotify so we can listen to them while running etc... !
I'd love to learn more about this topic. It'd be great to read some of the literature Mike used to create this video.
I feel motivated to like this video :)
I truly feel bad for people that the passion, motivation and drive to lift doesnt come naturally to. I have no idea what thats like.
Came for fitness advice, left with life lessons.
Trying to get to 135x5 bench right now
Respect from pakistan
How far we’ve come
You will never regret going to the gym, even if that workout sucked, bot yiu always retreat not going !
Increase carbs to 1.5g/lb and my workouts thank you sir
where did this framework for adherence originate? Seems like it could apply to a lot of things beyond exercise.

Superman can't move the planet Jupiter: I suck, I don't wanna be Superman anymore.
I would these to be uploaded on the podcast
They would throw me out of planet fitness if I turn into a woohoo girl and go woooooo!! Lol
I have to motivate myself to take rest days.

Past test of grind is ground, right?
Does anyone know what brand of laptop Mike uses? I'm thinking about getting one...
You can have a hospital in the middle of a field, trust me, I’m a nurse in the army lmao
What if the person you want to train with has a bro bodybuilding coach that believes in bro splits
👍🏻
Honestly, for the past year so I can't get motivated to do anything but weights.
Ummm... and that was a short vid.
3 years ago.. dr. mike looked like Steven Hawking..
If a random kid from Kenya said to me "I want to be Mr. Olympia," I would tell him, "Like hell you will. Not with those muscle fiber genetics!" But I like Dr. Mike's way better; it's more considerate.
man i use this to be beter at work
I train to get them beefy Hamstrings for my skinny chicken legs
Actually

Most "workout motivation" videos on youtube only motivate you to work out one arm. This is not that.
On the last couple reps that are hard think of a hot chick gets me through it
Mike could at least have wiped off that laptop 💦 😉 😜
Motivated by puszy
Who tf pees for 5 minutes???
Change the thumbnail Doc...it sucks! EDIT: Also INSPIRATION on the thumbnail is misspelled as INSPRIATTON.
