- Priya Purushothaman was the finalé artiste on Day 2 of the FEA-curated CUSP festival held in Chennai in early 2020. For her opening recital of the evening she performed two bandishes, the first composed by her guru Pandit Dinkar Kaikini and the next by his guru Pandit SN Ratanjankar in Raag Kaunsi Kanada.
She was accompanied by Tejovrush Joshi on tabla and Vyasmurti Katti on harmonium. Tanpura support was provided by P Subramanian and Smt. Geetha.
Excellent alap and rendition. I still can’t believe I am listening to someone in this generation singing soulfully and in Shruti.
SamPoorna blessings from the guru and very deep Riyaz....if she sings like this for the next ten to fifteen years, she will see what ‘Gaana Saraswati Kishori Tai’ saw and if we are lucky, she will show us too.

The videogarphy was also awesome. It gave me the feeling of actually sitting in the haveli - kudos. The haveli itself is enviable with light decoration and all - the ambience couldnt be any better.
The audio was noiseless, which was pleasantly surprising.. As if it were recorded in a studio.
Perfect example of how uplifting a private mehfil could be.

No wonder her Gurus were very good artists and examiners at Bhatkhande music vidyapith, Mumbai center long time ago when I passed my Visharad in music. Priya singing this raag with meditative mood creates nice effect on audience. Congratulations!

Very well done, Priya 👏🏼! Really brought out the beauty of the raag. While I understand the microphone was perhaps not pointed towards the audience, I would hope their applause wasn't really as muted as it appears in the recording. Excellent performance.

In the alap, Priya uses predominatly the words "(r)zhen-ai" (I don't know how better to spell it). I have heard her use these same words in other performances in various raags. I would be very grateful if someone could tell me the meaning of these words, if they have a meaning, or are they just meaningless syllables?

What Priya is presenting is the Nom Tom Aalaap - accepted as a phase of melodic musical elaboration of a raga presented without tala by employing syllables such as nom, torn, dir, tana as a prop for unfolding the salience of the raga. Also employed by players of musical instruments such as veena, which follow vocal music in this respect. This form of presentation is chiefly associated with the singers/players of the dhrupad genre.
The Vocal style of North Indian music which is known as Khayal (meaning thought) has evolved from the earlier Dhrupad style which consists of building the mood characteristics of the Raga in Aalap only using appropriate permutations and combinations of the notes of the Raga without any word. That establishes the fact that the emotional state, the mood is not due to meaning of the words but of sequence of notes and tempo and rhythm in recital. But pure phonetic sounds of vowels are not suitable to modulate volume and also show the details of rhythm and the forceful use of some syllables using consonents must have been the reason to include such meaningless words in the Dhrupad style, because no Pakhawaj or Tabla is used for providing the rhythm. The singer herself shows it by the modulations in her voice.
Different Khayal styles have retained Aalap in the Dhrupad style as is found here. The Tabla accompanying starts after the singer has fully presented the musical form of the Raga. The song sung after that with Tabla is with meaningful words.
