Alors, what did you learn about French pronunciation that you will take away? What is the first thing that comes to mind after watching? Thanks so much to Jean-Baptiste from Expatlang for this really fun and different type of video. I hope it gave you a refreshing perspective on what's important when speaking a foreign language. That was so much fuuuuuun ! Thank you Alex :o). And I'd be curious to know what you all out there think about what correct French pronunciation is. Amazing Job Alex !🙏
Wow, you've done such a great job with this video Alex. It looks amazing. And thank you so much for having me over on your channel. That was such a great collaboration. I'm still amazed by your pronunciation and your professionalism regarding French teaching. I wish I weren't a native French speaker to have lessons with you ! 💪 😀

I admire your courage , and you are vindicated really fantastic I try to do what you do I know communication is king but I believe pronunciation is proper
A must-view video for all Anglophone students of French, presented by two -count 'em- great French teachers! This is an instructive, entertaining -and, above all, useful- clinic in the matter of French pronunciation for English speakers, not only covering the mechanics of pronunciation but also taking a practical, real-world approach to the whys and wherefores of the matter. Worth viewing [and listening] more than once. Bravo et Merci les deux!
Alex. You are so brave. I know your pronunciation is great. Very interesting to see the English influence in your convo. This happens to me more than I admit to while reading cognates. I absolutely love J-B’s info on prosody, rhythm, etc. It’s hard to get info on this. More of this is you can!! Often the info is contradictory. Great topic, examples. Merci. Très utile
I really appreciated his overview of how the French language slides from one word to another without stopping. I also hadn’t heard that French words do not contain consistently stressed syllables in every word. This was very useful, and congratulations on getting an amazing pronunciation assessment!!
What a lovely and useful video. Amazing teacher, and good on you to be able to show us this. You just jumped up in my eyes multifold! BTW Pimsleur method is amazing for obtaining metropolitan French accent.
To see you, a fantastic French speaker, receive corrections is inspiring, Alex. I wish I had learned pronunciation from JB back in school. Your collaborations are always top notch (I can’t even imagine how much work goes into making them).
Alex, I think you speak French in a brilliant manner but I think your English accent is so lovely. I watch your videos to listen to your English, rather than your French. It's awesome!
Finally a great a precise video about pronunciation. This is excellent. - One thing however : as a native, not sure why he says E sound at the end of "maîtrise" should be pronounced. - Tu as l'air de prononcer "con" - naissance, hors c'est "co" - naissance.
Bonjour Experiment.
I love seeing you two together! I watched your video on Jean-Baptiste’s channel yesterday and had a good chuckle during your sketches! This video was very interesting, as I studied linguistics and phonetics back in the day. Great tips, explained so clearly by Jean-Baptiste. Thanks to you both - you guys are the best! 😊
Une vidéo pour le moins "courageuse", mais aussi originale et qui fait découvrir ces très légers défauts que l'on ne perçoit pas chez toi Alex lorsque l'on t'écoute.
And it’s cute that J-B’s English pronunciation is « progressing » and not perfect. BT W I know about the non puffed French letter P but had no clue about the T. Merci encore
I think that some of the supposedly improper pronunciations that JB pointed at (mande instead of monde for instance) are also a result of Alex living in the south of France and not in the Paris area... About the puffed "t", something that JB did not mention is that a lot of French-speaking people in other parts of the world DO use very very very much-puffed T's (in Quebec for example)
@@FrenchinPlainSight Hi Alex the point you make about not having to sound perfect, like a native speaker. J-B is my (excellent) prof and he makes the point that communication is the key (I am leaning for pleasure and not for work/exams). Yes the pronunciation , grammar etc are important but to be understood and have great conversations are what it’s about for me. Well done and hopefully there will be more like this x
I think you should do it also the other way around and assess the French coach's English! To me (a non English speaker) it sounds so spot on!!! But what do I know!
Hehe. yea it was like another person came out when he spoke English to me for the first time. 2 languages, 2 identities. Or like 5 or 6 in his case :p. It's the flag of the ancient region Occitanie, to which Montpelllier belonged. It is now part of the "new" Occitanie which was created just 5 or so year ago for adminstrative/political reasons and the new region has a flag that is inspired from the old one.
@@FrenchinPlainSight Thanks so much for answering, especially as I couldn't figure it out by googling. Very interesting. And thank you for making us feel more comfortable that we don't need to be perfect in pronunciation.
I'm not sure it was taken into account that you're in Occitanie. Notably, I found his "on" a bit too open and yours perfect. I guess he's not from the South from his inventory of only 3 nasal sounds. He didn't mention the sound found at the end of "médecin".
Hi Louis and thanks a lot for your message. Actually, we've mentioned a few of the points you've made in your message. At 8min00, we reminded that there are actually up to 6 different nasal sounds in the various regions of France (and there are actually way more than 6 nasal sounds in the whole French-speaking world). 3 nasal sounds is generally what is taught in the classes of French as a foreign language (it would be too complex for learners to go deeper into such subtle pronunciation details). I really hope you didn't get the impression that we created this video saying that Alex's pronunciation is "correct" or "incorrect". If you did, please rest assured that it wasn't our intention at all. We actually clearly stressed the impossibility to define a "correct" French pronunciation (many different accents and pronunciation habits around France and the world). We simply tried to focus on what made a native speaker know that Alex is English. 😀
Thank you for this video. One thing I noticed, a common misunderstanding of what "nasal" means: we call sounds nasal that are NOT pronounced through the nose. You have to stop the airflow through the nose to achieve this sound.
Avis d'un natif : c'est parfait. Si personne ne vous reprends c'est que ce n'est pas nécessaire, tout simplement. Après on entend bien que vous êtes anglais. Mais c'est normal et on s'en fout.
