  • Phoenix, Arizona, USA - 1993 United States Figure Skating Championships, Ladies' Free Skate - Lisa Ervin would land only 3 triples jumps, the 2 easiest type of jumps. Again, after the scores for the last skater of the night were posted, the ordinals for the top ladies would flip flop and she would end up winning the Silver Medal here.

How did this program with only 3 clean triples win the silver medal? Insane. 2 triple toes, 1 triple salchow.

Nobody skated terribly well this particular year. Tonya Harding only landed 2 clean triples (Salchow and Flip) and a step-out on a 3 Loop. She was left off the World Team. Tonia Kwiatkowski, who landed in 3rd and advanced along with Ervin to Worlds, I think, managed a 3 Flip and a 3 Toe.
I think it was a huge mistake to send Lisa Ervin to Worlds. Even on her best day, even with the "skate of her life", she was no match for anyone internationally and had no chance for a medal. She didn't possess the ability to land the jumps the judges would expect her to internationally and while she had a pretty layback, her presentation was amateurish. But the US opted to send her as their "2nd best entry". Weird and dangerous for a year before an Olympics. She just did the easiest program with the least mistakes at Nationals -- and that translated into a very mediocre ranking at Worlds. The US banked on Nancy Kerrigan to prop the team up heading into the Olympics and it backfired miserably. NOBODY wound up on the podium from the US that year.

The judges that year made a very huge error by going on everything that happened that night on ice and not considering 1. The skater's results that whole season, 2. The level of the skater's content for the world stage, 3. How they could make a difference for the team internationally if there were results issues with their other team members. But then again, this was how many country's nationals approached it until many years later - how they didn't combine seasonal results factors but only their performance at their national championships. At U.S. Nationals, the federation made a huge error by keeping Harding off the 93 World team, although given the bias against her her whole career, it wasn't surprising. But she would have qualified for sure and make top 10.

That was a horrible period for the American Ladies figure skating team after Kristi retired and Tonya had issues. They swept the World podium in 1991 with Nancy. Nancy had problems at 1993 Worlds if we remember correctly falling from 1st after the SP to 5th overall. We were weak until Michelle Kwan, Tara Lipinski, Sasha Cohen, Nicole Bobek, and Sarah Hughes.

@@alexsdb9712 To be fair, Tonya showed no indication she would have fared any better than the other American ladies at Worlds. Her training was erratic and she was distracted. She would have done just as badly as the other women, or worse, if she replicated her Nationals skate at Worlds.

@@hieuscottle2494 It seems that way from a distance. But we will never truly know as the chance and scenario wasn't put forward.

Lisa was doing triple flip/ triple toe combinations in practice. Too bad she never put them in.

usask8rboy I am not too surprised to hear that, although her jumps were a bit stronger in her junior days. She was doing 3Fs much more consistently around, I’d say, 1991, but 3T and 3S were pretty much all the tripes she could consistently perform by 1993.

Hard to believe. Triple/triple combos of any kind were pretty rare in that time. Most were triple toe/triple toe. It was a big deal that Lipinski did 3loop/3loop a few years after this, so I heavily doubt that she was performing that combo in practice.

My goodness. I guess all the ladies had the same designers for their skating dresses. And apparently it hadn’t crossed their minds to put their hair up!

Having dresses made special for the program and theme wasn't popular until after 94. Everyone made a big deal out of Kerrigan's long program dress, and I think other skaters really wanted to mimic that. The dresses became so much more intricate and beautiful in the later 90's.
